 Hi everyone...
This community seems a bit sleepy, so I thought I'd introduce myself and breathe a bit of life into it!

Well... my name's Sadie and I love Lee Evans? That's a good start I suppose! I've not seen him live but I've watched most of his DVDs I think.

I don't really know what else to say! If anyone actually reads this, hello! I'm new to Livejournal so I'd be happy for friends to add :)

Following my mention of Lee performing in "The Dumb Waiter", here are some photos from the Trafalgar Studios I thought you might like to take a look at:

Lee is superb in every way - go see it! [15 Mar 2007|09:59am]

Why nobody has mentioned this is beyond me. Lee is currently performing in "The Dumb Waiter" at the Trafalgar Studios on Whitehall Street in London and he is absolutely amazing. I went to see it yesterday and was totally blown away. It's also possibly one of the most intimate venues you'll ever get to see Lee in. Go get your tickets now though because it ends on the 24th!

"Evans is certainly making a name for himself as a stage actor and this performance will go further towards cementing his reputation. Beginning in silence, with Evans rising from bed and proceeding to put on, take off, then put on his shoes again, the production threatens to reveal itself as nothing more than a showcase for the comedian’s clowning abilities. Thankfully, it opens out as an example of intuitive directing, which places accent on the comedy and provides Evans with the stage to deliver a terrific turn, closer to the nuances of character Chaplin was capable of portraying than the antics of Norman Wisdom. What is also impressive is the freshness Evans lends to certain lines, through both his mannerisms and intonations. Sonia Friedman must be smiling to herself for suggesting him for the part." (David Simmons for The Stage)

"Groundbreaking - outstanding performances" (The Daily Telegraph)

"This is the real McCoy... a fine revival" (The Guardian)

"Tarantino meets Tony Hancock in a comedy of menace played for truth" (The Times)

"As fine a production of Pinter's knuckle crunching tense drama as you're ever likely to see" (The Daily Mail)

"Alarmingly funny" (The Sunday Times)

Excelling with XL! [07 Dec 2005|10:55am]

[ mood | contemplative ]

Taken from Chortle:

"Lee Evans’s new DVD has become the second fastest-selling stand-up title ever. The recording of his current XL tour has sold 130,000 copies in the first week of release. But that’s still 30,000 short of Peter Kay’s record-breaking 160,000 copies for Live At The Albert Halls last year. However, Evans’s title this week lies at No 5 in the official chart of all DVD sales - one place ahead of Kay’s Live At Manchester Arena. Evans’s DVD was taped at Cardiff International Arena, as part of the tour that has played to more than 250,000 people this year. The tour also claimed the official Guinness World record for the largest ever stand-up audience – 10,108 at Manchester’s MEN Arena. However, that record is disputed by Eddie Izzard, who sold more than 13,500 tickets to his Sexie tour at the MEN Arena in 2003, but failed to get the audience verified by Guinness officials."

What I want to know is that if Lee sold out the arena and got 10, 108 bums on seats, how could Izzard have sold out the arena and got over 13,000 bums on seats. Isn't a sell out full capacity? Where do they get all the extra seats from? Great news on the DVD though!

A perfect example to many... [05 Dec 2005|02:14pm]

[ mood | enthralled ]

Taken from Chortle:

"Lee Evans has revealed that his wife Heather is the only woman he has ever slept with. The couple met 25 years ago, when Evans was 16, and he said: "Even then I knew she was the one, no question." He first saw her as she passed on a bus. "She was crying," he said. "I found out later it was because her mum was dying of cancer. About a week later I saw her at a concert. Three years later, we married. I know it's corny but I can't imagine how I would survive without Heather. In fact, I know I couldn't."

In his interview with the Sunday Mirror, Evans, 41, also repeated his insecurities about his comedy. "It's weird standing up there, because I don't think I'm funny at all - just an idiot," he said. "I am surprised so many people turn up, especially when there's so much more to do. After all it's just comedy - it's not that important. I think I keep working so much because I'm not a confident person The thing is, I don't want to let anyone down - not just the audience, but also my friends who have had faith in me over the years." "

How sweet is that?! A nice bloke and all round gentleman, could Lee be any more perfect? Click here for the full Sunday Mirror article.

Taken from The Times:

"The noise of laughter is an incredible thing" says Lee Evans. "If you heard the same volume of crying, think how terrible it would be. But the sound of ten thousand people laughing in unison is an incredible noise."

Lee in the record books! [21 Nov 2005|09:20am]

richdudley
[ mood | impressed ]

Taken from today's Metro newspaper:

King of comedy: Lee Evans

Record-breaking Laughs

"Slapstick star Lee Evans has set a newrecord - by performing to the largest ever comedy audience. The Perrier award winner appeared before a crowd of 10,108 people beating the previous record by more than 1,000. Evans, 41, said: "I can't believe it. When I started out 20 years ago I never imagined I would be selling out more nights at Wembley than Coldplay - just for talking rubbish. Having said that, I'm knackered." The record breaking performance at the Manchester Evening News Arena, part of a 32 date nationwide tour, secured Evans a place in the Guinness World Record book. Eddie Izzard held the previous record - he played to a crowd of 8,700 in 1997."

Another interview with Lee... [17 Oct 2005|11:12am]

richdudley
[ mood | amused ]

Taken from the Cambridge Evening News website:

"My wife used to think I was cute...now she thinks I'm an idiot!"

Lee Evans is back with a bang. After three long years away from stand-up, he is returning to live comedy with a vengeance this autumn. And he's clearly relishing the prospect. "The rush you get from live comedy never wanes," beams Evans.

"Because it's a shared experience, the buzz is immediate. Sometimes I'll go on stage and say stuff that I wrote down in a mad panic in the car on the way to the venue. And when the audience gets it, you think, 'blimey, you and all!' "What I love is that it's a communal thing. We all come together in a room, point out of the window at things and laugh at them. It's as simple as that."

Lee Live [04 Oct 2005|09:51pm]

[ music | Defying Gravity - Wicked OBC ]

Here we go, [info]richdudley!

On Friday night I went off to the NIA in Birmingham to see Lee - my first time seeing his stand up routine.

And, to summarise, I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. There's nothing worse than seeing a comedian flounder and die on stage, but it was great to see Lee supported and the audience reacting well to his material.

I had a good seat at the side of the stage, where I was able to appreciate his physical comedy, and I was surrounded by people who were literally crying with laughter, which all added to the atmosphere. Both myself and my friend were delighted with his 'Bohemian Rhapsody' near the end of the night, and I was amazed at how long the evening was. I had to walk back into town to get a taxi (to avoid all the Broad St crowd - eugh) and got home around midnight - although Lee didn't start his gig on time, he finished after 11pm, so we certainly got our money's worth.

It was a terrible shame that I couldn't hear his song at the end of the show, I was surprised at how many people were leaving during the number, but I've often been a victim of 'last bus home' syndrome myself; perhaps that explained it. I stayed til the very end.

And I can't wait to see him again one day! DVD of the tour? BRING IT ON!

Birmingham NIA, Friday 30th September 2005 [01 Oct 2005|07:02pm]

[ mood | pleased ]

Well, I went to see Lee perform his first show on the tour and I wasn't disappointed. Those of you who are new to Lee will lap this new show up. It really is a spectacle. I did think it lacked that special something, especially compared to particular shows of old (circa 1995-1998) but it's still a great show, packed with some good observational comedy, some of which really is quite clever. :)

What I just didn't get however was the Birmingham audience. A bloke sitting next to Kel was rocking and fidgeting in his chair, so much so that the entire row of seats rattled throughout the night. There were a few gags that the Birmingham crowd didn't get ("I was quite good at boxing. I would come third") which just beggared belief. People ran towards the front of the arena for a good ten minutes just to take photos of Lee which distracted him and led to security staff having to head towards the stage to lead such people away. And then there were all the early leavers, the entire row sitting in front of us deciding to leave halfway through the song at the end of the show because it was "boring". To say that the idiots of Birmingham all flock to the same big concerts is one hell of an understatement.

So the night was pretty much a superb peformance from Lee but a mediocre reception from the crowd. Either that or all the idiots were sitting in the same part of the arena as us!

For those of you who were at the show, Lee thanked the Glee Club at the end of the night and one person screamed from the right hand side of the venue which prompted him to look towards that area. That would be me then! :P

I also spent a fortune on merchandise. A programme, t-shirt, beanie hat, photo prints, mug and calendar. Something tells me I love the guy too much! Surely that's allowed though, eh? They had loads more too so if you're heading to another show, take plenty of cash with you!

Enjoy the rest of the tour! :)

Looking up to the Evans... [30 Sep 2005|12:14pm]

richdudley
It's finally here.

Lee Evans' mighty return to the stand-up scene and it starts tonight at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena!

Those of you who aren't going to the gig can still catch Lee as he is on "Friday Night With Jonathan Ross" tonight on BBC One at 10:35pm. Clever eh?!

Question - does anyone know if Lee has got a support act for this tour? I'm curious! :P
