RJC: STAND UP TAKE ACTION AGAINST POVERTY & INEQUALITY

After Stand Up in RGS (2007), we come back BIGGER AND BETTER.

Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty
What is Stand Up Take Action Against Poverty & Inequality?
in 2000, leaders around the world signed the Millennium Declaration, a global effort to halve poverty by 2015. IT IS 2007 NOW AND THE GOAL SEEMS FAR FROM BEING REACHED. Every day, more than 50 000 people die due to preventable causes: and we, the FIRST GENERATION, can push for better aid, debt cancellation, fair trade and equality!
On 17th October 2008, RAFFLES JUNIOR COLLEGE will be STANDING UP AND TAKING ACTION AGAINST POVERTY by taking a pledge and improving their awareness on such issues. As this is an international event, this will receive extensive media coverage! Everyone (teachers too!) will have the chance to wear white wristbands / strings, and go crazy & passionate on that day! YAAAY!
Events & Fringe Activities @ RJC
The main event will comprise of students Standing Up - if you are willing, of course - and reciting the pledge to pressure governments worldwide into meeting the Millennium Development Goals.
Other than this main event, there will be many fringe activities taking place in the school that you can participate in. These include:
1. Coalition of Aid Fair - where various NGOs and aid organisations such as WorldVision, RefugeeSEA, AIESEC, Action for Aids and HOPE Foundation will set up informative booths/displays for you to take further action in the fight against poverty!

2. Sales booth - Purchase white wristbands fro MakePovertyHistory, badges with the official SUTA logos 2008, and comfortable dri-fit T-shirts to show your support for the cause!

3. Banner handprinting / chalk murals - Make your impression by handprinting on various banners reading messages like "Make Poverty History", "RJC Stands Up", "Stand Up!" etc. AND paint chalk murals with similar messages!

4. Net for Nets - Chill out with your friends through a game of ping-pong, and at the same time, help buy mosquito nets for children in malaria-infested countries!

5. The Sanitation Project - It takes only USD$150 to buy enough cement to build a sanitation unit for a co-ed school in India. Through pledging and aid, we can help provide clean sanitation to Third World nations!

6. The Rice Drive - As an individual, class or SIG, donate some rice into the huge RJC collection sack, and help feed abused migrant workers resting in the H.O.M.E. shelter in Singapore!

7. Oh, Say That Thing! - An open mic event where you have up to 7 minutes to say all that you wish to regarding the issue of poverty. Perform anything - and we mean anything, speech, song or dance - original or adapted, and let your voice be heard!

8. Movie screenings - Watch movies and documentaries pertaining to humanitarian issues around the world, and learn more about the problems facing the 21st century.
