| Now that AC is over, I'll give the time honored question:
Who's gunna be there? :)
(July 18, Madison Meadows, game time @ 2 PM..practice starts at Noon) | comments: 19 comments or Leave a comment |
| Had a great time at the game and picnic yesterday! Weather was awesome, and the food delicious - thanks so much to our awesome cooks/planners ( duncandahusky and takaza ) for all they did to make this event amazing!
I've put online the couple of photos I took

| I drove up to Pleasant Prairie this morning to check the fields after last night's torrential downpours ( hazardous_roo did the same - we missed each other by an hour and a half, I'd guess :-)
The infields are surprisingly dry but for a few puddles (they're mostly densely-packed sandy dirt). the outfields are wet but playable. With the sun and light breeze, I expect things will dry out even more by this afternoon. Stevie mentioned that the groundskeepers will most likely groom the fields, though there is another group that will be using them prior to us.
Some traffic notes: Contrary to earlier reports from the WIDOT website, if you are coming from Illinois, the exit to WI-165 is open. The exit back toward Illinois, though, is closed. There are posted detour signs that will take you up to the exit about a mile north - no big deal. I have updated the LAFF Softball/MFF Summer Picnic map to show the detour: http://bit.ly/fWbqn
Coming from Wisconsin and points north, the exit to WI-165 is closed. The detour is to take the Wilmot Road/Highway C exit just north of WI-165 and follow the frontage road to WI-165. Detours are posted, and I have also updated the map: http://bit.ly/fWbqn
On I-94 Westbound, there is no construction north of Grand Ave. in Illinois (yay!) but the left lane is closed starting at the Wisconsin state line (boo!). Note that Wisconsin State Troopers are HEAVILY patrolling the construction areas - obey the speed limits! | comments: Leave a comment |
| | Quick question: Would I be able to hitch a ride with someone on Saturday? While I am perfectly capable of taking the Metra up, I'd rather not if someone else local is heading that way. Leave me a note here if you'd be willing to help. Thanks. | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| (x-posted in various places)
With the close of RSVPs nine hours ago, the final headcount for the game is 48 players, with 4 extra players in the possibles. The total number of fans for the game came out to 63 names, with 10 others also possibly attending. As no one has specifically said that they had other dining plans, this makes the total picnic attendance at 125 furries and friends!
As noted by one of the catering canids in the previous post, the game will start promptly at 2pm. Since we have both ballfields for only 4 hours, if you show up late, you won't play. PERIOD. The gathering time of 1pm for practice is highly recommended, as the team captains will want to get everyone together and situated properly. Speaking of captains, due to the large number of signups we will be having four teams total which will be listed at the end of this post.
Also noted from a comment by a helpful Wisconsin resident, the exit ramp from northbound I-94 West to SR-165 is supposed to be closed for construction. However, an updated report as well as official directions from the state's transportation website shows that the southbound I-94 East exit ramp to SR-165 will be the one closed for the game. In any case, the aforementioned catering canid has provided the following detour map for all attendees should one need to utilize an alternate route to the game and picnic site.
As of this post, the four weather websites that I visit frequently have ruled out rain in favor of mostly cloudy skies with a 15% chance of precipitation. Temperatures will be in the high 70s, and it will be humid, so don't forget your bug repellent... just keep away from the food while applying it. And while clouds are nature's sunscreen, having extra sunblock never hurts.

I hope you're all excited, cuz I sure am! | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| My, my look at the time!
The June LAFF Softball Game and Midwest FurFest Summer Picnic are just a few days away on Saturday, June 20. All of the fun will be at Prairie Springs Park in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin (just north of the IL/WI border). Here are the picnic shelter and ball fields we'll be using. You can find all the details about the softball game here; folks can gather for practice at 1 PM, and the game starts at 2 PM sharp. The Midwest FurFest Summer Picnic will start at approximately 6 PM, right after the final softball game.
What's on the menu for the picnic, you ask? Steak. Specifically, New York strip steak (or chicken breast, for those who don't eat red meat) grilled on site, homemade redskin potato salad, mixed greens salad, banana pudding, and a variety of homemade cookies. We'll have water, Gatorade, and an interesting selection of local sodas. Additionally, we'll have various snacks throughout the day. Best of all, it's all free courtesy of your hometown furry convention, Midwest FurFest!
We have ulterior motives, of course :-) Midwest FurFest exists because of volunteers, and new volunteers and staff are always needed to keep the convention thriving. If you have any questions about the convention, if you're interested in volunteering, or you just want to learn how it all comes together, feel free to ask any of the folks with a Midwest FurFest nametag and they'll be happy to help you out.
Now here's the important bit: RSVPS ARE DUE BY NOON ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17! If you don't get your RSVP in by then, we can't guarantee we'll have food for you! (though we will try to accommodate everyone we can).
How do you RSVP for the softball game and/or the picnic? Do you comment on this post? NO! Do you send an email? NO! You must submit your RSVP here. Any other method of response will be cheerfully ignored. (Please state if you'll be attending the game and/or the picnic when you RSVP, and remember that an RSVP stating that you "might" be there is not an RSVP because we "might" have a steak for you...or we might not :-) If Mother Nature deems it impossible to play, we will head east to The Jelly Belly Factory and take their tour. In the event of bad weather, and an announcement will be made to the LAFF list and LJ communities regarding the status of the picnic on Saturday morning.
See everyone on Saturday! | comments: Leave a comment |

| Just in time for the 1st WI. LAFF softball game we have this: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-wisconsin-bottleneckmay09,0,7251971.story
".......Starting right after Memorial Day, Chicagoans driving into Wisconsin to shop in Kenosha, fest-out in Milwaukee or chill-out in Door County should plan for the worst: the big cheese of road projects.
The official start of summer means the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's $1.9 billion program to widen and improve Interstate Highway 94 -- the largest road project in state history -- will be running at full speed.
As workers add a fourth lane in each direction from the state line 35 miles north to Milwaukee, I-94 in Kenosha County will turn into a choke point, dropping from three to two lanes in both directions.
Although work officially kicked off in March, mainly near Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport, Illinoisans will start to feel the pinch during the last week of May just when they begin escaping for vacations and weekend getaways.........
The department has created a Web page devoted to the project, www.plan94.org, and intends to post real-time travel information and a trip-planner so motorists can minimize the hassles, Grisar said.............."
Fun times ahead for anyone going to or coming form the North. Also this form that article:
"...The project will mean an upheaval for one of the oldest, most recognizable businesses along the interstate: the Mars Cheese Castle. The Kenosha specialty cheese shop with the iconic sign has long been an attraction for visitors coming from south of the border.
Widening I-94 will force the company to tear down its store, a monument to cheese, sausage and kitsch, and rebuild it about 100 feet farther from the highway. Owner Mario Ventura Jr. is unfazed by that daunting prospect, however, and thinks business will ultimately improve." | comments: 10 comments or Leave a comment |
| Here's another reminder to folks that haven't already done so to RSVP for the June Softball Game and MFF Summer Picnic. Current attendance lists and RSVP areas are here, while the schedule for the rest of the games of the year can be found here. Here's hoping this weekend is a lot of fun for all!

| | I have a question about softball on saturday. Seeing as it's rained almost non-stop since monday, what happens if the fields are unplayable or if it rains on saturday? | comments: 10 comments or Leave a comment |
| Because I'm retarded in that special, Peter Griffin kind of way, I've decided to make the trip from Columbus, Ohio to Chicago for the softball game this weekend. I will be leaving after work on Friday and then heading back probably mid-day Sunday. If there is anyone that is conveniently located between Columbus and Chicago that needs a ride, let me know.
Otherwise, hope to see you there! | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| Or more like early update.
This is your official 2 week notice....its time to start LAFFBall again! Gameday is May 2 @ 2 PM, but be there for practice at Noon if you'd like. Same place as ususal: Madison Meadows in Lombard.
So...who's gunna be there to play? | comments: 21 comments or Leave a comment |
| Just had to remind folks that haven't already done so to RSVP for the June Softball Game and MFF Summer Picnic. Current attendance lists and RSVP areas are here, while the schedule for the rest of the games of the year can be found here. Here's hoping for a great season!

| And the dates are:
May 2 June 20 At Pleassant Prairie Park, Wisc. See here: http://community.livejournal.com/laffsoftball/41258.html July 18 Aug. 15 Sept. 12 Oct. 3
There won't be a game in April this year, due to FCN taking place on the last weekend of the month. And any earlier is just temping the fate of the weather. Heck, my league starts mid-April and we don't normally get games in til May starts.
For the games (except June's game) we'll be at Madison Meadows in Lombard; this is where we've been playing for the last few years. We will use which ever North field is open for us (by the parking lot), under the trees again if ithe fields are wet. However, we'll more than likely have to use the Western fields for at least the Sept and Oct games, due to Peewee football on the usual fields (possibly the Aug game as well).
The dates selected have nothing to conflict with them as of Feb 22. We also have the option of having rain dates. If it is raining on the scheduled date, we -MAY- have a makeup game the weekend after that date.Except for the June game. Rain dates will again depend upon the weather of course.
So, you have an extra month to find your mitts and bats, and we'll see you in May! | comments: 6 comments or Leave a comment |
| Comment here to be added to either the player roster or the cheering section! And if you just wanna picnic, you're considered one of the fans anyway. :)

| Thanks to everyone for coming out to play, watch or otherwise support our fun in the Sun (or rain, as much of this year was wet :P) The game in Mich turned into a nice trip of adapting to conditions, as were a couple of the local games. Next year, we'll have (hopefully) more sun for our games. And it looks like the "Foreign Soil" game will be in Wisconsin...anyone need a Jelly Belly fix? *hint hint*
Many more thanks go to steviemaxwell; without him we would have no bookkeeping, umpires, captains...etc. He did all the work...all I did was pick the dates with Exile.
Even more thanks to exile17, for only showing up at one game, thus keeping his motor mouth and pink Cubs visor away from us XD XD
One point of drama stoppage tho. If people keep whining about who gets the game ball or any other award, we'll simply stop doing them. They are fun awards, not something to play for (in fact, most of the time people playing for them don't get them). So, let's all play for fun and friendship, and not try to prove who's peenie is bigger than the others' (we all know it's woodychitwn's anyway XD).
See ya all in 2009! Dates will be announced in Feb or early March more than likely...just like this year. | comments: 14 comments or Leave a comment |

| With steviemaxwell saying he'd host a second game on the 11th for birthdays and rainout possibility, I'm going to move the game up a week. Of course, that isn't saying we won't get rained out again :P, but at least the prospects are a bit better for good weather.
That, and most of the respondents said the 4th would be better anyway.
So...usual time (practice @ noon, game @ 2)...West side field area. | comments: 9 comments or Leave a comment |
