Guide to a half dozen....
posted on 19-4-2004 at 17:23 by phobo on http://old.UP.org.nz/communityHalf a dozen minutes - a guide - Introduce yourself and your topic fairly quickly... wit is not essential but funkiness can help. Some of our speakers have used interesting images, sound (which can be hard to hear) and short movies. Try to get the intros out within the first 90 seconds to 2 minutes. What seems to work is... who you are, what you're going to speak about, an anecdote about why you should be speaking about the topic. - The business end... You've been invited because you know about the topic so tell us about it. There are a few ways to go at this stage. - cover one issue very specifically. - cover the generalities of the topic alluding to ways people can find out more What has worked for our speakers in the past is presenting interesting stories and examples (particularly where things have gone wrong, where something is leading edge or where violence was involved). Speakers with interesting power points, demos or gadgets can also speak to these. - The closing bit... Use the last minute or so to close the cans you've opened. Closing can include finishing the story, explaining how to do something, suggesting what the audience can do to find out more, offering last minute advice, drinking beer. FAQ's - can I plug my brand? Sure you've been asked to speak because you know about a topic, chances are your brand is tied up with that knowledge. We'd prefer it wasn't an out and out product placement but understand that your brands approach could be what you talk about. -can I be saucy? Definitely, for us PC means Personal Computer not Politically Correct. We like to push at accepted norms BUT there usually needs to be a purpose to the sauciness. Walk the fine line of humour and acceptability. - Six minutes doesn't seem like long, can I cover something in that time? Six minutes is ages, try not to cover too much and you'll be able to present something that stays interesting and leads the audience onto more. There is a question time after the talks and time to network after the event if people want to find out more. - So in a nutshell what format should I follow? What seems to work is that old third form (or is that called year 8 now?) standard Introduction... Body... Conclusion. Although maybe Conclusion... Introduction... Body could work too. - Swearing? yes; but we do speak the Queens English. - Nudity? prefer not - Off topic talks? at your own risk, most of the audience is there to hear about the topic, though a few (mostly programmers and entrepreneurs) are there for the food and beer. Transcribing: UP Expat 08 Networking event with the Wellies
Been transcribing the AV from the recent "Tale of Four Cities" expat panel discussion tonight. About 1/4 of the way there. It's got timecode for subtitling the video, but has the first part of speaker intros. As below the cut ( read on... )Sore fingers from trying to keep up with the speech rate in there. even with it on 0.5 x it's to quick for my tired fingers. For some reason the video uploader failed last try, and the newer version won't let me login. I have the audio, so might mp3 that and put it up too. Watch this space. The Unlimited Potential inter-Network Über Christmas Party 2007
Lets get together in mid December for one last UP event - an inter-Network Christmas Party. Meet people from other networking groups in Wellington, and enjoy an evening of food and celebration. The Unlimited Potential inter-Network Über Christmas PartySo the plan is to set a date, and find a couple of venues - a pub for pre-event drinks and warm-up, then a resturant meal and table-talk, followed by another bar or coffee house. Theres is some discussion over in the forums - so get involved. UP will be helping with RSVPs, and chipping in for the bar tab, and stirring UP the local networking scene - but the rest is up to you. up.org.nz isn't working for me this evening. Reintegration...
Last year 280 people attended. This year I intend to attend:  Virtually all prisoners return to their homes. About two thirds re-offend within two years. Around 51% are back in prison within five years. When the prisoners come home, that experience touches the lives of their families, their victims, their neighbours, and the wider community. One in every 47 Maori men between the ages of 18 and 30 is in prison. Networks of children, families and neighbours in high crime areas are feeling the harmful effects when offenders are imprisoned and returned to their homes, worse for the experience. The government’s policy on prisoner reintegration is in its infancy, and impact on the community, community response and community responsibility are yet to be fully considered. There has never been a public conference which addresses this serious social issue in detail. NZMac.org - forming a community of Mac Users in NZ

We're a huge landmass, but we're not really a Mac continent yet. That's soon to change, though, as I spread the faith throughout all of China and into the rest of my Asia. Writing this at 00:18 -- I feel I don't want to fall asleep. This could be the start of something huge. It has a name -- MacAsia.org, the Asia-Pacific Macintosh User Union. And its launch will be heralded shortly after 3 PM on October 21, 2006, with direct iChat AV links to Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Taipei and other places around China and Asia. It's 3am... [moviefest stuff]

He'd apparently been grizzling for 20 minutes, so you get an idea of how well I sleep, and how well I was trained by my 6 younger brothers to ignore baby cries. I hate waking at 3am.. let alone still being awake at 4am. I tend to get a million brilliant ideas... that i have to do something about - 'cause God only knows I won't have a spare moment when the rest of the world is awake (well half my of it)... so ideas: MovieFest "Flybuys". A link is worth say $1. A click is worth, say $0.05c... referrer bliss, and freebies for referrers - free entry (or say knock $5 off for 5 links?). If it works for the porn industry and MacZOT....In 2004 we had Bronze sponsorship.. lets improve on that. Theres fair bit of code that was me learning PHP.. and i'd prefer something modular and flexible and transparent. OSS. However i'm told DNN is brilliant and for real men, and PHP is for baby hackers. WelMac Workshop!

The fee to attend is $30 per person. See the workshop page for more info. Reason for posting here is that I spent a few hours coding and playing with html, javascript and php, and it feels good.
