From Itunes if you search for Generation Kill you should be able to subscribe. There is a 14 min making of and then 2 min or so on each character. At this point a total of 9 PodCasts are on the site.

I checked HBO's web site and they seem to have the same material that you can stream. (http://www.hbo.com/generationkill/)

I received the July 21-Aug 3 issue of TV Guide today. There's an article about five of the men inside one of the lead Humvees in Generation Kill. Lee, of course, is one of those men, and there is also a wonderful pic of the guys. They all have grim, serious faces, except for Lee, who has a slight smile. Nice pic!

Now this is what we call reality TV! A seven-hour adaptation of the best-selling tome by Rolling Stone reporter Evan Wright, HBO's Generation Kill follows the Marines 'elite 1st Reconnaissance Battalion as it spearheads the 2003 invasion of Iraq. "These guys are supermen," says executive producer Ed Burns (the Wire). Rather than a straightforward rat-a-tat battlefield story, he says, " We saw it as a travelogue where you would get to know these guys and what they were going through in the cauldron of war." Their journey is heartbreaking and scary, but also uproarious, as we learn during the frequent scenes with these men inside one of Bravo Company's lead Humvees.

The article then says a little about the five men, and Lee is labeled as #4:

As scribe Wright's alter ego, Oz vet Tergesen, 42, is bemused and appalled by the war's savagery and dark comedy, "It's an incredible journey that opens his eyes to a lot of horrors of the world," Tergesen says. "At the same time," he admits, "We laughed our asses off." Especially during the many sing-alongs in the Humvee, which reminded Tergesen of his part in the "Bohemian Rhapsody" scene in "Wayne's World": " I'd be like, 'This is weird. I'm in the backseat again!'"

TV's New Grunt Work
'The Wire' was brutal. Now David Simon tries Iraq.

Viewers who are faithful to HBO's enormously intricate cop drama "The Wire" - or even just you dabblers - should know what to expect from "Generation Kill," the new Iraq War mini-series from "The Wire" creator David Simon. That is, a learning curve as steep as a black-diamond ski course and a teeming population of Marine grunts who, like a teeming population of Baltimore cops before them, speak tactical jargon like bards. Simon's programs can feel like homework, but they tend to unfold in surprising ways that reward the massive investment required. "Kill" is no exception.

That said, it's a shame that Simon hasn't learned to sprinkle a little sugar on his harsh critiques. The servicemen of "Kill" are not a pleasant bunch to be around. There are hard-core Marines who didn't join for tuition money but because they wanted a piece of the action. They're second-string athletes itching to get in there and lay waste, and they bide their time lobbing racial slurs at one another and lusting over the grade-school girls who mail them letters of encouragement. The most fascinating of the bunch is Cpl. Ray Person (James Ransone, a former "Wire" denizen), a fount of filthy wisdom who posits that the Iraqis' unsatisfying sex lives are the catalyst for the war.

It's a tough sell to the American audience that has already proven its uninterest in depictions of the Iraq War, from underperforming documentaries like "No End in Sight" and "Taxi to the Dark Side" to Steven Bochco's 2005 dramatic series "Over There," which couldn't even muster a million viewers for its finale. At this point, everyone has a position on the war - you think it's a disaster or you don't - and there's more than enough daily news flotsam to fill the gaps. Plunging into a seven-hour series on the topic just seems like, well, overkill.

But "Kill" has an element that previous attempts have lacked: a proxy for the audience. Lee Tergesen (from HBO's "Oz") plays Evan Ross [sic], the real-life Rolling Stone contributor who's embedded with the battalion and wrote the acclaimed book on which the series is based. The Ross character mirrors all the reactions a viewer is likely to have: he's as baffled, revolted and depressed by what he sees as we are. For him, looking away isn't as easy as flicking at the remote. As engrossing as "Kill" can be, it's grim enough that most viewers won't be able to resist that impulse.

Okay, the author obviously got EVAN WRIGHT's name wrong. And I think he could have been a little more generous by saying that because LEE looks baffled, revolted & depressed, he's doing a damn find job! Talk about a back-handed compliment. And yeah, if Lee hadn't been in it, I wouldn't have watched it either - well, no HBO to start, but also because I already read the book. And yeah, it's grim, but hell... it's war. I hope GK ends up getting the viewership that both the show and the topic deserve.

I uploaded a video clip of Lee's first two scenes in the first episode of "Generation Kill." My software is acting wonky -- or maybe the recording was wonky. Either way, this is as far as I got tonight, and the result isn't all that great.

Sigh... Nevertheless, for the HBO-less it's a glimpse of Lee in action!

The first episode of Generation Kill premiered tonight, and it's an incredibly well-made production. It's an attention-getter in so many ways, and I'm glad Lee's a part of it.

Here's a report from the Cleveland Plain Dealer that featured Evan Wright, Cleveland native and the man who wrote "Generation Kill." He is also the "character" that Lee portrays. Here are the Lee-ish highlights from the article, including a cool pic:

Intriguingly, the actor Wright gave the least guidance was Tergesen.

"I worked closely with all of the actors, because I knew the real guys," Wright said. "But with Lee, I didn't want to upset the balance. I didn't want him to freeze up. . . . We talked. We had dinner in Africa, and he kind of interviewed me."

It was while peppering Wright with questions that Tergesen figured out how to play the writer from Cleveland.

"The key was that I had quit drinking several years earlier," Wright said. "I was a very heavy drinker previously. And there's something about combat that replicates the sort of emotional chaos of being a heavy drinker. And even though you quit drinking, you kind of miss the chaos in a sick way. So he asked me how did I feel over in Iraq, and I told him that. . . . For a person like me, who's kind of a control freak, there's something almost nice about the fact that you know you have no control. It's sort of a relief."

Lee is in L.A. at the Television Critics Association semiannual meeting -- which happens to be where my friend Terry, the TV critic for the Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel, is. Terry interviewed him today. He was impressed that Lee remembered him from his set visit to Oz back in 2000 (which I attended with Terry). Terry said Lee was one of the best interviews he's done at TCA and commented on how very friendly Lee was. I told him, "I know!" heheh :>

"Generation Kill"

HBO sent me screeners of the first 5 episodes of "Generation Kill" (there are a total of seven eps in the miniseries) and the book "Generation Kill" that the miniseries is based on. The book's cover is a picture of the cast from the miniseries, and front and center on it is Lee. :)

Although the subject matter is not my cuppa tea, the miniseries is excellently made. Of course, there's not enough Lee in it, for my taste. It's hard to say how much he's in (especially since I haven't watched all 5 of the eps HBO sent me). We don't see him all that much, and when we do, he's either part of the background or we just get reaction shots from him (mostly open-mouthed shock). There is one humorous bit he does in the second (or was it the first?) episode. But I won't spoil that, for those of you who are going to watch "Kill." Still, he's there. At least there's a lot more of him in "Kill" than there was in "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."

For those of you who like this genre, you should like "Kill." It has enough action and is done realistically. For those of you who don't like war films, record "Kill" and just fast-forward to the parts with Lee in it.
