LARP.COM Mail Migration: Completed 6/15 - 6pmEST
Hello all! This quick note is just to let everyone know that all of the @larp.com Email addresses should now be migrated to Gmail. (Though there is still some overflow coming into Hermes) I moved over everyone who either responded to my query "Do you want me to move your account" or had logged into their account since Jan 1, 2009 - so I tried to account for 99% of all currently active accounts (since there were over 140 accounts, many of which were never used.) So if you are wondering "Why is my E-mail account missing?" or think that you should have been migrated - please drop me a line at: webmaster@larp.com ---------- If you want to access the new @larp.com Webmail interface, here's a quick overview: 1. You will use: http://webmail.larp.com to access your E-mail, but the interface will change. (Those of you who have your E-mail address forwarded, you should be set up the same way, so no change there - but a backup copy will be available on the mail server.) 2. Google is now handling all anti-spam functions, so just check the "Spam" folder. 3. You will still be able to access your mail through POP or IMAP, and a backup copy is kept on the server in case your hard drive crashes killing all your E-mail. 4. For outgoing mail, you can now use "smtp.google.com" and "Authenticate" prior to sending mail. As always, if you have any questions, please let the webmasters know: webmaster@larp.com Thanks! | | Saturday, June 13th, 2009 | 12:22 pm [pickmansraven]

LARP.COM Mail migration: Update 6/13/2009
Just a quick update to everyone - Every user should have already received an E-mail from me at your @larp.com address regarding your E-mail account. I sent them out to confirm the folks I am moving, and requesting that if you want to move (or no longer use your account), then to let me know. If you have not seen this E-mail then contact me IMMEDIATELY at: webmaster@larp.com I have created all the user accounts over on the Google Apps/Mail service, and have started the migration. I will be flipping the switch, and shunting all the E-mail deliveries to the new Google Apps service on Sunday. Additionally, I am trying to make certain that all of your mail is copied over to the new Service, but just in case - please download all the mail you want from your account. (I will keep a backup of the mail for a little while, as I migrate all the other domains to Google Apps too.) You can manually request that your mail get moved over to the new server, and I will be sending instructions on how to do that in an E-mail tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any questions! Mail server migration: Update - 5/28
Well, as you can probably tell, the mail server migration is still in the PLANNING stage. As it turns out, Google (after Jan 9, 2009) changed how they handle new requests for domain hosting, and have now limited their "Free" hosting to just 50 user accounts. What this means is that I have to go through all 154 current E-mail accounts and determine if there are ones I can get rid of if we want to migrate to Google. ON THE OTHER HAND - Microsoft is offering a competing solution, through their "Windows Live Domain" E-mail hosting solution - and THEY allow up to 500 accounts. However, it means that instead of Gmail, it's a Windows Live mail (formerly Hotmail) account. Honestly - they're really the SAME - and Windows Live now offers (as of March 9th) POP3 access to all of its subscribers. So I'm going to throw this question out (to anyone reading) - Which would be preferable: Gmail (but having to trim and limit accounts) or Windows Live Mail, being that they're both essentially the same? State of the Server: May 18, 2009
Hi everyone! It's been a while since I've done one of these, so I figured I'd give y'all a quick status update on what's going on! Juno:Juno, our webserver, has been seeing her usage increase, but has been running like a top. I'm installing some new packages on there for folks, but overall her health is good. She's taken on the load from Hera, our recently retired Webserver, and hopefully everyone's been experiencing a good run with her. And now for the BIG news ... Mail Server Migration:Okay, I've been working on this for a while, but I think it's time to finally make this move. As the version of Fedora Core that I'm running on Hermes is now "out of maintenance", I have three choices: Force upgrade the box to the latest version of Fedora Core (offline for a day, possibly more depending on package dependencies); Mass migration to Ubuntu or another Linux distro (offline for at LEAST a day, possibly the better part of a weekend); or migrate all my mail to an offsite-hosted solution (minimal/no downtime). Based upon the time required, and ease of use, I've elected to choose option #3 - migrate all mail to an offsite-hosted solution. This will give me the ability to more easily maintain the Mail, faster servers, better uptime, better integrated anti-spam, and ease of use. After evaluating them for over a year, I've chosen to move to the Google Apps free hosting solution. So, what does this mean? 1. Everyone will be able to keep their existing @larp.com account. 2. If you host your mail through us, I'll be moving your domain too and sending you instructions on how to administer it. 3. All your existing mail will be migrated to the new google-hosted solution. 4. Just like Gmail, you will have 25 GB of email storage space 5. 99.9% up-time guarantee 6. Integration with Google's other apps, such as Calendar, Documents, etc. The upside is that NOTHING should change on your side to check your mail. You'll still use mail.larp.com as your POP and SMTP server, and can use http://mail.larp.com (or http://webmail.larp.com) for your web-based E-mail. It will just look a little different. :) I am currently targeting the migration to take place THIS weekend, and have the larp.com domain shifted over by Monday, May 25th - the other domains will be shifting over slowly as well, but if I can make it go fast, I will have everyone migrated by May 31st. As always, if you have any questions, please drop us a line at: webmaster@larp.com Thanks! LARP down?
Anyone having connection issues to LARP this morning? | | Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 | 6:09 pm [dareff]

Email Issues?
Anyone else having email problems (with their larp based account)? Getting my emails have been delayed by hours (in some cases), and a few people have told me their emails to me have bounced -- not sure if they really bounced, or if they got a delay/retry message. | | Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 | 9:55 am [pickmansraven]

System restored: 9:55am
Good morning all, I was just informed that there was a 7-hour power outage yesterday at the co-lo facility, and upon automatic reboot, the system didn't complete all its self-testing. The system should be restored and everyone back online. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience. | | Monday, April 13th, 2009 | 9:56 pm [pickmansraven]

System down: 9:55pm
Good evening everyone, For some reason, the webserver is currently non-responsive. I am not sure of the reason, but won't be able to have anyone get into the server closet until the morning. I apologize for the inconvenience, but as soon as I know what's going on, I will let everyone know. Please excuse the interruption. | | Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 | 10:23 am [hemlock]

Tiny interruption
Some of you may have experienced a slight period of website unavailability this morning, as the webserver had an unexpected error. The problem has now been resolved, and your sites should be available at this time. We will be looking into some process monitoring solutions to ensure we catch faults like these sooner in the future. | | Friday, January 2nd, 2009 | 4:55 pm [pickmansraven]

Migration Update: 1/2/2009 - COMPLETE
I have Good News everybody! (spoken in my best Professor Farnsworth voice) The Migration is COMPLETED! All data should now be on the new server, Juno. (I completed the migration at about 11pm last night) *However* - In the interest of "Winter Cleaning" I tried to identify unused accounts ... So any account that either wasn't linked off the main page, or hadn't been used in several years, were not copied over. But I *DID* keep everyone's data backed up on the old hard Drive, and can easily restore anyone's site pretty quickly. Please let me know if you (or anyone you know) is missing data, missing a site, missing a database, or just generally missing something that should be there. Otherwise, we should be back to normal. Or at least working fashion. :) Let me know if you have any questions, problems, or issues. Cheers! Migration update: 12/30 at 12:30am
Well - I got all the DOMAINS up and running, that just leaves the bulk of the other non-domain user accounts left. I'll work on those tomorrow and try to get them done ASAP. (I'll probably do what I did today, and chunk up the work so I get a batch online at a time.) I should be completed with this by tomorrow night, just in time to sleep before New Years Eve. :) So if we're hosting your Domain, and it's not up/working let me know ASAP at: webmaster@larp.com Good night! | | Monday, December 29th, 2008 | 1:37 pm [pickmansraven]

Migration update: 12/29 at 1:30pm
The best laid plans ... often go awry. I haven't completed the migration due to the intrusion of Real Life, Work, and the Holidays forming a "Perfect Storm" of other, high priority items, that took precedence. However, I am spending the entire day today activating all websites of hosted domains, and then activating all the http://www.larp.com/website accounts. Without interruption, I should be completed by midnight tonight, so that's my goal. As soon as everything is done and the switch is flipped, I'll post a note here. ------------------------- As an aside - if you want to move your http://www.larp.com/website account to a http:// website.larp.com account, let me know ASAP. Migration update: 12/19 at 10:30pm
Okay - so you'll notice that the "Emergency Maintenance" page is still up, and I bet you're wondering why. Well, my apologies - I've been absolutely slammed in real life and haven't had time to start moving more than a few folks over and flip the switch for them. Here's my plan for this weekend: 12/19 (tonight): Move as many domains over from the attached backup drive as possible and turn them on before I collapse from lack of sleep/energy. 12/20 (Sat): Spend early Christmas with Family and then finish the domains, plus migrate as many of the Users as I can get to. 12/21 (Sun): Finish with the users and then flip the main LARP.COM page back on. Again, my apologies this is taking so long - there are over 300 user accounts I have to move and set up, new passwords to track, and cull out the sites that are no longer active. Please let me know if you need your site up ASAP, so I can move you to the top of the queue.Off to the migration mines! Migration update: 12/17 at 10:15pm
I'm still migrating domains over FIRST and then the main LARP.COM accounts. (I hope to have all the active virtual domains up tonight, with the user accounts up tomorrow) As always, if you have a pressing need to have your domain/account up ASAP, drop me an E-mail and I can promote your request to the top of the queue. Still chugging through all the user accounts and databases.... Current Mood: working | | Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 | 8:08 pm [pickmansraven]

HERA Update: 8:08pm EST
There's good news and bad news. The bad news first: R.I.P. Hera - you were a good server, that served loyally for many years, but now you have passed on. The good news: I was able to save all of the user data located in your home directories. I even might be able to recover the DATABASES too! However, this emergency migration will have to take place over the course of the next 24 hours. I'll be taking the system drive home with me to recover the database information, but migrating over everyones Home directory tonight and setting up new passwords. Ergo: Everyone will be migrated to Juno by Thursday. As always, if you have any questions, drop me an E-mail at: webmaster@larp.com My apologies for the inconvenience - I'm working as fast as I can (in between my day job) to move everyone's domains over and get everything set up again. Hera Update; 11:10am EST
I have an update on Hera's status. According to the wonderful folks down at our co-lo, Hera's had a power supply failure. :( (She is an old girl, having been in service for over 4 years now) They're going to try to swap out her power supply to save her, but if that doesn't work, I will need to plan to do an emergency hard drive swap and move everyone's data over to Juno and "Flip the Switch". This would be done on a fairly aggressive timeline (probably over the next day or two) to get the data across, and get Juno up and running. Also - since the Power Supply died there is a *CHANCE* of data loss. As soon as I can get access to her hard drives, I will attempt to see if there's anything wrong with the data and migrate everyone over ASAP. Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers! Hera (Main webserver) is down
Good morning all, Some time last night, Hera (the primary/older) webserver crashed. I haven't had a chance to go down to our Co-Location site to find out what happened, but I do have a request in to them to have someone look at it. As of right now, if I need to go physically to the server and check it out, that won't happen until after 6pm EST today. (I'm hoping it won't be necessary) Those of you who have had your domains moved to JUNO, the new webserver, are not affected. As soon as I know more, I will let everyone know. Cheers!
