Murder, Absinthe, Intrigue, Adventure!

What:
1930's Murder Mystery Dinner Party
When: August 13, 2005
Where: Fredericksberg, VA - USA

I guess the best way to describe the event is to link you to the live journal created for the party, [info]maudsley_farm.  There you can see a list of characters and the letter all of the players received as the in character and out of character invitation.

For those who want the quick run-down:
A bitter, old antiquarian, Mr. Rothschild,  has invited several guests to his house to play a game against each other.  The prize will earn the players their deepest desires.  Fame, fortune, and acceptance could be theirs if they win the game.

The prizes for winning:
1. The Staff of Moses
2. The Sum of Mr. Rothschild's Estate
3. The Elixer of Life
4. 5 Million Dollars
5. Evidence About a Politically and Racialy Motivated Slaying
6. The Components and Spell to Summon Cerberus

Unfortunately all of the pictures were taken after the event, so people's make-up and costumes are a bit disheveled (August is hot in Virginia).

This is me as my character, Dr. Marcus L. Jameson.  He was the quintessential Indiana Jones-esque pulp character.  He was part British and part Egyptian, but mostly awesome.  My wife made the costume (I helped with a lot of the hand sewing); it is based off of patterns for a 1930's suit called the "Palm Beach Suit".  It was a three piece suit and included a matching pith helmet I purchased on line, but since it was the end of July/early August, I took those off.  It got pretty hot chasing after Nazis and Cerberus!  With the help of Austin Skelly and Belladora Giuseppe, he was able to secure the Staff of Moses from the Nazi, Berend Waggoner, and use the find to gain access into the secret organization, the Order of Horus.

This is Belladora Giuseppe, undercover nun workering for the Pope (never would have guessed, would you).  She's as dangerous as she is lusty and quick with both her wit and Marcus's gun.  She was invaluable in killing Cerberus, once it had been summoned, and in protecting the Staff of Moses from the Nazis.

The Col. Charles Denton of His Majesties Royal Army.  A hunting enthusiast, who came to the party in the hopes of hunting and killing Cerberus.  Once the beast was summoned by the gypsy witch, Isabella Durriken, he took point in the hunting and slaying of the dangerous guardian of the under-world.

This is a picture of my extraordinarily talented wife.  She was playing Phyllis Allen, a formerly popular theatre actress who was slowly going into debt with her director/husband.  She made this "Monte Carlo" dress from a pattern.  This picture doesn't do it justice and does not include the shoulder wrap which her character used to hide her mischievous activities.  She won the challenge and received all of Rothschild's estate.  Needless to say, she and her director husband are happy to have their fortune restored.

This is Adriana Derosea, wife of a wealthy and powerful shiping magnate who kept her locked up inside their Spanish Mansion.  She was trying to win the Rothschild Estate so she could divorce (perhaps even kill) her adulterous husband and live a life of luxury without him.  Alas she arrived to the party late and Phyllis had nearly all but won the estate at that point.

She is Vela Anastasia Romanovs, or at least claims to be.  She was after the 5 million dollars so she could stay afloat in the aristocratic circles and find herself a suitor suitable of a Tsar's daughter.  Truth-in-point, she was a liar and was unable to win the money.

Ah, the notorious opium dealer Ming Lo Po.  She was perfect.  My wife and I helped her sew the costume from a pattern.  I found the hat she's wearing at Claire's for like 4 bucks while I was looking for cheapo period sunglasses.  She succeeded in winning money and getting high.  Notorious.  Actually, Marcus found the golden idol she needed to retreive the money and, since Madame Voltz was eaten by Cerberus, gave the idol to Po on the condition that she return the idol to him so that it may be properly documented and placed on display in a museum.  She made good on her part of the agreement and used the money to buy her way to the top of her family's patriarchic opium trading company.

Those are all of the pictures, and I hope to post more of more recent LARPing events my friends and I have done.  If you have any questions, please comment with them.

Fredericksberg is not entirely too far from the DC area. We have a lot of larps and larpers in that area. Alas, I've just stopped running my campaign, and the closest one we all play in is usually in Pennsylvania (that's right, we live in VA and larp in PA).

All of the people who played in the above LARP live in the Northern VA area, but the location of that LARP was the organizer's parent's house who live in Fredericksburg.

Yeah, we know a couple of people who travel to and from Pennsylvania for games. You people are dedicated!

Dedicated. Yeah, that's the word...

If you are interested in more larps in the area, your best bet might be the larpa-gen mailing list larpa-gen@yahoogroups.com. That's also a good way to find players in the area, if you ever want more players for your larps.

Just saying, 'cause I like to get local larpers talking to each other and all.

Now that looks fun. I've always wanted to do something smaller like that. Costumes all look good too and the character concepts are all great.

V. nice! Love the look and feel of it all... we've recently written and performed an in-character play that had similar themes and costumes, which was a nice change from both mundanewear and my usual armor-adventures.

A smaller group of friends running a LARP (at least in my experience), results in great costumes and a rather intimate experience. Yes, it was a great change of pace from our modern supernatural LARP and the fantasy themed one we run.

I'm also a big advocate of those (see my previous posts for examples), especially for people who get a bit too involved in network games OOC drama!

Yeah, most of us left a bigger LARP called Avalon (www.avalon-larp.com) and have continued roleplaying in smaller venues created by ourselves minus the drama of personal issues that seem never ending.

We're trying to put together a Victorian LARP with a similar feel as this one at some point this summer. The idea is to have a story based on a secret magical society with three different chapters/locations/meals.

The three chapters are:

Brunch on the Verenda - Which will take place in my parent's back yard and deck in Manassas. There will be croquet, brunch, and intimate conversation. (pictures will be taken IMMEDIATELY when people arrive)

Picnic by the River - Which will take place at some state park in Fredericksburg where we can rent canoes and start backstabbing the other players socialy...perhaps even physically.

Brandy in the Parlour - Which will take place at the Fredericksburg house, again. There will be a large expanse of space out of doors, with a sitting room, a billiards room, and an opium den. This is where all of the final havoc will ensue, I believe.

Excellent ideas all around!

I've been thinking of doing some LARP-on-a-lake ever since I heard about SF Goth Naval Battle.

A different group of friends and I organize a squirt gun capture the flag style game at the Ben Lomond Park in Manassas, which is usually enjoyable.

Those pictures are great! My wife and I haven't made our costumes, yet, but I hope we look as half as good as some of those players! We've purchased most of the fabric, but there is still a lot of work to do.
