Her eyes scanned the room slowly. One headphone was still in place, the lyrics of the song that was playing molding her emotions. She drummed her fingers on her desk as she listened to Iruka, perfectly able to separate music from human speech.
On that day, when you need your brothers and sisters to care.."- and that is why you must work hard. I will now announce the teams and your captains. On the board is where you will meet your instructor tomorrow. Once your names are called, please write down where to meet your captains, and then you are dismissed."
Kyla sighed.
..but rest assured I will not let you down. I walk beside you but you may not see me.."- Yamato. Now, Team 3 will be: Calem Cross," Kyla heard Calem shout "ha!" at his name, "Jack Meadowcroft-"
Jack said nothing, but she heard him exhale. He must have been holding his breath.
"- and Kyla London."
We'll always be ready, because we will always be there. She turned her head in acknowledgement, copying her captain's name down.
Shiranui Genma.
Rooftop of the hospital.
9 AM.
She copied it all and stood, glancing at her new teammates as she headed for the door. She knew them as aquaintances. Calem's bright eyes shone with excitement and he was smiling up at Jack, waving. Jack's eyes were calculating, but not lacking enthusiasm. He smiled at Calem. She briefly wondered how she looked to them.
And they turned to her in unison.
She stopped and turned also. Calem was smiling and waving and Jack had his arms crossed over his chest, but his eyebrows were slightly raised as if to say, "You in?"
She managed a small smile. After a second, she turned and walked out.

That night, they lay in bed thinking.
Calem was excited about everything. Meeting his new teammates and his new sensei, and getting to prove himself. His first impression of Jack was that he was very serious, but that gave him confidence in him. And Kyla, well, he didn't know. She was a loner, that's for sure. But he hoped she would warm up to them.
Jack was aloof. He only worried about his new sensei and hoped that he could learn a lot from him. As for first impressions, he thought Calem was goofy and probably lacked discipline, and Kyla was probably a very angry person who was neglected as a child.
Kyla was much like Jack. She didn't feel excited, really. She felt eager. Eager to begin the life of a shinobi. There were many reasons for this, but she didn't think about them. She immediately liked Calem, because happy people were much easier to be around. She didn't know what to think about Jack, and only thought that she would have to get to know him better before making any assessments.
Sitting on a tree branch watching the stars, Genma wondered what tomorrow held. He grinned.
