Theatre!
The theatre looks so good. Really great turnout tonight, which is so fantastic. We got the whole place ship shape and cleaned up. We just need our inspection and we're ready to go. Fingers crossed that everything works out tomorrow. Got the worklights up in the theatre space, which is great - it means we won't have to stumble around in the dark. Everything just works - hot water, bathrooms, greenroom, lobby, stage - it all is done. Fire extinguishers are up. Sprinklers are up. It all WORKS. Just gotta get the paperwork that says so. | 8:11 am [oldgrover]

We will be : 1) Painting the stage area black - yes, our black box theatre will be back to black 2) Painting the lobby doors their second coat of black 3) Installing the canopy cedar ceiling 4) Plumbing and electrical We need to get the first three done and we need significant progress on the fourth. Build hour - tomorrow afternoon!
We had a really productive day today, with a good turnout, but we didn't /quite/ get everything done that we needed to. With our hard deadline of Monday morning, 7am, for sprayfoam prep (because that's when the sprayfoam guys come), we need to do a bit more work tomorrow. We'll be starting at 2:15pm. If you available, come out and help! | | Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 | 5:09 pm [oldgrover]

Hi, all Just so you all know, until everything is painted, we are pretty much going to be running painting nights Monday, Wednesday and Thursday every week. Build Day - This Sunday! Noon!
Hi, all Sorry for the short notice - we were waiting for the stars to align and to make sure of the weather - but there will be a Build Day this Sunday, starting at noon (yes, noon - we need to do some stuff before you guys arrive). Because we're starting at noon, please come having eaten lunch - we've got a ton of work to do in the afternoon. What are we doing? We're finally finishing the walkway - putting in the cement ramps from the sidewalk to the walkway and from the walkway to the entrance to the theatre. This will be very cool to have done! If you can come out and help, please do! Thanks very much! | | Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 | 8:54 pm [oldgrover]

Build Evening TOMORROW NIGHT - 7pm
Hi, all Sorry for the last minute notice, but I just got notice an hour ago that our water main has passed inspection. That means I can get the inspector in very soon, but that means we need to do some quick cleanup in the building tomorrow night. So! Build day tomorrow night (Thursday April 2nd) at 7pm until about 9pm. If you can come out, it'd be greatly appreciated. Please wear clothes you can get dirty, but no other equipment is needed. Thanks! | | Sunday, March 22nd, 2009 | 12:28 pm [oldgrover]

Build Weekend - Next Saturday
Sorry for the late notice, but we will be doing a build day THIS SATURDAY, March 28, at 10am at the 9 Princess St East location. I was hoping that the next build day would be our drywall install day, but we're still being held up by tests and inspections. In the meantime, though, our contractors have come up with a list of things we can do to save some money, so it makes sense for us to get out and do some work once more! As always, I'll provide lunch, so come on out at 10am. Thanks very much (NOTE : the original post had an incorrect date. This is the correct date) | | Saturday, March 14th, 2009 | 5:03 pm [oldgrover]

Build Day Report
A fantastic turnout today - thank you all very much for coming out. We got a huge amount done - a bunch of plumbing, finishing that job off (though we are waiting for water tests and then inspections) along with blocking in the wall to keep that plumbing secured and for attaching speakers and grab bars to. We removed some blocks in the utility room wall to allow the electrician to get the theatrical electrical conduit from the dimmer racks to the actual theatre lights (or at least to the drops the lights will be attached to). We did some planning work - setting up a sample layout for stage and audience, to verify our audience seating numbers (looks like between 70 and 75, which fits in nicely with our current allowed maximum occupancy). We set up scaffolding for our electrician to work. All in all, a very busy, very productive day! Thanks once again to everyone who came out, including a good turnout of first-timers! Always nice to see new faces (though the regular builders are always a joy, too) Thanks again! | | Thursday, March 5th, 2009 | 12:14 pm [oldgrover]

This is hopefully the last build day before drywall. We'll have a BBQ lunch for those who come and help. Please wear clothing you can get dirty and come out and help! Hope to see you there (and yes.. I will bring Pie for lunch) | | Saturday, February 21st, 2009 | 3:16 pm [oldgrover]

KWLT Build Update
Hey, everyone! We had a great rebuild turnout, which is fantastic. It enabled us to really get a lot done. The biggest priority was clearing out the Stage One area so that we can get in to install conduit for lights, security systems, theatrical control, sound, etc. We needed to be able to wheel the scaffolding all over the area - and since it started off full of stuff, that was a problem. We ended up taking three trailerloads to the dump/recycling. Lots of this were scrap pieces or specific set pieces for specific plays - the table from 12 Angry Men, for instance, pieces of the stage extension from Hook, bits of the set from Melville Boys, even a piece from Generation Gap all went into the trailer to go to the dump. It would be fantastic to be able to retain these pieces "just in case" someone needs them in the future, but we simply don't have the storage to do so. We would have to rent off site storage - and they simply aren't worth the cost. There was also garbage left over from past rebuild days or set building days - we gave the whole place a going over, from top to bottom. In the end, we managed to clear out most of the space we needed - we're so glad we have the shed now, since that got stuffed completely full too. Our contractors (and us!) will be able to work now, so expect a build day announcement in the near future for a conduit bending and installing session. Thanks to everyone who came! In other news, KWLT Rebuild has joined the Twitter revolution - we'll be posting up to the minute updates as 'kwltrebuild' on twitter - http://twitter.com/kwltrebuild. You can also direct questions that way. Take care! Hope to see you out at the next rebuild! | | Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 | 10:52 pm [oldgrover]

Build Day - Feb 21st
Hi, everyone! I just had a productive meeting with some of our contractors and they've got some work for us to do! We need to finish some work in the walls, re-pack the shed and clear out the stage area so that they can install the electrical, security and lighting in there. That means it is time for another Build Day! Saturday, February 21st at 10am, at 9 Princess Street East. We've got lots to do, so come out and give us a hand. Anyone can come out - I'm often asked whether or not people need to be carpenters and the answer to that is NO! All you need is enthusiasm. Please dress appropriately for the weather (since we'll be unloading and loading the shed outside, along with doing a run to the dump) in clothes that you can get dirty. Thanks! Hope to see you there Please contact me if you have any questions or comments | | Saturday, January 24th, 2009 | 1:43 pm [oldgrover]

Interior Design - Lobby
Hi, everyone We just got our backflow preventer in (plumbing) and have just hired a new electrician, so things are moving on at a pretty good pace. However, we have to provide the electrician with a layout for our concession area and we just got sufficient info from our plumber to do so. So, in the next week, we need to finalize a concession area design. Want to help? Well, first of all, you could join my interior decorator committee - just drop a line here if you want to do that. Or, you could just comment on these plans... There are three (as of this posting time) blueprints at http://oldgrover.org/kwlt/lobby/The first is just the base blueprints of the lobby area. The second is with required, unmovable elements. And the third is my first plan attempt. To orient you, looking at the diagram, the white at the left is the glass main entrance, the two open doors on the right are the entrance to stage one. The door at the bottom is the green room door, the opening middle right is the archway to the bathrooms (not shown on these plans) and the top left is the concession area. The scale is each grid block is 12 inches on a side. Please feel free to comment and offer suggestions - or download the blueprints and scribble them up in a paint program (I just used the GIMP) |
