This community is for all those who have an interest in the Yiddish language. You may speak none at all. You may speak a bisel. You may speak natively. If you wish to learn and maybe one day become fluent, or simply pick up a few words here and there, then this community is for you. Or maybe you also want to teach! We wouldn't be opposed. =)

Traditionally, Yiddish is the spoken language of a great many Jews of Europe. In modern times, its use has diminished on account of several factors which are topics for other forums. It remains, however, very much alive. There are many communities of Yiddish speakers, and you're bound to find at least one or two speakers frequenting your local JCC.
The vocabulary of Yiddish is composed of a large number of words (60 to 70% maybe?) from medieval High German and other dialects throughout the ages. The remainder is comprised of words of Hebrew, Slavic, Latin, and other origins (in addition to native Yiddish words which I'm sure there are a few of).
Yiddish is written using Hebrew characters. If you don't care to learn the characters, no problem. Most times, the posters will (and should) provide transliterations in English (Roman) characters as well. I would encourage learning the characters for those of you looking to speak the language as it will provide you with a greater number of study resources.
Look here for a guide to Yiddish transliteration.
Nu, take part, schmooze a bit, and enjoy.
This community has no direct affiliation with or leaning towards a particular branch of Judaism. The ideas expressed within are those of its members who come from various walks of life.
