    Poll Push
The hatemongering liberal media elites at PBS are questioning whether Sarah Palin is qualified to be vice-president. Take their poll here.

To restore fairness in online polls, the American Patriarchy Association wants to know if you think Barack Obama is qualified to serve as President of the United States. Poll here (e-mail required? to vote)

larp theory - 'The Shadows were right'
Something I came across while rereading the course material today was the 'crisis' in psychology in 1970's. Essentially, it was between the traditional experimental/statistical approach and the more modern qualitaitive/discourse/social/critical approach. At the time, academics got quite angry speaking about these things. The critical approach has become well established in the UK now, with both sides co-existing. However, they co-exist by not talking to each other. Essentially the subject consists of a massive chasm, which at it's route I think stems back to whether psychology is/should be a 'hard' or 'soft' science (or indeed whether it should be a BSc or a BA). As the authors of the course text (and a government review of academia which they quote) point out, this isn't particularly productive.

What this reminded me of is the Larp community. Back in the early years of this decade, the larp scene was full of angry vocal debates. In the UK, the archive of Pagga has a lot of examples of this. Abroad, Turku got published, followed by the 'Gamer's bill of rights,' and lots of emotional 'one true way'-ism stances. These days the larp scene seems to be a lot more relaxed, with a lot of recognition of diversity. While this is a lot more friendly, I think I can see a flaw with this. Accepting each style as it's own localised 'truth' gets in the way of useful discussion.

Less seriously, there is something else this reminds me.

In the IC cosmology of the swedish elf larp (Trollpack is the OC name of the group), there are two gods that take turns (on a cycle that lasts for thousands of years) being active while the other slumbers (the blind goddess of justice, and the dragon god of conflict/chaos). Not unlike the real babylonian mythology that Babylon 5 is based on. Currently the god of chaos is awake, and his favoured race the dark elves (with a butch culture with classical & fascist undertones) have gone in 200 years (very quick by elven standards) from being a repressed minority to the dominant power in the world. However, they have now hit the fundemental paradox of the revolutionary. Once you win, you try to maintain your status quo, and end up as a force for stasis, trying to imprint your order on the world. They don't have anyone worthy or suitable left to make war upon, and their culture and society is failling apart. The more they stamp down internal rebels, the further they move from their divinly appointed purpose for being.

The point - conflict (at least in the context of academic debate) can actually be a good thing, in that it's a mechanism for exchange of ideas and growth.

    Oh my GOD!
Look at what time it is! How did this happen?

So, without further ado; Friday, October 31st is once again "horror" movie night here in Lakewood!

    Where: My house!
When: Friday, October 31st. First movie goes in at 7pm
What: Well, whatever we decide to put in, woo!

You probably want to do any sort of dinner thing before hand as we are poor and can't FEED you, but we'll see about getting snacky type things :) And of course, bring anything YOU want to consume if you have specifics in mind.

I look like I got beat up. I took a pretty bad fall on asphalt on Saturday night at the Haunted Trail. My arm is sporting a huge ass black/blue and deep red bruise and my knee isn't much better.

Heh. It was all worth it though.

KOL has a new area for level 13s and above - the swamp. I can't wait to play around in it, even though it will delay my ascension. :)

Feast game this weekend! Good Gods - buy everything Wednesday night, make the Nutcato on Thursday, start the stew Saturday afternoon; finish up second batch Saturday night after the Haunt...yeesh. Gonna be stupid busy :)

Sunday is the Feast game. I'm wondering how Ilana is going to take being served by ANYONE else. She is uncomfortable with that. Should be fun though.

In the footsteps of King Agamemnon
Today we took a drive out to a site called Epidaurus which was a center for healing in around 4th century BC. There was a hospice where the ill could come and seek healing from the god Asklepion. The site was active till about 6th century AD. They appear to be rebuilding the central temple to Apollo as well as the main altar to Asklepion. Can't wait to see what that looks like. There is also a large theatre that is very well preserved. It seats about 14,000 people as is still used for performances of ancient Greek plays.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidaurus

Next we drove off to the site of ancient Mycenae, the home of King Agamemnon. The city was started aound 1900 BC and there is still quite a bit of remnants there. It was believed for a long time that the city was just a myth, but a German archeologist found the site in the late 1800's. There's nothing like walking around the ruins of a nearly 4,000 year old city!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycenae

Finally we came back to Napflia and took some time climbing around the remains of Palamidi Castle on the hill above the city. It was a tad eerie climbing around on the crumbling walls of a fortress so high up.

I've also uploaded some photos of my trek.

    Fantasy Off Day
Once again, I managed to totally not start the WR that had a good day. Roddy White? Totaly on my bench. Coles and Santana Moss? Totaly did squat all day. Oh, and I started New England's defense...over Tampa Bay, who had an epic day. I also had St. Louis's kicker on the bench, who score tons of points as well. Deep, sorrowful sigh.

Despite that, I am still ahead by 14 points over Dale, but he has a big card left to play...Plaxico Burris, against Cleavland tonight. Ouch. I am not counting any chickens, as he could totally have an awesome game.

Also, I am off today. Wahoo!

I haven't been reading the Cam list, since my PC that is on it is himself not reading it right now, but Frosty alerted me that. apparently, Garrett has been appointed by Atieus the welcoming comitte for the cool kids club.

I find the visual of Garrett hand delivering a gift basket to someone with his tender, yet powerful hands endlessly amusing.

    Moots 2, 2008 - a disappointment
I've been to Nijmegen before, but never actually to the woods near Nijmegen Dukenburg. That was where the Moots was held. We found it quickly enough and managed to pitch our tent not completely on the sand but partially on the grass edge around the field.

[info]drahkan had asked us to bring our Pathfinder outfits as we would be undercover on some mission. It sounded brutal, sounded like fun.
Sadly, the quest we would be returning from could not be played so we stumbled into the game with numerous wounds without ever having played to receive them. *sigh*
We were healed by some guys from Phoenix and Lord Mori'gil spent most of the evening talking to various people. We were present, but did not engage in conversation.

Highlight of my evening was the remark I made when we were watching Bâh's ritual. I was wearing a sleeveless cloak of Drahkan's, which had a small emblem with a wolf's paw on the hem. "I sure hope this doesn't mean the Wolf Clan will be humping my leg." I said to Lord Mori'gil.
Sadly, our Lord sat next to Ral of the wolf clan, who kept on winking and calling me over for the duration of the ritual.
Bâh's ritual was fun to watch though. She was putting her frustration for Phoenix into a cookie, and it was entertaining.
The night was very cold though, and I slept poorly, waking up to the thought "What the hell am I doing here?"

Truth is, as loyal as Aliph is, the only thing we do in the play is to facilitate for Drahkan. The only thing we facilitate is peace & quiet. People are less eager to approach Lord Mori'gil when there's two heavily armoured guys standing behind him, after all.
As far as the roleplay goes: yes, we are standing right next to Lord Mori'gil. That doesn't mean we're necessarily paying attention to what is being said. If the Lord gives us an order, we will hear it - both because it's something he says and because usually he uses a stronger, louder voice to issue orders - but the rest of the conversation passes us by completely. We're paying attention to the surroundings, who have their weapons unsheathed, is that a monster running towards us, and why is Vosco touching Lord Mori'gil? Again?

It works the other way around too. Because we're never included in the conversation next to a "They're with me" or a "We are alone". So yes, we do stand around Navigators, faction leaders, and other VIPs, but we do not talk with them and they have no idea who, exactly, we are.
I guess Aliph's background hit the mark with her "Without my lord, I am nothing".

And that is exactly why it's not fun to play her. I sat outside the fighter's guild on Saturday and a blue-painted woman came up to me. "Do you know someone who can learn me fight?" she asked.
"No." I answered. Because I could not, nor could Dandin, and Lord Mori'gil hardly ever takes on students.
"But this is the Fighter's Guild, isn't it?" she asked.
"Yes." I answered. And then the woman turned around and walked away.
    There was no fun there.

So by the time it was four o'clock I was seriously bored, had sore feet (a blister) and a sore back. I finally called Nathreee, who lives in Nijmegen and went to visit her and her husband elsewhere in Nijmegen.
There was fun there. And a lot of it too!

When I got back I decided to go back in character and there was a huge bash in the Pentagon. This was rather fun, although I could do very little with the spear I was holding in such a large bash. I went down twice, still I got healed, and survived.
    Dammit.

Sunday I decided against going back in character, and instead cleaned up the tent and packed the car. I was left with an hour or two of waiting until Time Out was called and we could clear away the tent of the Fighter's guild. Only after that were we allowed to check out and go home.

So that's it, and I've said it before and I'll say it again now: no more Vortex Adventures for me. Maybe it will be more fun with a different role, who knows? But Aliph....it's just not my kind of role to play.

    la!
Yesterday was F.A.C.T.S. 2008 in Ghent. I must say that it was quite fun for the first half hour or so. Because the first half hour is when you still get to explore everything and be hopeful that you'll come accross something cool that is affordable.
Of course, I failed at that, because everything was so fucking _EXPENSIVE_.
T-shirts were all € 20 at least, and most were around € 30.
I'd love to have a black fitted Decepticon tee, but NOT at € 30 you know.

It was also 70% Star Wars. Dan and Jon, you guys would have LOVED it. Loads of r/c droids, those were cute. Loads of Star Wars groups too. I didn't even know we had some in Belgium. I was tempted to find out how to join up, but the people in the groups were all a bit HARDCORE, which scared me loads.

I handed out flyers for Cam with [info]masquerade_ad, so hopefully we'll get new members soon :)

And a nice guy with a PSP camera showed me how it worked, which was cool because I had been holding off getting one 'till I actually saw it in action :)
    Huzzah for nice people.

Speaking of nice people, a friend of Daisy (a girl I know) _recognised_ me. I was quite baffled. She was super nice too, which was super fabulous :)

All my pictures of the convention are here.

I was sad to see I was one of the two steampunks there, we need MORE steampunks dammit!

My costume (I was a steampunk aviator, but didn't wear too much because it was super hot yesterday and cosplay cons are traditionally boiling temperatures wise.

    Books sometimes catch my eyes

Today I uploaded one called "Our Jealous God: Love That Won't Let Me Go"

Blurb on the back: You can be glad God calls Himself jealous. If He didn't care who--or what---else we loved, something would be terribly wrong. The truth is, God watches our thoughts, our smallest deeds, our most casually spoken words."

    Good old-fashioned fun
That pretty much defines my week and weekend.

It saw Crossfire going through a dungeon with good efficiency, and a classic night of us working at peak ability once again. Both the steady leadership of [info]maglok and the rapid annihilation of any possessing nasties by [info]nathreee really came through for us. Smokey bought it a few times, but I've come to depend on Marlix jumping in with a well-timed enervate or patch healing to assist me at critical junctions with my own healing duties. I loved it. It was cool, too, that we had an audience at the Ring of Blood who assisted us with a timely rez, too. Thanks, Jo! Visited the Exodus location, too, and very happy that very few things have been changed, but a few things have been upgraded. Jum.

    Symbols 8 - chance )

Monday was very, very difficult. I had a larp-dip the size of Kansas, not made any easier by the fact that despite my working place going fine the central organisation of Zadkine is going through a few... changes... Let's just say it is a very weird enviroment to be working in at the moment. Still, I completed my Advising in the ICT course and I'm currently going to work on a Train the Trainer course. Took control for a moment of a meeting on Tuesday when it was spinning out of control, and spent the rest of my week coordinating, working extra on Friday and picking up a few printers. Did have a good plotmeet for Exodus and a good meet for Lex, and both are currently on track (though especially for the latter there are still a few hurdles to process). Have been feeling a bit tired, though, but that could be explained by losing over 7 kilos in the past two weeks. Decided to go easy on the weight loss, though I'm dipping towards my ideal weight at a reasonable speed aided by the Wii fit.

And for some reason, despite meeting up with my friends over the past week, I've been missing quite a few of them. Happens after a larp weekend this intense, I fear. Coming week and weekend will see Exodus preparations, and the Court Session of Vampire Rotterdam next weekend. Other then that, I plan to go to Nox Obscura on one of the days (likely Saturday). I can live with this pace of life.

For the Camarilla artists amongst us
x-posted from [info]camarilla. I'm posting it on my own journal too because I know at least two Cammie artists on my flist that aren't on that group.

    Hello everyone,

Every Cammie artist is most welcome to join up, but we do request you read the group's profile before joining just so you know which rules there are etc.

    Hotmail is stom
    Dus Hotmail is stom.

Mijn dag kon niet erg veel slechter meer... maar dit slaat alles.

    Nafplion, Greece
hello from Nafplion. It's a small town on the southern coast of Greece. We stopped off at the ancient site of Corinth which was just teeming with ruins.

Then we drove across a precarious mountain route to reach the coastal city of Nafplion. Our hotel is a tiny private run place right in the heart of the old city. I'm sitting on my balcony and this is what I see. There's an old fortress on the hill above and you can see the walls from the hotel. Greece is an amazing place!

Well that was an interesting day
Lets see how to explain to everyone what I did this weekend. Friday night I spent time with [info]notmikey before he left to go see his Nana this weekend. It was a good early part of the evening for the most part then I when and spent the rest of the evening with [info]kendokamel we talked and plotted and talked about things that she could do for a Con she's running.
Saturday morning Joy came and picked me up and took me to the event. I got there donned my Heralds tabbard and finally worked on DOING the first event where I was voice herald (announcer for you non-SCA minded folk). I was worried and I don't think I did well but people actually said It wasn't horrid and it did take me out of my comfort zone. Special thanks to [info]nauraki for giving me pointers. I was still depressed from the past 8 days so I didn't really look my best yesterday but I did try. I got to help in the kitchen some too which was nice as a distraction. I think I ran through the entire event 25 times never really stopping anywhere for more than 5 minutes at a time. Then I got to announce half of the main feast meal :D. Speaking of which it was WONDERFUL. Afterward I helped clean up for a little while and was talked into drinking and staying the night in the cabins. I actually had some fun yesterday. It was not as much as I could have had. I didn't dance :( I didn't fight... And Everywhere I went it felt like there was a hole because a huge part of me wasn't in it and a huge part of my SCA life wasn't there. But all in all I have some amazing friends who hung out with me got silly with me knew what I needed and even made sure I got tucked into bed when all was said and done. I <3 you guys.
At about 4ish in the AM after all were in bed I went out and stood in in the clearing by the feast hall and watched the stars. The stars you can't see in Bloomington or in St Louis or any city. I sat out there for an hour and reflected. Imagining how small I was how life comes at us and we never stop. I thought of love and hope and fear and trust and accepted things inside my own life and vowed to do better with the workings in the future. It felt sacred somehow, although I can't put my finger on it as to how. Well That is all I can think to say now take care all have a great sunday and a wonderful week.
