FANART - 'Enchanted Atlantis' for [info]paintedspires challenge
Title: Enchanted Atlantis
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Artist: [info]le_mot_mo
Rating: G
Prompt: John and Rodney in Enchanted by Disney.
Medium: digital drawing + graphic
Character(s) and/or Pairing(s): John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Notes: I have spent hours and hours working on this piece. Gazillions of Photoshop layers were used and abused. In the end I had a movie-poster for 'Enchanted' John/Rodney style-- completely AU. Enjoy! :o)
Preview:

I must have been completely batshit insane when I claimed this prompt for the [info]paintespires challenge. I had this idea of using my new Wacom tablet to create a movie-poster, McKay/Sheppard style, for the movie 'Enchanted' for a while now, but when I saw the prompt I decided that it was fate and went for it. :o) I wanted to blend reality and animation together, which meant that I had to create animated John, Atlantis, Stargate and background. The right side is completely animated while the left side of the piece is made with real pictures.

It was a true labour of love for me, so therefore I offer you a few bonus pieces of this artwork: :o)

First-- 115 Photoshop layers to create John Sheppard, Disney hero and prince of Atlantis, destined to fall in love with Rodney. I spent hours studying and drawing male Disney characters, just to get a better image of what John would have to look like. This was the final result:

Second-- 98 Photoshop layers to create an animated Atlantis as a background for Prince John.

As for the rest of the poster...

Third-- 103 Photoshop layers to create half an animated stargate.
Fourth-- 16 Photoshop layers to create John's animated hand draped over Rodney's shoulder.
Fifth-- 60 Photoshop layers to create the overall poster. The right half is animated, the left half is real, save John's hand on Rodney's shoulder. In this phase I also blended all the real and animated images together. Then I added the background and text.

You know what would make me happy now? If someone would actually write the story to go with this poster. I would do it myself if I had the time, but these days I don't have a lot of free time, so yeah...

Don't forget to visit [info]paintedspires to check out the rest of the wonderful fanart created for this challenge!!!

Thanks. :o) My biggest worry was about the Disney style, but it turned out okay in the end. :o)

This makes me wonderfully happy. You did an awesome job! \o/

PS: The left half is animated, the right half is real
You probably meant: The right half is animated, the left half is real?

Ah yes, the blending. I wanted it to be completely seamless, so it took quite some work. I'm glad you like it. :o) Thanks!

What an utterly gorgeous piece of fanart! I've always loved your creations, but wow, this one is *perfect.* You got the Disney style down pat without giving up John's general looks, and what a fantastic image of Rodney you've chosen--haven't seen it used before (and we all know how hard that feat is).

Most of all, though, I love the overall impression--an organic whole, a visual treat.

Bravo!

Thank you! :o) I'm so happy to read your remark about the Disney style. I wanted John to look like a true Disney-character, but at the same time the animated figure needed to have the 'essence' that is John Sheppard.

The image of Rodney is one of my most favourite. I just love his adorable smile. :o)

Thanks again!!!

Wow, this is amazing. I can see how much work you've put into it even before I read that you'd used so many layers. You've captured the Disney style, and I applaud your skill with photoshopping the two together. Just, amazing.

Wow! Seriously impressive amount of work, there. Animated Atlantis is just gorgeous (and since I painted a Stargate myself not too long ago, I know how much effort went into making it look that good). John looks very much like a Disney hero (including his big Disney smile *g*)and now I want to see the scene where Rodney freaks out over the concept of animated universes ...

As for Rodney-- yeah, I can just see him bitching about the fact that apparantly there's a universe out there where -in his eyes- the evil called Disney has free reign. ;o)

Holy cow - it's just brilliant. YOu really have Prince John down to a pat :D

I love the tuff of hair standing up in the middle coz John does have that. He's a got a dorky disney smile that really fits.... and oh my... that's... incredible - I mean the numer of layers and the incredible work. Did you draw John's hand or did you find a template somewhere somehow?

I love this :)

Thank you! :o)

The tuff of hair was necessary of course-- as you said: John wouldn't be John without his crazy hair. *g*

I drew the hand myself. It took some work to get it to look just right in shape and colours, but it worked out quite good in the end.

Thanks again!

That is so wonderful!! I love John - he looks SO Disney, and yet so recognizable, and the whole conceit of 'Enchanted' as a SGA AU makes me wriggle with delight. Wonderful stuff!

The hardest part was to make John into a Disney character, but without losing the typical John Sheppard essence. It needed to be JOHN, but different. I studied the typical male Disney figures and used that information to create John.

I love the movie Enchanted so much. It just puts this big smile on my face every time I see it. And since SGA makes me happy too, I really wanted to combine both.

Thank you very much!!!
