Hi, i'm in Kolkata and i badly need a book "Teach yourself bengali". If someone has one and ready to share it or knows where to buy it in Kolkata (and for what price) i would really appreciate it. Thanks

My husband is currently working in Switzerland, and for purposes of my spouse visa, I needed to get my marriage certificate legalized. My marriage registrar helped me attest my certificate from Writers Building, Calcutta, along with the legalization. However, after the legalization was complete, I came to know that I would actually need an apostille sticker for a Swiss spouse visa and not the legalization stamps. So, I approached the MEA Branch office for the said sticker. That’s when the trouble began.

Day 1, middle of March

I stand in the queue for around 20 minutes, after which I reach the counter. I ask the gentleman, “Sir, I would like to get an apostille sticker for my marriage certificate. What should I do for that?”

“Read the board outside,” is his response.

The board reads, “Apostille sticker work will begin here from October 20, 2008.”

So I tell the gentleman that I’ve read the information, but that it is not helpful, and could he please tell me what I need to do to get the apostille sticker. Then he tells me that I need to get my marriage certificate and a postal order for Rs 50.

Day 2, March 26

I deposit my marriage certificate and the PO forgat the counter. The same gentleman is there. He looks through my marriage certificate.

MEA Gentleman: Where is the photocopy of the marriage certificate?

Me: But you didn’t ask me to get a photocopy!

MEA Gentleman: I tell everyone to get a photocopy. It is not possible that I have forgotten to tell you. You must have forgotten.

There is no photocopying shop nearby, so I take the bus and travel one bus stop and get a photocopy. I stand in the queue again to wait my turn.

I pass the marriage certificate, photocopy, and PO to the gentleman at the counter again.

MEA Gentleman: I cannot put the apostille sticker on this certificate! It has already been legalized! Why should I do double the work (his words EXACTLY)! I cannot accept this certificate.

In vain I tell him about my situation, how I had mistakenly got the legalization stamps, but he is adamant. So, finally, I ask him to check if everything else is alright on my documents. He checks, and says yes.

I write to my husband in Switzerland for the second copy of my marriage certificate so that I can get the apostille sticker on it. It takes me around a month to get it.

Day 3, April 22

I go to the MEA office with this second copy of the certificate. The same gentleman is there. I give him the fresh marriage certificate and the PO. He reviews the document, and then, to my utter dismay, says, “Where is the Writers Building stamp? I cannot give you the apostille sticker without the stamp!”

Me: Why are you doing this to me? Why don’t you give me all the information at one go? Why haven’t you got this information written anywhere in front of the office?

MEA Twerp: My job is to provide apostille stickers, not to say what is needed for getting the sticker (he said these exact same words).

Me: What are you saying??????

MEA Twerp: Yes. So many people come to get their documents legalized everyday. How do they know they need to get a Writers Building stamp first? Ask them. Don’t come here wasting my time. Get lost. (again, his exact same words)

So, my questions to you are:

1.      Is it not the responsibility of the MEA Branch Office Staff to provide information regarding requirements for any service they provide to the public? To give an example, if I were to request my Mother to cook me pulao for lunch, is it not my mother’s responsibility to tell me the complete list of ingredients that are needed by her to cook the said dish?

2.      Why is no public list of such requirements displayed prominently in any location around the MEA office? Is this not my right to information?

3.      Are the requirements for an Apostille sticker common public knowledge that everyone is assumed to know? Like how we all know that the sun rises in the east? Or is it specific information that the government must impart to its citizens?

4.      I now know that the requirements for the apostille sticker are enumerated online. However, there is no instruction from the MEA office to me to refer to the said website. How am I supposed to know to look online for the information?

5.      What action can I initiate against the said gentleman for withholding information, giving it to me in piecemeal fashion, and wasting my time?

I miss this place so much.

I am in a place with better opportunities and living an independent life that I wanted, but I never imagined I'd miss home that Calcutta is to me so much.

it's interesting to find kolkata in lj, otherwise a city is a 'memory' association to netizens, not a place may be. i am not curious to know who still stays in kolkata. rather i hope to find more shared experiences on this bitter-sweet city on virtual space.

A few days ago a friend of mine and I came up with an idea. That idea culminated into PostIndia.

"PostIndia is an experiment to delve more into the Indian psyche and find of the common threads the runs through the diversity of this magnificent nation. It seeks to tell the story of our great nation, its bustling cities, its myriad by lanes and of the people that inhabit it. A lot has been written about India, and a lot more will be, but we wish to explore what it means for you to be part of this country and some place you call home. Tell us about the place you come from, the place you go to work and the experiences that you have along the way. In a place as diverse as ours one could not help but be daubed with colors, black and white, saffron and green, and a multitude of colors along the way."

Please do visit and send send in your opinions.

Arundhati Roy wins literary prize

New Delhi, January 9
“The Algebra of Infinite Justice”, a collection of essays by writer Arundhati Roy on the hubris of the rich and the powerful and the plight of the poor and the homeless, was today selected for the 2005 Sahitya Akademi Award in English.

The book of political essays written between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2003, was the ‘’unanimous’’ choice of a jury comprising members Prof Bhalchandra Nemade, Mr Samik Bandhyopadhyay and Ms Vrinda Nabar. Akademi president Gopi Chand Narang approved the recommendation today.

Ms Roy will receive the award at a special function here on February 21, Akademi Secretary K Satchidanandan said. The award comprises a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque and a cheque for Rs 50,000. — UNI

I love this book, I recommend it on my pj website as well. Good for Arundhati, and its good to hear some Asian judges chose her as the winner, because judging from my uncles, she's normally seen as some sort of "loony left-wing idiot woman" ! Ha, glad not all of them are rigid right-wing old gits!

Hi,
I am coming to cal for a week starting tomorrow to meet some relatives. I wanted some accessories for my Digital Camera, a Panasonic FZ20. Is there any shop where I can buy the stuff? I am basically looking for grey markets that deal with camera accessories? I think there is something called bada bazaar, do you get these there? I wanted a 3rd party lens adapter for the camera so that I can attach filters and the likes.

Hi,
I do hope that this post is not against the community rules. I have a cousin in Kolkata. He is in the final year and he has to do a project intership for his final semester. He is studying in Tamil Nadu and surrendered his hostel rooms and returned back to Cal to do the proj, but suddenly they have told that they dont have any projects now. So he is left with no where to go.
I would appreciate it a lot if you could let me know of any companies, and contact details for the same, which give internships to final year students. The reason I am putting it here is because I know how strong the LJ community is and I know you can help me out and also, I dont know if my cousin uses LJ.

TIA

Hi, everyone!

I'm Kris, I just thought I would introduce myself. I have been a lurker on this board for quite some time but haven't quite had the courage to post.

I was born in Calcutta but have lived in the USA most of my life and am presently working as a teacher in France. I am posting because I will be in Calcutta for the first time since I left this coming April. Does anyone have any wise words, advice, recommendations as to "can't-miss" sites?

I would be much obliged....

I am wondering if anyone has read 'A Suitable Boy' by Vikram Seth. I would love to know what Indian readers feel about this book!!

I loved the movie Parineeta and would want to read the novel. As I do not know the Bengali language:-(, i was wondering if there are good translated english versions of this novel or any other novel written by Saratchandra?

Thanks
Anjali

i just read the book 'city of joy' by dominique lappeire.Isnt it ironic that it took a foriegner to narrate the poignant tale
of 'anand nagar'?though the book is all about slums, prostitution and trafficking....what makes the book so touching,is the celebration of human spirit
