Loved 1992’s Single White Female? Then you’ll love 2010’s Leighton Meester-Minka Kelly thriller, The Roommate. Like Female, Roommate focuses on obsession: The film follows a college freshman (Meester) who develops an unhealthy fascination with her roommate (Kelly). For her role, Meester says she went method, researching mental illness with the help of psychologists and films like 1974’s A Woman Under the Influence. The actress tried to keep her distance from cast members — and a litter of kittens being used for the film — in order to retain her character’s level of emotional aloofness. “You would think that that idea of playing somebody who’s out of control or lost touch with reality is somehow fun, but it was to a point of discomfort,” the actress says. “[My character] is completely delusional and it’s definitely a cause of a chemical imbalance, so that wasn’t the easiest and most enjoyable thing. Even in her most normal moments, she’s genuinely a disturbed person. She had very abnormal wheels turning at all times.”

But will friends let Meester play psychiatrist, now that she’s garnered knowledge about mental health? Not quite, says Meester. “I don’t think they’ll want my advice after they see this movie.”

June 1, 2009 - On the set of THE ROOMMATE.

[...] here comes the director of The Roommate Christian E. Christensen, a cute, blonde Danish dude who is making the film his U.S. directing debut after helming several movies in Denmark, one nominated for an Oscar! Again, we can't reveal his very interesting take on the scary storyline but we did want to know why he cast Leighton and Minka as the two roomies.

Christian: We wanted Sara to be an all-American, likeable character and I knew Minka from 'Friday Night Lights' and I think she was wonderful in that show. She's really sweet and she's a great contrast to what Leighton is bringing to the movie. We know Leighton from 'Gossip Girl' where she is kind of the bad girl, most of the time anyway. We wanted to bring that in. We wanted to bring some of those qualities. No doubt people are going to see something quite different from her. Leighton's whole approach to the role is amazing.

"Twilight" villain Cam Gigandet has been cast opposite Leighton Meester in Screen Gems' "The Roommate."

Psychological thriller centers on a deranged college freshman who becomes obsessed with her new roommate. Gigandet will play the boyfriend of Meester's character.

Christian E. Christiansen is helming from a Sonny Mallhi screenplay. Roy Lee and Doug Davison will produce "Roommate" through their Vertigo Entertainment banner.

Screen Gems is eyeing a May start date.

Gigandet's credits include "The Unborn" and "Never Back Down."

This weekend’s Times magazine features a fashion layout with Leighton Meester, the former child model turned actress who is best known for playing the spoiled Upper East Side princess Blair Waldorf on “Gossip Girl.” I caught up for breakfast with the 23-year-old Meester, who showed up wearing a mannish Ruth Reichl-meets-Annie Hall disguise, including a hat and respectable spectacles.
    Question

I had lunch with Jason Wu recently, who told me you were his date to an event. This is how rumors start.

He’s such a sweetheart. We actually went to Anna Wintour’s house for dinner. It was very cool and quite the fashion baptism by fire.
