Bannination

  • Aug. 20th, 2008 at 8:29 AM
Hey y'all,

When we say "don't stir up shit in other communities", we mean don't stir up shit in other communities. When shit stirring happens, there's generally a spike in membership requests here (yesterday, up 700% from each day the previous week or two) and then one of us mods has to track things down and ban people. Also, if you're going to request membership in a community, don't post elsewhere "I'm having a horrible day, so I hope they approve my membership at that fucking waste of a community so I can bitch someone out. :)" and then crybaby at us when we reject your membership. Basically, don't be fucking idiots and we can all play nice here.

- Your loving mods.

In case anyone is wondering what might be included in the definition of "don't be an asshole," it includes such things as completely unnecessary shout-outs.

Too bad, so sad, don't let the door hit you on the way out [info]lwood.

Why the fucking fuck is this posted in [info]punk_knitters? Then again, why is half the shit ever posted in there? At least when people post crochet stuff it's tangentially related. This is completely meaningless! With shitty photos to boot.

They might as well just name it punk_post_whatever_the_fuck_you_want community! The front page there now shows 20 posts. They include:
13 posts that are about knitting(questions, FOs), though this certainly does not mean they are good questions or FOs
7 questions=4 help me, 3 find me
6 FOs=a swatch (wtf?!); a batman sweater that's probably nice but poorly photographed; socks & hat; scarves & a sewn pillow; pin cushion & coffee cozy w/bonus pimp my blog plz be muh freind; frog hat

1 post about those stoopid knit cupcakes that I'm sure NO ONE has seen before despite the eleventeen times it's has been previously announced
2 OMG new KNITTY announcements
1 pimp my local knitting group
1 meme
1 video that I refuse to watch so I don't know if it is a song about knitting or what a really old video that includes yarnimation

So we have our first bannination since reopening the community.

Congratulations to [info]robinhoodvandal for being an asshole!

ADMIN: Open Community/Posting

  • Aug. 22nd, 2007 at 3:45 PM
Membership has been reopened.  We will only be evaluating new members to ensure that they are not sockpuppets or obvious trolls.

Posts are no longer moderated for current members.  New members will not be allowed to make any posts to the community for two weeks (but can comment) and will be set to unmoderated status once we feel that they grok what we're all about.

Have fun!

Edit: Damn, you people are fast!

Bannination Celebration

  • Mar. 20th, 2007 at 3:57 PM
As [info]apis_mellifera said in the last admin post, if people couldn’t play nice we were going to do a massive weeding of membership. Sadly, people cannot play nice, so many of you are no longer members. We removed everyone who joined in the past two months, along with anyone we didn’t recognize as one who contributes to the community. There is now a membership freeze until the end of the month, at which time a method for reapplication will be put in place. It’s too bad we have to do this, but hopefully it will solve both the jackassery that’s been present and the change in tone of the community over recent months.

We are also moderating posting for the time being because the quality and tone of the community has been declining lately. Please be patient when posting. There are 6 mods on very different sleep schedules, so your post likely won't sit for long. Also, please consider your level of GABYAW when posting. If members of this community know more about you than their real friends, perhaps you are sharing too much. Try to stay on topic. This is neither an advice nor general knitting info community. That stuff goes in [info]knitting or [info]knitting_chat.

Edit: And now we have a perm. ban for [info]bananapouch for a deleted comment. Play nice folks.

ADMIN: Un-banination

  • Nov. 15th, 2006 at 9:05 AM
After a lot of thought, I've decided to un-ban [info]thirdjane, based on the word of her friend, [info]heatherlayne_n and because we don't have anything other than conjecture that she's the trolling asshole (a conclusion that more than just the moderating team came to--we asked a few people for their thoughts).

From now on, our policy regarding banination of assholes is going to require an IP address from the person who got an anonymous comment. The userinfo will be updated accordingly.

I love it when one of our own posts FOs

I'm surprised every time I see a pattern from that book knit up as the pictures in the book itself made me think they were all mostly rubbish. Here, yet again, I am most pleasantly surprised.

ADMIN: Public shaming and banination

  • Nov. 8th, 2006 at 8:06 PM
Well.

Someone has been very, very, very busy being an asshole.

Since [info]thirdjane has been so busy, we've decided to relieve her of the burden of membership in [info]knitting_snark.

Go be an asshole somewhere else. You're not welcome here.

11/15/06 EDIT: Since the link between the trolling asshole and [info]thirdjane are tenuous at best, and because her friend [info]heatherlayne_n has come to her defense, the banination has been reversed.

Gorgeous, clear photos and excellent notes make Sleepsong a happy snarker. I'm also a huge fan of Meg Swansen's, so bonus points for doing one of her shawls.

This was something nice to oversleep and wake up to.

We haven't had one of these in a while...

The sweater fits her pefectly, the notes are decent, the photos are clear, and she created it with a clever mixture of three strands of laceweight yarns. Overall, an excellent FO!

an unusual post

  • Jun. 20th, 2006 at 7:54 PM
This is not about a particular post, but rather, a comment. I would just like to point out that [info]knittinmol referenced a prior post within [info]knitting that had a relevant FO complete with tips and pictures instead of just pointing to a an online link. I mean, that's part of what [info]knitting is all about, right? A collection of useful tidbits, look back into the memories for help, etc?

yay. [info]knitting is being used as a resource :)

Banninating the Countryside!

Rule 4 of this community:

If you see something snarked here, that means all snarking needs to stay here. No going back to the original post and stirring up trouble. Or privately emailing someone to tell them that they’ve been snarked. Or making anonymous comments. You get the idea.

This post was made, and someone from this community went over to that person's blog and left a nasty comment. Most blogs log IP addresses and referrals. We also track IP addresses in this community. Through the magic of IP addresses, the nasty comment leaver was matched with a member here. That member has been banned.

We are serious about the rules here people. When you see something here, you leave it here. You're all adults, control your behavior.

Knitting Snark T-Shirts

  • Apr. 17th, 2006 at 9:15 AM
As my friend [info]sistercoyote said in this morning's knitting report, I was inspired by a suggestion in a recent comment (that we should be a "reel club" with t-shirts and handshakes and all....), and was playing with some snarky t-shirts at CafePress this weekend, based on the various K_S tags. If you can't imagine actually wearing one of these (or giving them as a gift to a deserving somebody...), feel free to just giggle and move on. :)

Snarky T-shirt Designs back here... )

Nanoo whahoo...

You know, I was sitting around the house today and thought to myself... I really want to look like a slutty Robin Williams. How, oh how, to combine the wonky fishnets of my dreams AND a hairy chest motif, while keeping the color so screamingly loud that everyone can't help but notice my sartorial shenanigans?

Knitty, you have the answer, as always.

Excuse me folks, I've got some knittin' to do.

Revised Userinfo

New userinfo.

Read it, love it, live by it.

Happy New Year, fellow snarkers.  May 2006 be as deliciously snarky as 2005 was.

ADMIN: Recent [info]punk_knitters dust-up

Banination has occurred for trying to create drama in another community.  That's violation of the rules: "We're not here to stir up drama in other communities."

We're serious about the rules here.

Cut it out, people.  Don't you make me stop this car.
Hi everyone. We (your lovely moderators) have noticed an upswing in the number of posts targeting individual users, rather than the snark worthy material within those posts. This post is not directed at any particular snarkers, it is a general problem we've been discussing over the past few weeks.

While we realize that there are often repeat offenders who provide a lot of snark material, we want to keep the focus in this community on snarking posts, not people. As such, there will not be a "Hall of Stupid" or any tags calling out individual users.

Please take the time, before posting, to consider whether you are snarking the post because it is truly snark-worthy, or because it happened to be posted by a frequent target.

We will also be adding a requirement that new [info]knitting_snark members read all posts tagged "admin" before posting or commenting. If you are a current member and have not done so, please read those posts now.

Due to the large numbers of people who have been joining the community, we have decided to moderate membership for the time being. Preferably, we would like new members to be vouched for by existing, active members of the community. If this is not possible, we will consider each applicant on a case by case basis.

Furthermore, we will be going through the membership and removing all sock puppet accounts. A sock puppet account is one that belongs to only a handful of communities, has no friends, interests, or posts, and who does not actively participate in [info]knitting_snark. If your account meets these criteria and you are not a sock puppet, please contact a moderator

We all really like the overall tone of this community and hope to keep things civil as the community grows. Thank you everyone for your cooperation.

Edit: It is not necessary to reply to this post telling me you are not a sock puppet. If your journal fits ALL the characteristics of a sock puppet, and you are not one, contact the mods via email. Also, there is no requirement to participate in this community, lurking is fine.
