| Excellence in the East |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|10:42 am] |
Just wanted to share some positive experiences I had around town recently:
1. MSU Salvage Yard. I often forget this great source of computers, bikes and desks is available. I got a great giant steel desk for 25 bucks. The staff was friendly and efficient, in fact they even took care of the parking ticket I got while parked there to pick up my desk (Tip: the lot closest to Harrison is not the same as the Salvage-yard parking lot, they're farther back).
2. Just a little farther East on Grand River I discovered Massage and Wellness. Now I would consider most massage places about equal, but Massage and Wellness charges quite a bit less than most places: $50 for an hour massage, and only $40 if you're a student. http://www.massageandwellnessonline.com/
3. And then toward the Eastern edge of Lansing Metro, I recently tried a new sushi restaurant: Maru. Freshest tasting sushi I've ever had, and they have great half-off rolls during their happy hour. My date had considered San Su to be the best sushi around the area, but has converted to Maru.
I have no affiliation or connection to any of above places, just sharing places that gave good service/products. |

| Complete Streets update |
[Jul. 7th, 2009|07:30 pm] |
For those of you who are not a part of their Facebook group, this was posted:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have collected 5,000 signatures over the past 8 weeks to make Lansing safer for people who are walking, bicycling, in wheelchairs, using walkers, using the bus…. kids walking to school, etc. And we only achieved this enormous and challenging goal because YOU helped!!!!
The signatures are going to our City Clerk’s office on Friday morning (July 10). If you still have petitions with signatures PLEASE GET THEM TO ME TODAY OR TOMORROW. Right now we have verified 4717 “good” signatures. I have 28 sheets (336 signatures) that I’ll be giving to Jason Harder to review later this morning. Because I know they won’t all be “good”, and we certainly want a buffer, I still want to get any additional signatures that have been collected and not handed in. To be clear, we need 4100 valid signatures to get this on the ballot; but the Clerk’s office verifies more strictly than we do, because they check the actual signature against the signature in the voter file. We have only been making sure that people who signed are indeed registered to vote in Lansing. So PLEASE get petitions to me right away, by dropping them off at my house at 815 Bancroft Court, or telling me when and where I can pick them up from you.
It’s important for you to realize that the Lansing Complete Streets Ordinance is one of the most “implementable” ordinances to make a city walk and bike friendly in the nation. By that I mean that many other cities have been passing resolutions of support---- which is basically just a statement of values with no teeth or requirements for implementation.
The Lansing Complete Streets Ordinance actually requires Lansing to have a non-motorized network plan and to update it every 5 years. Because it actually requires a policy change, we should see real changes to how Lansing looks, feels, and functions as a result of this ordinance. The development of the plan is already underway, thanks to the 200 people who participated in the planning sessions in early March. The summary of those sessions and an online comment form is available at www.walkbikelansing.com/designnetwork
Our local ordinance is also stirring and encouraging efforts at the state level to implement Complete Streets Policies, such as the Complete Streets Funding Bill passed by the House Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee on June 18. (more on that at http://www.lmb.org/pages/news/BikeShorts/current_events.htm)
We still need your help to make sure the ordinance passes. The BEST way to do this is for each of us, and all of our friends, to contact the Lansing City Council members and URGE them to pass this ordinance. Once the Clerk gets the petitions, they have 15 days to review the signatures (July 10-July 25), and then the proposal will go on the next City Council agenda (July 27 or August 3).
The contact information for all council members is available online at http://www.midmeac.org/lansingcouncil.
Please contact ALL council members TODAY and let them know why this is so important to you and for others in our community.
You can also send letters to the editor of our local papers, which raises awarness and public understanding of the issues: http://www.walkbikelansing.com/Advocate.html
Be sure to mention the Complete Streets Ordinance in your communications.
AND LET’S NOT FORGET TO CELEBRATE THIS HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!!!
VOLUNTEER CELEBRATION, OPPORTUNITY TO DONATE TO THE CAUSE, AND SMART COMMUTE AWARDS CEREMONY WILL BE ON TUESDAY, JULY 21 AT CLARK HILL IN OLD TOWN (212 E. GRAND RIVER), 5ish-7ish.
THANK YOU for being part of this ground-breaking effort to make Lansing safer for walkers, bicyclists, transit users, people with disabilities, kids walking to school, and everyone else who will benefit from a walk and bike friendly city.
The time and effort you have committed to this cause will improve so many peoples’ lives--- we just need to keep the movement building by contacting city council members to make sure they pass this resolution!!!! (And if they don’t, it will go on the ballot in November, and we will need A LOT more help with voter education from August – November)

| Fireworks |
[Jun. 30th, 2009|09:08 am] |
Would anyone care to share a good place to watch the fireworks, without getting anywhere near the riverside park/LCC area? It's a giant mess of orange barrels down there, and I'd like to avoid it. Alternatively, any awesome fireworks going on outside of the city show?
Thank you! |

| Walk and Bike Lansing! |
[Jun. 25th, 2009|08:50 pm] |
A couple weeks ago a gentleman came to my door asking me to sign a petition that would, in a nutshell, require Lansing to gradually make roads walk/bike friendly. I declined because I was initially concerned about how this would be paid for. As a guy who loves his bike, I am ALL for this but not at the expense of more important things. If this would take away from needed city services then it shouldn't happen just yet.
I just watched a presentation given by the Lansing Walking & Bicycling Task Force and decided to support the proposed ordinance. They made a good case for its existence and are only asking for the amount budgeted for non-motorized transport work to be increased by ~2% (from money given to the city by the state for transportation work).
As of June 10th they had until July 1st to collect 2,000 needed signatures. From their Facebook page it looks like they are getting there and I want to encourage you to sign your name and support it as well. Keep in mind this is a petition to put it on a ballot only, it still needs to be voted on.

Woohoo! There is a Syphilis Outbreak happening in Ingham County. Best to start double wrapping it. A 300 percent increase in the number of Syphilis cases in Ingham County this year has caused alarm among public health workers... |

| Lansing Area Doctors? |
[Jun. 23rd, 2009|01:56 pm] |
Hi there :) I've only been in the Lansing area for a short period of time and I just NOW got my health insurance back... now the time has come for me to choose a doctor! I was wondering if anyone in this community has ever heard of Dr. Lisa Dietz or Dr. Babar Ahmad and has an opinion to share?
I initially filled out Dr. Dietz on my Blue Care Network form, but for some reason (even though she's accepting new patients) BCN seems to have bypassed that and automatically assigned me to Dr. Ahmad. I've looked online to try and find reviews of both doctors and didn't find anything... for Babar I kept finding the cartoon elephant (LOL) and for Lisa I only found one review and it was from some unhappy obsese woman.
Basically I'd like to know if anyone in the area knows anything about either one of these doctors before I make up my mind. I'm also open to hearing about other doctors that take Blue Care Network, whether it's a "go here" or a "don't go here."
Thanks! :)

| attention capitol area poets: |
[Jun. 16th, 2009|06:46 pm] |
I moved back here about a year ago, and there's one thing I've noticed that's still pretty unchanged...there really doesn't seem to be anything resembling a community of poets.
If you're any combination of the following:
a poet a fan of poets a fan of poetry
and interested in creating a writers group for writers of poetry, let's see about getting a writers group and/or semi-regular open mic thing off the ground.

Picture printing question:
I want to print a photo to be 9x13 but I see online that the Walgreens and Walmarts of the world stop at 8x10. I was going to stop into Lansing Photo on Saginaw near Meijer but their website says that they're closed.
Any other photo places come to mind? |

| Substance Abuse therapy. |
[Jun. 5th, 2009|02:25 pm] |
Hi.
I'm wondering if anyone here could recommend some therapy for substance abuse in the Lansing area. The catch is, I'm beyond broke and don't have insurance. I'd like to get into perhaps a group therapy intensive outpatient program, or at least find someone to talk to about other options. I tried going to CMH, but they turned me away because I wasn't suicidal... which was quite perplexing. I would truly appreciate any recommendations. |

| places to live? |
[May. 28th, 2009|06:20 pm] |
My boyfriend and I are looking for a place to move to at the end of July, anyone have any suggestions of good areas/good complexes? If you have had a bad experience let me know because I want to avoid crappy landlords/neighbors.
We're looking for a 1 bedroom because we want to keep the price down. I go to State and we both work in East Lansing so some place not too far from there (Lansing, Haslett, etc.) would be nice. I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford or want to be around a bunch of loud students in E Lansing. |

| Seeking an incredibly patient ASL tutor |
[May. 21st, 2009|05:52 pm] |
I'm enrolled in an Introduction to Deaf Culture and ASL class this summer at MSU and am looking for a tutor. I have a learning disability and things don't always register right in my head so ff you've worked with LD students before, it would be a huge plus. If not I need someone who is very patient and understanding. I'd be looking for help with basic sign and fingerspelling once a week for two hours. I'd need six weeks of sessions and am willing to negotiate prices. My schedule is very open, so if you have a busy one it shouldn't be a problem.
If you are interested please email me your credentials, preferred method of contact, and what you feel is a reasonable price, and I will get back to you. I can be reached at callingamy@livejournal.com
Thank you! |

| Shoes in Extended Sizes |
[May. 12th, 2009|06:41 pm] |

Anyone in the area know where to find cute shoes in size 11 and up? Wide sizes are even better. I'm going to a wedding next month and want to get some great new shoes but am having trouble finding any in my size and would like to find recommendations before I drive all over town. DSW definitely has no dress shoes in my size. I am not concerned about price at this point. |

I'm partial to average length, parted to a side sorta simple deal. To be unsuspected is key. Any barber/stylist/follicle resizing technician recommendations? |
