Ugly Stepchild Phenomenon [Sep. 4th, 2008|10:44 pm]

[music |None of Us Are Free - Solomone Burk]

Have you ever written something that while you're writing it you feel like it's the most brilliant thing you've ever written? But when you finish and read it over it becomes an ugly stepchild you need to hide under the stairs and never look at again?

It happens to me all the time.

I call it Ugly Stepchild Phenomenon. Or USP.

I hate it.

YOU GUYS!!! BONES IS BACK!!!

Okay, okay, so I've heard some things about rushed plot development and cheap jokes and blah blah blah, but surely THIS makes up for any possible indiscretion up to and including murder.

4x01 & 4x02 - Yanks In The UK (with bonus YouTube) )

I AM OFFICIALLY DEAD OF SHIP.

Which is inconvenient, since my Trauma Management assignment is kicking my ass, and it's due at midnight. Painful.

ETA: "No, you're the gay neighbor boy. Your love is the party wagon. Grayson is the tree. I'm Hodgins."

I haven't watched the scene, so I have no perception of context, but I'm pretty sure this is my new favourite line in the history of scripted television.

Procrastination is the Key to...(I'll tell you later.) [Sep. 4th, 2008|09:15 pm]

western_skies
Hello, my name is Morgan, and I've avoided doing my English homework for 5 days straight. In my defense, Chaucer is dead and probably doesn't care whether or not I read the Canterbury Tales. Again.

Feeling sort of homesick today, since it's looking like I may not get to go home or see my family at all until Christmas, but we'll see, I suppose. Eight hundred miles is a long way from home.

So I have this history professor, right? )

On the subject of not doing my English homework, I wish that I was any good at foreign languages whatsoever, because then I'd double-major in English in a heartbeat. But the requirement is four semesters of a foreign language for an English major, and I can't afford to fail/almost fail a class for four semesters. So I suppose I'll just end up minoring. Maybe.

Or going to the tropics and opening a Tikki bar. Come visit? First drink's on me. :)

I don't usually rec fic to my flist, but I urge you all to read What Matthew Left Behind . The author, [info]burningeden has been flamed recently because she chose to write a femslash pairing (Callie/Hahn) and this story, written as a response to said flamers, shows us all ,GLBT and straight, what can learn from her words.

-I have the sniffles. Bad. I think I'm headed to major sick territory if I don't kick it by tonight.
-UPS lost two - TWO!! - packages of mine from Amazon. One containing my Watchmen and Buffy season 8 books, and the other containing my Farscape S2 DVDs. I'm NOT happy.
-Did I mention I have sniffles? I hate the sniffles. I need to be pampered.
-I'm still on call for work tonight. Gah! The good part is that I'm at home for it, while two others on the team are still in the office. Suckers!
-Refuglicans everywhere on TV. Even BBC, pushing off Top Gear. Now that really makes me mad. I can't find one good channel that is free of them so I can enjoy.
-Too much Sarah Palin everywhere. It's fucking annoying. She even infested my nightmares the other night. Application migration and Sarah Palin do not make for restful dreams. I actually woke in the middle of the night and took some time to fall back to sleep. This has got to stop. How can anyone with two working brain cells take her seriously in any way???!!!

Ok ... off my whinebox. Pass me the drugs now.

1. Comment on this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.

[info]gorengal  gave "D"....

1) Danny Ross: Whats not to love about a character who can go up against the likes of Goren & Falacci & come out a winner. Pure entertainment value. He gets down and dirty with his detectives, and always has their backs Besides, he got the hots for....

2) Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers: All i can say is, if i ever get the chance, i'd like to hang out w/ her in the morgue & throw back a few beers...she's my type of gal...the best 5 minutes of the show.

3) Dr. House: What a prick...but i love'em...big time. i'd take him as my doc any day

4) Danny Sorensen: confident, smooth-beyond-his-years Danny could take control of a crime scene or interview room without breaking a sweat. Only problem ended up being the writers screwed him up too much (shame on you Mr. Bochco)

5) DiNozzo, Tony: He's my idea of the all American big brother/boy next door. Smart & funny & gets the job done.

Want a letter...let me know...Peace

You've Experienced 44% of Life

You have a good deal of life experience, about as much as someone in their late 20s.

You've seen and done enough to be quite wise, but you still have a lot of life to look forward to.

Regardless of your age, you may feel like you are still getting started.

Don't forget to look back at how far you've come. You've traveled a lot further than you might think.

I DO NOT HAVE SKIN CANCER. At least, not in those moles, and those were the biggest cause for concern.

I do, however, have a GIANT HOLE in my stomach where he took out the stitches. My skin decided to pop apart. I can see my fat pad. Anyone want a picture? Geena can take one next time we change the gauze. He didn't take out the stitches in my back.

By the way, he is EXTREMELY hot in his street clothes. His chest!

It's really weird to have your doctor say, "She's not a well girl," about you. At least it'll be good when he's called about my disability issues?

Now to take pills (antibiotics for another ten days! Diuretic for the swelling in my feet!) and ice my ankles while they're up. Fun times.

Notes from the Happy Trails, Days 5-8 [Sep. 4th, 2008|07:33 am]

[mood | cheerful]

Days 5-6: Vancouver, Lethbridge
Said goodbye to Dennis and Vancouver. Justin, who loves babies and younger kids, had taken an interest in Dennis, and had come to tell us, very excited, every time he'd managed to have some kind of interaction with him.

"He looked at me!"

"He smiled at me!"

"He said Thank you!"

I don't have any pictures of Dennis, so I'll have to ask Trinh, because the two I took were unrecognizably blurred.

Took a plane to Lethbridge, which is a small town in Alberta that [info]batita expressed great fondness towards. ::cough::

Day 7: Kayaking
Sadly, kayaks and cameras are not generally likely to be best of be friends. So we didn't bring ours. But we had a great time, kayaking about 5 hours in a river near Lethbridge.

I don't know if any of us had kayaked before. I know I hadn't. And we'd expected all the kids to be with adults, but there were only two double kayaks, so Emma went with my father, Justin went with me, and Daniel said, "Yeah, I can handle a kayak on my own."

Not My Kid.

He didn't do so well at first - couldn't get the hang of the thing, kept getting involuntarily turned around, snagged on rocks, and lagged behind the rest. Same as me, only I had Justin in my kayak so I also had to keep my cool and not pitch the hissy fit I was aching to pitch.

Happens so, so often in parenting: you not only have a hell of a time coping with something nigh-uncopable, but you also have to do so With A Smile, because you've got a little person who will be totally crushed if their parent loses it, and it's not just All About You.

Daniel had no such obligation and so he pitched a few hissies, and nobody could really blame him. One of the guides finally connected their kayaks together for a while, and gave him a bit of time to collect himself.

And then the kid gathered himself up, decided to try again, and bloody well learned to kayak.

As my dad said, "Daniel is my hero today, you know?"

Again: Not My Kid.

Emma was also not doing terribly well for a while there - it was cold, it was tough paddling, they kept getting snagged. The weather wasn't the only thing clouding over; her expression was more than a little stormy for a while there. And yet she also gathered herself up and was able to enjoy herself, despite the cold. Neat kid.

At the barbecue at the end of the kayaking, she said once again, "I still don't quite believe you're my sister."

"Well, you may not believe it, but I'm starting to. I would've been just like you during the kayak thing, except I wouldn't have been able to cheer up like you did."

A thoughtful look greeted this revelation ;)

No kayaks, but the Wuthering Heights weather was about this cheery )

Day 8: Horsies!
Our first serious day on horseback. Here's a shot of our cowboy guide, Trinh on Tess, Justin on Skeeter, Daniel on Peanuts, and Emma on Ginger.

The ranch is in a beautiful location. Look to the West, and you see mountains that would make any Ontario skiier swoon, but which Albertans call the Foothills. Look to the East, and the land is so flat that on a clear day you can see the back of your own head.

OK, maybe that's exaggerating a tad. But I think if you squint, you can probably see Manitoba in the horizon.

East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet )

We had two cabins available, but decided to only use one, as they were rather huge. The four old married folks stayed upstairs, and the four under-thirties stayed downstairs. Mark has the patience of a saint, and plays the role of the Cool Young Uncle/Older Brother extremely well. This included listening to Daniel's extensive D&D/game narrations, and playing various games that involved chasing children through bushes. God bless him.

Cool Uncle )

On the last day, we stopped at a lake for lunch, and did some canoeing. Also high on my God Bless Them list was one of our guides, Matty, a seventeen-year-old who completely enthralled Justin with his utter coolness and patience and sense of humour. And, you know, the whole cowboy thing. In fact, I don't think Justin remembers his name; he refused to call him anything but Cowboy.

Lake of the Cowboy )

Kind of cool home schooling tie-in: one of the days we were in Vancouver, we ended up visiting part of the city where there used to be a community of Japanese-Canadian fishermen, before they were interned and sent inland after Pearl Harbor. The boys had heard of the Japanese internment, both because I wrote a Civil Liberties paper that included it ([info]mynuet's suggestion, got a great mark, thank you [info]mynuet!) and because we'd watched The Greatest Canadian episode on David Suzuki (who was interned when he was six).

So one day we're eating around the campfire and Cowboy gets third helpings of rice. The other guide teases him about it and he says, "Hey, I'm part-Asian; I like rice."

"Really?" asks Trinh, who's Vietnamese.

"Yeah, my grandpa was Japanese. His family lived in BC till they were sent out here during WWII."

Small world.

Law & Order: Exiled
These Open Doors
By Nicolas

Genres: slash, fan-fiction
Rating: adults
Author’s note: You should read “Starved for Love”, “Christmas in Staten Island” and “Confessions over Beer” etc before this story. I’m trying to write these stories in order of the relationship development with “Stress Position” being sort of the ‘finale’ of the “Exiled” series. I’m trying not to rewrite too much L&O canon/history. Please listen to the song first.
Feedback: yes, please and suggestions too. Fanfiction.net will be hosting my Law & Order stories.
Main Characters: Mike Logan/OC
Disclaimer: Mike Logan belongs to Dick Wolf. However, Stephan Morgenthau belongs to me and is a fictional character. But Robert Morgenthau is the New York County District Attorney. I made a fictional grandson as homage to Mr. Morgenthau. All the places mentioned in these stories are actual landmarks in Staten Island and/or NY. I’m doing quite a bit of homework to make sure I put as much ‘reality’ in the stories as the series.

Stephan tried Mike’s phone again. Still no answer – why won’t Mike pick up the phone? He clutched 4 year old Lennie. Stephan stayed home another day since he got the flu over the weekend.

8:50 a.m.

Still no answer – Stephan was trembling. He watched CNN in absolute horrified disbelief. The front door opened and his son Christopher came running in toward him. Stephan put his arms around Chris tightly.

“Did you call Mike?”

Stephan nodded.

“Dad, that can’t be real. Tell me it’s a movie. Call him again.”

“Oh God…” Stephan’s last words – his eyes couldn’t believe it. “Oh God, what has happened to us?”

"Maybe they'll all move to Vancouver" [Sep. 3rd, 2008|10:03 pm]

mitfordgal
[Tags|, ]

Officially the most mind-boggling statement that I've heard so far tonight:

"Sarah Palin received more votes in her race for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden received for President of the United States." - Mike Huckabee

Since Sarah is no longer running for Mayor and Joe is no longer running for President, I have absolutely no idea what this means. File it under "things that make you go 'uh?'"

I read  [info]vegawriters ' entry and I agree with her so much - I was raised to be able to see both sides of every issue. My parents weren't really hardcore evangelical Christians until I was in high school so I had plenty of exposure to issues and beliefs that weren't preordained as "right" for me. My parents have always voted Liberal. My father, during the last Presidential election, had to go up to one of the leaders in his church and tell him to stop the "George Bush is the second coming" rhetoric because it presupposed that everyone in the room was for him and if you weren't, you were anti-God. So I want to see the good in everyone and some part of me thinks that if you take a little bit of everything and walk a moderate path, things will work out.

So I'm watching this RNC convention and trying my best to see the good but I can't seem to find it. I'm a Democratic in my thinking - if you've read this journal for very long, you already know that. So maybe my blinders are on. I do think John McCain is an amazing man to want to have a very public life after everything he's been through. I'm sure there was some PTSD when he came back to the US. I have admired the way that he stood firm against the Religious Right even when James Dobson went on the airwaves and refused to support him and told the evangelicals to stay home on election day. But in nominating Sarah Palin, he's caved to the Religious Right since she's perfect in their eyes - pro-life, anti-gay, gun-toting, abstinence-only, daughter marrying the father of her baby at 17, keeping her Down's syndrome child, son shipping off to Iraq... sure she seems to be reform-oriented but just how many serious issues has she had to deal with?

Ok, part of my heart goes ahhhhhh when I see Cindy McCain sitting beside Bristol, holding Trig. I'm a sucker for the hardluck, inspirational story. But Rudy Giuliani's attacks on Obama are going above and beyond good taste and I may have to turn off the TV. Since when is changing your mind a sign of weakness? I would rather have someone admit that they are wrong and change their stance on an issue than stubbornly stick by something that's blatently wrong just so they won't get crucified in the press. And having "300 foreign policy advisors" is not as evil as Rudy is making it out to be. If you don't listen to anyone and you do your own thing, I think they call you a dictator.

Ok, I'll stop now. Tomorrow Cathy and I are driving to Dundas to visit Greg. Yeay! I get to see my friends. I don't care if I can't walk because of these dumb ankles... I'm going.
