Hello, I just joined this comm in order to find some alternatives to lj.

I've heard rumors the site may be closing and things seem to have dwindled here, particularly since the infamous strikeout.

I'm just hoping lj doesn't go the way of greatestjournal, as I had an account there, which is now lost to the annals of time. :(

I'll keep my journal here as long as the site is up, but I'd like to find another place to back everything up on in case the ship goes down here. All the methods I've read for backing up seem rather complicated. It's upsetting because all the journals I read and posts I've saved in memories will be gone, unless there's a way to save those too?

Thanks for any info.

Hey folks, I'm considering leaving LJ and am currently exploring various options and journal sites. Could anyone give me the background info on why GreatestJournal is not accepting new accounts? Is it worth waiting for them to try it out or should I just search elsewhere? Thanks :)

[If this is inappropriate, please let me know!]

Inksome* is open for business! Need more information? Check out [info]tsfkas, specifically this entry for more.

For the time being, to stem the overflow of new users, the site is invite-only, though you can buy a paid journal [which is preferable to help keep the site going!!]. But even though 1 month paid is only $5, sometimes it's too much. So if you need an invite, post in [info]inksome_invites or ask a friend, but please do consider buying a paid journal or donating to keep the site going. Free journals get 100** icons, access to polls, S2 layouts/styles, and best of all NO ADS. Check out Inksome today!

*For those of you didn't know, Inksome is the site formerly known as Scribblit, a site that was put into works during the so-called "LJ fandom persecution" last year.

**As of June 18, fifty more icons were given to all users. Free accounts now get 150, paid get 300, and Early Contributors have 350.

I just wanted to recommend LostJournal if someone's still wondering where to go from here. I found out about it recently. They use invitation codes but to get started you can go to invite_codes-community to request one.

Also, Steve made a promise that might interest you.

Yeah, I guess that's all I had to say. Just wanted to offer an alternative for users like me who are under 18 and that way can't get to Journalfen.

PS. And no, the abbreviation is not LJ, it's LoJo. :)

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a way to make an LJ Smooth Sailing layout compatible with IJ, somehow? (I'm working on moving over there and am having trouble setting up the layout I want.)

Thanks,

Aidan

ETA: Okay, we're back up and running good.

We're experiencing some problems over on JournalFen today, but we're working to get them resolved. The upgrades have gone through, so once this little hiccup is out of the way things should be fully rocking over there.

If this post is inappropriate, I have no problems with deleting it or it being deleted by someone else.

[info]soleta_nf and I created [info]ljconfl_archive for the purpose of gathering in one place all those links and pieces of information we’ve seen floating around out there. We want to have an archive to act as a single, cohesive and comprehensive resource where users can have this information at their fingertips. Personally, I’ve been running an ongoing series of posts covering the current issue, but I wasted time searching for links to reference what I was talking about. [info]ljconfl_archive will hopefully remedy that problem, not just for me but for everyone needing information for coverage purposes or for essays. I think this could be an important resource for people wanting help in making the decision to leave LJ.

We have done our best to make certain the Archive will remain objective information, free from bias. While the information linked in the Archive may show bias itself, anyone posting to the Archive must refrain from using any biased/subjective language.

We want information on Strikethrough and Boldthrough, of course, but also on past controversies that have occurred in the LiveJournal community, such as the controversy concerning default user pics depicting breastfeeding.

By posting this information, we are inviting everyone with links to information to come join and help us build the Archive into the comprehensive resource everyone needs. Already, we have a timeline of events, a listing of communities dedicated in one way or another to the issues at hand, and other information. One person can only gather so much, however. We need to come together as the LiveJournal community to offer our knowledge and in it, seek the larger truth.

Unfilled requests currently start on page 1 of the new entry.

And the here is request account entry link in case you don't have it yet.

Edit: Fiercy is asking that you give Requested name, Alt name, Email, and Age in your request comment(s).

Thank you for all your help!

I've seen different questions being asked so I put together a FAQs to help. If you have any to add, comment with them and I'll update the entry.

JournalFen & Leavin Eljay FAQs

Q: How do I know if a username I want has been taken?
A: An easy way to check is, to copy and paste http://www.journalfen.net/users/USERNAME/ into your address bar, changing USERNAME to the one you want. If you receive this message Unknown User There is no user USERNAME at JournalFen. then it isn't currently taken.

Q: After my request has been filled, where is my password?
A: Once your account has been created, you will received two emails. One with your username, temporary password, and journal address. And the second with a verification link for your email address. Be sure to verify your email address! Some links won't work on JF if your email isn't verified.

Q: What about communities on JournalFen?
A: Members can open communities on JF, here. And once you've created a community, advertise it at Community Promo.

Q: My request hasn't been filled yet!
A: Depending on how many L_E helpers are on and their personal quota, it can take awhile to fill all requests. Please be patient with us, we try to get to everyone quickly.

Q: I got my journal on JF but I'm lost as to what to do next!
A: Join Welcome2JF, a community for getting started on JF. Including friending memes (currently only the HP meme is up) and a newbie guide for popular communities and useful links. Also ShyWank has a general (non-fandom specific) friending meme going on here.

Q: I don't want to join Fandom Wank!
A: It isn't required as a JournalFen member to join Fandom Wank.

Q: I do want to join Fandom Wank!
A: Here is the join community link for Fandom Wank, and be sure to check out FW's affiliates too.

Q: I want to help out with JF and L_E, how can I do that?
A: Get a paid account, you help JF with money that goes to hosting and server costs. And you can help L_E by filling requests.

Q: How do I fill requests and is there a limit?
A: Go to the Request a JournalFen Account entry and find the unscreened requests, next visit the Free Journal Creation Request entry and paste the Requested & Alt Journal Names, Email, and Age into a comment, the JF admins prefer if you put multiple requests in one comment to save space and time. Then let the requestee(s) know you filled their request. As of right now there is not a limit on how many you can fill, just use common sense. Someone will post to the community if this changes.

We've had such a great response in the request post -- we're already on page 11!

Right now, we are screening filled requests in an effort to make it easier to find unfilled requests. However, because there's so many requests and fills being made, [info]zelda suggested that we start deleting filled requests. This would hopefully make it even easier to fill requests.

What do you all think? Is the screening sufficient, or should we delete as they are filled?

(Please note that the directions in these links are intended for Windows users.)

I'm guessing if you're reading this comm, then you're interested in moving off LJ to another journaling site. If you are moving to another LJ-based site (JF, GJ, IJ, etc.) then you might find the following posts useful.

Backing up your LJ: a guide for Windows users: gives instructions on how to copy over your LJ entries to your new journal.

Semagic and posting to multiple journals: gives instructions on how to make Semagic post to multiple journals at once.

If you have any links to other useful tutorials/posts, please feel free to link to them in the comments!

I hope Giina and Angie don't think I'm overstepping my bounds here, I just noticed that page 4 on this entry has about 10 requests that have been missed.

Also for reference, how many journal requests (on JF) can we put in per day?

--Sapph

Edit: Also a stray request here and here

Edit #2: The requests queue is up-to-date. =)

So I think everyone on the last page was claimed.

New protocol:

If you don't mind making accounts, "claim" posts (reply with requested or some such thing) so we can keep track of who has been taken care of already :)

if you want an account, reply here or there with: TWO journal names (in case choice #1 is unavailable) and an email. Once requested JF admin sends the account to YOU.

expert tips for JF:

If its slow or you get the sorry page, ctrl + F5 will usually bring it up.

A lot of the pages are there - but they don't have links. These include things like customize journal, manage communities etc. Use the LJ sitemap to find what you need replace "livejournal.com" with "journalfen.net" in the address, and that usually works.
