Introduction, Kung Fu and me Hello.
I just joined today and wish to introduce myself.
Call me Liáng Fén.
<lj-cut>
I have been a lifelong admirer of Chinese Martial Arts, but did not have the chance to train until I was 18, due to the lack of resources (books, videos, actual instructors) where I grew up.
Unfortunately, I barely learned any basic Long Fist techniques when I was in college, due to a large workload, plus an attempt to get into acting and directing that worked like attacking an experienced Warrior Monk with a gummy bear.
Many people say that Marial Arts training has saved their lives, but while I feel the same, it has nothing to do with being in a fight.
After college, my physical and psychological health were the pits. I was given some money for my birthday, so I looked into a few books on Kung Fu. While my job makes getting adiquate training difficult, I am starting to make progress with my training, which constists mostly of Long Fist techniques (chiefly Plum Blossom Fist and Cannon Fist, at the moment), although I do practice Crane techniques, as well. After the last few months, I find it easier to clear my head and relax. I don't have the twitches I used to have, and I don't feel sick as ofter, as long as I get to train. Recently, I was given guides for a Dragon Short Form, and a Tiger-Crane set, as well as a book on Chow Gar. it should be interesting to try something new.
However, I just wish I had an actual techer to show me these techniques and their applications; I tend to do better with in-person instruction. | | Saturday, March 21st, 2009 | 1:30 am [shangchi]

I've recently started working, and now that I'm making some money I'd like to study kung fu. Does anybody here know of any schools in Tacoma, WA? Any recommendations that can be made? Current Mood: inquisitive | | Monday, October 20th, 2008 | 8:26 am [beknar] |
invitation to all LA, San Diego and near LA martial artists
All, I live in San Diego, but once a month, I go to a small sparring event in LA, where we'll spar without gloves, with gloves, no protection, with protection and all manner of rulesets that people want to use or practice. You do not have to fight, you are welcome to train with us, watch, have lunch, watch a movie afterwards, etc. It's not REALLY like Fight Club, even though we call it the Garage-Fu fight club. All levels of contact, acceptable use of power, rulesets are determined by the two people who want to fight, so you can go anywhere from light to hard contact. We also do some one steps, just to get to know each other, get familiar with people's styles and personality, and to build camaraderie before we actually go at it. We're not there to kill each other, seriously, and it's a good bit of fun. The only thing we're really looking for is for people to have a good time with it, have a good attitude and really engage and participate. Yes, that sounds like some kind of preachy wishy washy self help stuff, but we don't want people getting mad because they took a shot, or feel terrible because they landed a particularly hard shot on someone. But, like I said, you don't HAVE to fight. We do some chi-sau, push hands, one steps, technique drilling, circuit training, etc. Please post here for interest or you can contact me at: mcbadbrutha@yahoo.com. We usually meet in Simi Valley. All styles, skill levels, experience welcome. Even untrained is welcome. We had a second meeting, and it both were 100% successes! We hope to have many more, with many more people. | | Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 | 10:36 pm [robinu]

Kuk Sool Won Ok! Time in my specific path in life to take on another Martial art to better hone my own skills and Develop My own style. (One hopes)
Per Shaolin GongFu Tradition you take on seperate styles. Now these can be other Shaolin Styles however I seek to better understand Martial Arts as a whole and hope my self as well. As such I've decided to branch out into another Martial art all together. Though similar to Shaolin GongFu (it is a Complete Martial Art), it has difference on their own.
I already have practiced shequan for many many years. As well as Dianxue and Chin Na.
SO!
My Question to everyone to which I hope to receive and Answer
Does anyone know of Kuk Sool Won - from a personal perspective. I can research it all I want, however I'd very much like others perspective on it.
Hope it's not so bold of a Question

Airborn Utensils (throwing chopsticks)
Several days ago, thinking back to a recent sensationalist video about chinese weapons (19:15-20:25), I picked up a handful of chopsticks and took aim at a Levitz furniture box. Though I based my approach on the style in that video, I was still surprised my chopsticks stuck on the first try. They also made a lovely thwock sound that warmed the heart of the little boy inside me. You know, the one who tried making catapults and slingshots as a kid. Ten minutes later the box looked like swiss cheese and I was quite content with myself. It made me wonder -- could the average chopstick be used as a thrown weapon? Were we overlooking a useful tool, as readily available as its longer cousin, the staff? Tonight, with a shortage of netflix and a night off from kungfu, I thought I'd undertake a short study of chopstick throwing. Hard vs. Soft, External vs. Internal
I know this is a very old debate (and not just on the internet) but I've been considering it lately. I know we have a lot of different artists here so I thought we might open it up to people who would like to discuss it. Obviously there are many possible divisions within martial arts. You could divide by religion, country, technique choice (e.g. striking and grappling), or similarities. One of the divisions you see talked about today are questions of hard vs. soft, external vs. internal. I don't want to define any of these terms because I think your definitions influence how you view these questions. A few to get people started: Can an art be both equally hard and soft? Are hard and external the same thing? Are soft and internal the same thing? If they're not, can an art be hard and internal or soft and external? Does an art need both techniques to be "complete?" (another definition) Feel free to use examples. . . or flame ;) | | Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 | 5:54 pm [rei_kun]

I had to post this. My Chinese is Rusty, but I believe the guy in the Yellow is a practicioner of Shuai Jiao(sp?) and the guy in the black does Baguazhang. I hope you guys are supplementing some grappling/ground fighting in your training. I assure you it will serve you well.
