Foyt says son won't drive
Larry Foyt is on the 500's entry list and hopes to qualify the second car of A.J. Foyt Enterprises.
But Foyt's father, who owns the team, said Wednesday someone else will drive the car if it is used this month.
"I'm not letting him in it," A.J. Foyt said. "He's more important to me as (the team director) than he is as my driver. His future is running this team."
Larry Foyt, who graduated from Texas Christian University, drove in three consecutive 500s, the most recent in 2006, never finishing better than 30th. He had a brief but undistinguished NASCAR career.
"He's a good driver and knows what he's doing, but he doesn't have a killer instinct," A.J. Foyt said. "He's also broke his back once, and I don't want that to happen again."
Larry Foyt remains hopeful he'll climb into the seat but said it depends more on landing sponsorship.
He understands how protective his father is about family members.
"It's really hard when you're related to A.J. and you drive for him," he said. "He's always afraid you're going to get hurt."

From WhoWon.com:
ASA Educational Series Names Larry Foyt Spokesperson
by Steve Pados
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Larry Foyt has been named the official spokesman of the American Speed Association Educational Series.
The new series, set to begin racing in the spring, pairs race teams and participating high schools together. The program works in a uniquely designed format to educate students on how to work on racecars through classroom studies, teamwork, and race day preparation. Students work towards earning scholarships and furthering their education to become certified automotive technicians. The groups will each field a team with the new American Speed Association Midwest Tour.
In accepting the role as the series spokesman, Foyt said, "The ASA Educational Series will make an immediate impact in the Midwest, but the key element is the student population. These high school students will play a major role in the development of the series. They will have the capacity to learn the fundamentals of everything related to racecars and through the process will earn scholarships to become technicians. I am deeply honored to serve as the spokesperson for this new group."
Foyt presently serves as Team Director for the ABC Supply IRL IndyCar team. He began his racing career with go-kart competition in 1993 then advanced through the ranks of Formula 2000, SCCA, American Speed Association National Tour, and the NASCAR Busch Series and Nextel Cup. He made his debut at the Indianapolis 500 in 2004 and recorded a 28th place finish. He sustained his worst racing injury in the 2005 running of the event at the Brickyard and sat out the remainder of the season. Recently Foyt has done speedway testing for Evernham Motorsports.
The ASA Educational Series was co-founded by Steve Einhaus and Pete Raskovic and is headquartered in Beloit Wisconsin and can be found on the web at www.education.asamidwesttour.com
Raskovic concluded, "I have known Larry Foyt for some time and he is an extremely educated individual who is an equally sincere person. Larry truly values the importance of an education and will be a great role model for the students involved with the new series. His affiliation with the series will play a significant role in growing this new concept in our home base, the Midwest. Larry is a great guy to work with and we are honored to welcome him to the series."

From Insider Racing News:
Larry Foyt Back For One Race
Veteran driver Larry Foyt, Silestone USA and Key Motorsports have announced a partnership that will enter Foyt in the 2007 season-opening NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Daytona International Speedway.
The Silestone by Cosentino Chevrolet Silverado will become the first-ever race truck to bear the new Key Motorsports #44 number, joining the #40 Key Motorsports entry that will be driven by former NCTS champion Mike Bliss.
The son of Hall of Fame Indy Car driver A. J. Foyt, Larry has several years of NASCAR racing experience under his belt. The 29-year-old Texan last raced competitively in what is now the Nextel Cup Series in 2003 for A.J. Foyt Racing. In 20 starts that year, Foyt posted a season-best 16th place finish in the Homestead, FL season finale in which he also enjoyed his best qualifying effort of 12th. He also drove in three races in 2004 including his first Daytona 500 before sponsorship woes put him on the sidelines.
Foyt first broke into NASCAR racing in 2001, running the first of two full seasons for his own Busch Series team. In 65 starts over those two seasons, Foyt posted two top 10, six top 15 and 16 top 20 finishes and earned just over $1 million. He finished 20th in the championship driver point standings in 2002 before moving into the Nextel Cup Series the following season.
Foyt recently took on the role of Team Director for his father’s IndyCar Series operation, one in which Larry also served as a driver for a handful of races over a three year stint beginning in 2004 that included several Indy 500 starts.
Larry began his driving career in 1993 driving go-karts and has added experience in USAC Formula 2000, SCCA Formula 2000 and American Speed Association (ASA) late model competition. He is also a graduate of Texas Christian University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications in 2000.
“It’s great that we have been able to put this deal together for a run at Daytona,” Foyt said. “I loved racing there in the Nextel Cup and Busch Series and am looking forward to my first experience in the Craftsman Truck Series. I want to do a good job for Silestone since this is the company’s very first venture into racing, and I am looking forward to the challenge. I am thrilled that Curtis (Key) has opened his race shop to host this opportunity,” he added. |

From the official website:
While A.J. Foyt will be at Infineon Raceway this weekend, his son Larry will not be. Larry Foyt is overseeing the liquidation auction of A.J.'s NASCAR Nextel Cup race shop in Mooresville, N.C. Famed racing auctioneer Charlie Sentman is conducting the auction which starts tomorrow, Wednesday, August 23rd. The auction begins at 10 a.m. and runs for five days, concluding Sunday, Aug. 27th. Sale items include a transporter, souvenir trailer, several stock cars, two Indy cars, a large assortment of parts and equipment plus racing memorabilia and clothing. More information on the auction is available at www.sentmanauctions.com.
"I hate to be leaving down there but I can't be in two places at once-it just doesn't work," said A.J. Foyt of his NASCAR operation. "Since I don't have a NASCAR team anymore, it doesn't make sense to hold onto all that stuff. To be honest, I didn't realize how much stuff I still had. I'm sure people who go to the auction will be shocked. But I'm from Texas and things are always bigger in Texas."

Felipe Giaffone: No. 14 ABC Supply/Dallara/Honda/Firestone Larry Foyt: No. 41 ABC Supply/Dallara/Honda/Firestone
* A.J. Foyt will participate in his 49th consecutive Indy 500. He was the first driver to win the Indy 500 four times (1961, 1964, 1967 and 1977). As a team owner, he’s won it three times: twice when he was driving (1967 and 1977) and again in 1999 with Kenny Brack driving.
* Felipe Giaffone, who is currently 10th in the IRL IndyCar Series standings, will participate in his sixth Indy 500. His best start was fourth in 2002 and his best finish was third that same year. He started 33rd twice (2001 and 2005) and finished 15th twice (2004 and 2005). He finished 33rd in 2003 after starting 16th. This year he qualified 21st with an average speed of 221.579 mph.
* Larry Foyt will compete in his third straight Indy 500. As a rookie he qualified 22nd and started 30th last year. He was out of action early in both events and sustained a back injury when he hit the wall in turn one last year. This year he will start 23rd with an average speed of 221.3 mph.
* A.J. Foyt on Indy: “When we got here we were behind because we had to miss the Open Test they had here right after Japan. The logistics of going back to Texas, fixing the cars plus preparing two more entries, well there wasn’t enough time to do it all. So when we got here we were already playing catch-up. The rain put us further behind and then the tire situation just compounded the challenge. We’re making changes and we’re gaining but there are 12 to 14 cars that are operating better. I think with the changes we’ve made for Carb Day we’ll be okay, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
* Felipe Giaffone: “We made some changes after qualifying which improved the car. We have to focus on staying on the lead lap through our pit strategy and timing the yellows right. Last year I just survived and finished 15th. I have a much better car this year so I should be a lot more competitive. I think all of the teams are going to have a tougher time because of the harder tire compound—it makes it tougher to hit the right set-up for the race but it’s the same for everyone…Last year I was more anxious going into the race because we had no time to practice. Now I feel I know what the car will do from the first lap on so I’m more confident because I have a better idea of what to expect.”
* Larry Foyt: “My goal is to finish the race. We had some bad luck the last two years here and were out pretty early. It’s been a strange month. As a second weekend qualifier, I’ve had limited track time and with all the rain, it’s made it even less. We’ve struggled with the balance but my dad’s making some changes before Carb Day. I’m not sure what my car’s going to be until we do that final practice. Come race day, I just want to be there at the end. If we are, I think we’ll have a decent finish.” |

Larry got engaged last week. She is a singer and actress and is currently living in LA. When I talked to Larry yesterday he said he is "very happy to be engaged."
At dinner, he had the ring presented to their table on a silver tray with roses. Yes, it was totally girly, but he's all in love so I am not teasing him about it.
This doesn't change anything about his race schedule. |

Someone posted this on a forum so I thought I would post it here.
Larry Foyt Starts His Own NASCAR Busch Team
Larry Foyt has partnered with David Tomasello, owner of a North Carolina-based apparel business, to form Foyt Racing L.L.C. The new team plans to field cars in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2006. Foyt and Tomasello are currently seeking sponsorship to fund the two-car team, although only car would compete on the entire circuit. The second car, to be driven by Foyt, would compete in a limited schedule.
Foyt’s preparation in setting up the new team has kept him out of the cockpit for most of this season with the exception of a couple starts in ARCA and competing in the Indianapolis 500 for his father A.J. Foyt. It was in that race that the 28-year-old driver sustained an injury to his back when he spun and hit the wall in turn one. He was released from Methodist Hospital the day after the race and has since made a full recovery.
The team will be based in Mooresville, N.C., in the same shop which formerly served A.J. Foyt’s NASCAR Nextel Cup team. Larry Foyt has experience running a Busch team which he did in 2001-2002 when he drove in the NASCAR Busch Series under the auspices of his father A.J. Young Foyt’s best start was fifth which he posted several times in 2001-02 and his best finish was eighth at Talladega Superspeedway in 2002. |
