South Bay - Woodland Hills? [11 Jun 2009|05:58pm]

onespringchkn
Hi everyone!  Hopefully you can help me out.

What would be the best way for me to get from Redondo Beach/Torrance to Pierce College in Woodland Hills via transit?

I'm considering taking classes there this fall, but I'm not sure of my schedule yet. Chances are I'd want to get there around 8 a.m.

Skirball by bus? [03 Apr 2009|11:18am]

_darkvictory
There was a post a while back about getting to the Getty by bus. How about the Skirball? It looks like the 761 bus stops nearby. I'm wondering how the walk is to the entrance?

Because of a bad experience I had (took the bus to an interview in Woodland Hills and had to wait at a bus bench that was more or less under a giant bush) I'm leery of taking transit to hillside locations.

need your help [15 Mar 2009|09:31am]

Hello, it's my first post here and I really need your help. Hopefully, people still read this commutiny despite the lack of posts since November....

The thing is my friend and I will stay in LA for two weeks starting next Thursday. We won't be renting a car and I've already printed all the important bus routes from www.metro.net But I was wondering if it would probably be easier to get to places by underground than by bus? In this case could you tell me the nearest underground stations to the following locations (or give me a link where to look):

Universal Studios
LA Zoo
Beverly Center
The Grove
La Brea Tar Pits

Also, we are planning to go for a walk in Hollywood and Beverly Hills. What are the most convinient stations to exit for that? And to go to Venice Beach?

Probably, you'll also have other suggestions of places to see in LA and how to get there :))) We booked a bus tour to get the general idea of what the city looks like but it would be really nice to explore some places more thorough.

Thanks!

PS: Sorry for mistakes, English is not my native language.

Do I smell a challenge?? [25 Nov 2008|10:38am]

If any of you are familiar with the Chicago El, you might know that every year, CTA employees volunteer their time and money to deck out one of the El trains as the CTA Holiday Train. [info]btripp posted this great picture and description in the [info]chicago_el community:

If you've never had a chance to ride the Santa Train ... the interiors are all decked out, including "funny ads" (and Elf-centric jokes), special upholstery, and "helpers" handing out candy canes! This is an annual volunteer project by the CTA workers, who decorate and run the train on their own time ... which is a nice "gift" for their riders.

Later on, someone comments, "They're never going to do something like this in LA's transit system, I can tell you that, so enjoy it for what it is... ;)"

Okay, so maybe our Metro employees wouldn't do it, but does anyone want to sneak onto one of the light rail trains and decorate a car with me? I can bring the tinsel and get some of those signs made. Let me know if you are interested!

Lost phone! [10 Nov 2008|02:29pm]

I apologize that my first post in this community is to ask for a favor, but I'm desperate.

I left my phone on the 304 Metrolink to San Bernardino. I got off at Claremont.
It's a black samsung messenger with a sliding keyboard.

If you find/found it please hand it to a conductor or any metrolink official at LA Union, it'll get back to me because I've reported it lost.

I know this is a long shot, but on the off chance one of you found it I'd love to get it back.

Hello,

I recently got a court summons and fine on the San Bernardino line because I could not present my ticket (I lost it).

It's $250.00. Is there any kind of appeal I can make to get out of this? It was my first time riding the Metrolink (I only recently moved to Claremont) and I didn't get a receipt.

Local transit activism/volunteering [13 Oct 2008|08:02pm]

dreamingcanyon
Does anyone know of any transit-related organizations that are worth joining? Or if any local transit agencies take interns or volunteers?

I really like transit and would like to do something related to it while I'm still a student, but I'm not sure where to start. Through Google I found the names of a few organizations, but would like to know if anyone has opinions or experiences with specific ones. I tried to go to the Calpirg meeting at UCLA tonight, but their telephone organizer gave me the wrong directions and their website hasn't been updated for a long time, so I ended up spending half an hour walking around campus looking for their location with no success. So I'd like to find a group that is better organized than that.

Public Transit [10 Oct 2008|06:00pm]

Is the only form of transportation for me! I'm glad to find like minded individuals. It isn't easy living in a city as massive as LA and getting by through biking, walking, and the metro.

Metrolink Accident in SFV [13 Sep 2008|01:15pm]

lilusako
There are already many reasons as to why I don't ride the metrolink. I'm not saying that it's not a good way of public transit, but after this reading this article, it makes me worry even more. Not that busses are any more safe while plowing through LA Traffic. This article reminds me how human error is always a possibility and that no matter where you are there is always danger somewhere around you.

Article: http://news.yahoo.com/story//ap/20080913/ap_on_re_us/train_collision

Many condolences to all the effected families. It's a tragedy that something like this has happened and I have a feeling it may cause a bad imprint on trying to revive public transit out here in LA once again.

 RE: Today's 'quake

In all this, anyone know how the subways**, Blue Lines, the Orange Line, and the other rail systems held up? (I missed the 6pm newses..) It was the biggest 'quake to hit since any of these services had been built, and i hope it all scored an A+.

**apart from the Metrolink system,
    which apparently closed down a
few tracks due to either inspections
    or actual damage found.

Walking? [06 Apr 2008|03:45pm]

cagedwriter61
I was perusing through a travel guidebook for LA yesterday and came across a little note that said no one walks there and trying to do so is basically impossible. Now, I know obviously that the transit system is available, but I assume there's some walking involved with it. Is walking really not much of an option?

Is there a way I can take a bus to the Getty Center? My friend & I don't drive and we're planning to take a trip there tomorrow. If it helps I live in the Miracle Mile area. I tried to look on mta.net but apparently there's no way. I am assuming the only way you can get there is by car, but please tell me mta.net is lying to me :(

Taking Long Beach Transit for the first time, [18 Mar 2008|02:31pm]

rogedog92
Currently I live in Compton.

Up to 2 months ago, I lived in the San Fernando Valley, but due to my job assignment with my temp agency ended, I had to moved back down here. I am still seeking employment and in the mean time I will be collecting Unemployment benefits until then.

That being said. I took a trip today to the Long Beach Transit headquarters for a job application as a coach operator.

I have previously been on other municipal bus lines within the county for example, Culver City, Gardena, Torrance, Santa Monica and Foothill but had never been on the Long Beach system, until now.

So I get the 205 going South to the Artesia Blue Line Station where I transfer to the Blue Line and get off @ Anaheim Station. There, I get the Long Beach Line 46 to the LBT Administrative offices.

One thing I noticed is that LBT has next bus information at some of the bus stops, pretty much the same that MTA has on the Orange Line but I have a feeling theirs is more accurate.

Another thing I noticed once inside the bus is that drivers have the option of wearing the standard issued uniform or they can use what look like a Hawaiian shirt.

The standard fee is .90 cents as opposed to the $1.25 for MTA.

Other than those things there was nothing unusual or note worthy except for some of the pictures I took along the way.

San Jose, CA Light Rail. [17 Mar 2008|07:53pm]

rogedog92

Back in 2005 I had the opportunity to go to San Francisco for the first time. I went with a couple of friends from church. I have always wanted to ride the street cars and go to China Town; however, since we went together I was outnumbered and the majority won. Since I myself am self professed transit geek, could not leave being negated the opportunity to ride the transit out there. For financial reasons and the fact that we went on a long Holiday weekend, we had to spend the nights on a hotel in San Jose. On the last day we were there, right before my friends woke up, I got up and walked across the street to the San Jose VTA Light Rail.

All the time when I am in another city, if I have the opportunity I will ride their transit system. It is a shame to go to San Francisco and not being able to ride the Muni bus, the BART train or the street cars; but somehow I felt redeemed being able to ride the train in San Jose and have bowed that experience shall never happen again.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

Transit paradise. [15 Mar 2008|10:12pm]

rogedog92
Seeing that no one has posted here for a while, I will write about my experience today. I used to live in the San Fernando Valley for the last 7 years, however due to some circumstances, I had to move back to the south side. Currently I am in Compton. Any way, today; I had to run an errand to Asuza. I usually take the Red Line, Gold Line and Foothill Transit 187 combo. Today though, I wanted to try something different, so I decided to go an all bus schedule. So I take the 205 to the Artesia Blue Line Station where I transfer to the 260 which takes me all the way to South Pasadena. There I get the Foothill 187 and it drops me off one block off where I needed to go. The total travel time was just about five minutes below three hours.

Along the way I noticed that elderly people really, I mean really like going to the race track.
Also, I had not realized it before (and I do not mean this in any way, shape or form in a negative way, is just an observation) that there is a high Chinese population in Monterey Park.

Moving back south has make me realize there is a lot of things to explore in the bus.

Coming back, I had some one drop me off in Norwalk Green Line Station due to the fact they were on their way to the Cerritos Mall which was really cool. I had not been on the Green Line for a while, so it was nice to ride it again,

I was going to just get off at Rosa Parks and go straight home but decided to might as well make the best of the day and take it to Hawthorne and from there get the 40 to go to South Bay Galleria which I had not been since about nine years ago.

From there I got the Gardena 3 and came back home.

It was indeed a nice day.

P. S. Does any one know where I could get schedule and map information on the Compton Renaissance System???

[10 Mar 2008|12:27am]

cagedwriter61
Hi, there.

My friend and I are thinking about heading out to LA for a few days this summer and since we're not old enough to rent a car (typical age requirement is 25!) and don't want to put the mileage on our own cars, we would probably end up flying and then taking the trains (and/or buses?) around the city. I think we'd stay in or around Hollywood, in a hostel.

Any advice or general comments?

We're in Arizona, so we're aware how ridiculous the Southwest gets in the summertime, although I think LA is probably a little better than Phoenix.... That's probably one of the only things that would suck about using the MTA during the day. I read the post on here regarding safety, which was reassuring, although I always figured it wasn't anything out of the ordinary that common sense can't cure.

SGV to UCLA [29 Feb 2008|12:01pm]

I guess it's hopeless, but I wonder if anyone knows if it's possible to get from eastern San Gabriel Valley to UCLA in under 3 hours on a weekday.
