Saw this posted in the MySpace "Korean Seouls" group. 


This list was complied from data gathered from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, World Resources Institute, UNESCO, UNICEF and OECD.

THERE ARE 2 LISTS... one for the number of procedures done and the number of procedures per capita (the ratio of people that got it done). The numbers complied are fairly recent and within a time of a year.

And remember Korea is known for their advances in plastic surgery, so many people go there to get it done.  So the actual number of koreans who got plastic surgery done is lower then stated. (this is what the person on MySpace wrote...and it didn't make a lot of sense to me, haha).

Interesting.  I thought it would be a little higher up, given the many stereotypes that Korea does the most plastic surgery out of any other country in Asia.

I wonder how the survey results were extracted. Did they just come up and ask people? I think an American would be less likely to lie than a Korean.

most of the koreans i know didn't get their surgery done in Korea-- they got it done in the United States.

i think those statistics are based on total-body plastic surgeries. if they were to take a poll on nations who had the most procedures done to the face, korea would be way up on the list.

Yeah very interesting. There is some theory that Korean plastic surgeons are highly skilled because they are raised using metal chopsticks. I'm not bad with wood chopsticks but slippery metal chopsticks are really, really hard to use. Some in Korea, oddly, take this metal chopstick experience to explain why Koreans are the most intelligent race in the universe... Someone actually published an article in a Seoul newspaper arguing this...

Yeah, I also read in the ilbo that the US is responsible for the Japanese occupation.

They print some pretty strange stuff.

There was some dicussion on my teacher message board about the source of smog in Korea. One ESL teacher's student claimed on good authority that smog came from America and the UK. Black smog from the UK and white smog from America, which mixed to produce grey smog over Korea.

Being a Canadian, when I encounter these kinds of weird ideas ("Nothing ever bad happens in Korea... bad things are because of Americans and Japanese.... America and Japan are the real enemies...Korean food is unique 100% healthy and no one has ever discovered food so good..."), especially from children, I have to remind myself what being a child in Canada was like. America was bad. Canada was good. Americans were all stupid and violent. Canadians are smart and peaceful. When someone shoots up their work place, that's typical America. When a Canadian shoots up his work place, that's American style violence.

My hometown Windsor shares a July 1/July 4 celebration with Detroit. It's called the Freedom Festival, a week long celebration of the world's longest undefended border. The culmination is a massive fireworks display along the Detroit river. Downtown Detroit is a sea of concrete while Windsor is one long river front park. The best vantage points are in Windsor. The population of Windsor literally doubles in one night when American come over to see the fireworks. This causes Windsor people to complain bitterly. "Those Americans come here and take all the best places to view the fireworks! We should shut down the border on fireworks night!"

It would seem the message of a week long celebration of an open, friendly border is lost on my fellow Canadians...
