| | amused | ] | We just had a fire drill. There are a lot more people than I'd expect in the 7 floors (counting the basement) of the Biology Building. And we on the 6th floor would have been dead about 3 times over were it a real fire. The alarms began to sound and flash and all that, and we all just kinda went out into the main hallway and looked at each other for a couple minutes. After that the assistant chair and safety coordinator started shooing us out, not so nicely. We deserved it. After all, if it had been a real fire, shuffling around in the hallway would not have been a good idea. :) |

Last semester, a new grad student rotated through our lab. She was interested in designing a gene expression experiment, but had virtually no molecular biology experience. The prof we work with was busy, but I also think that he didn't realize how much assistance she really needed. So me (the trusty undergrad) ended up giving her a crash course in sub-cloning.
She disappeared after a few weeks and I didn't really think about it until I found out that we have a class together (she's taking a senior-level molecular techniques class (thank god)). I asked her what she was up to and whether or not she would be around this semester. She told me that she decided to work in another lab because ours "didn't have a lot of money."
Maybe I'm being sensitive about it, but I thought this remark was rather offensive. I don't care if you don't want to work in the lab because you don't like the research that's going on, or you don't think you would work well with the group, but to turn down a lab just because of the cashflow (or lack thereof) is rather petty. And I know that she could have joined the lab if she wanted to (one of the students just graduated). It just irks me. And not to mention the fact that I took time out of my schedule to work with her on an experiment that, now, she's no longer interested in.
Has anyone else run across people like this? |
