KNIT CAR??
I'm trying to find a pattern for a knit toy car for my 3-year-old. He told me last night that he wants to be a girl so he can knit, HAHA! I told him he can just tell me what he wants and I'll see if I can make it for him. He immediately yelled "A CAR!!!" He's obsessed w/ cars.

I tried googling a pattern for a knit car, and I looked at the toys in the free pattern website, but I can't find anything. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, and it can be all one color. He won't care.

I just learned to knit a few months ago, so an easy pattern would be the best, but I'll try anything.

Thank you everyone!!

Oh, I know. I'm just being a wiseass.
But I still get "wow, you're a guy and you knit," comments.
Yeah, I can cook, too.
And make a bed and iron a shirt and scour a toilet and fold fitted sheets.
Just don't ask me to dust.

But rather than all those things, I'd rather be knitting.

;-)

BTW, my understanding is that kids don't really have the wherewithal to handle needles well until at least 5 or 6. But that's from what I've read, not because I've taught kids how to knit. I do not claim to be an expert on teaching kids to knit, just on how to fold fitted sheets.

I love it when kids make comments like that. I mean, if it was coming from an adult, it could be totally rude, but they're so sincere when they're that age. :-) It's just cute.

The easiest thing would likely be to knit the pieces separately as detailed as you want (probably one piece each for the sides, one for the top and one for the bottom), and then stitch them together and stuff it. It's just require a bit of shaping which you can probably chart out fairly easily since it's just flat knitting.

If you were willing to give it a shot, do it on graph paper, just one piece at a time. Black out the squares you would want for the car until you have the right silhouette. Start with one side and when you have it, cut out 2 (one for each side). The bottom and top could technically just be rectangles that follow the curves of the side. Once you have all your paper pieces cut, tape them together to make sure you like the way it'll look. If so, then just use the graph paper you colored and cut as your pattern. The places where the graph squares increase in number should have an increase and where the squares decrease should have a decrease.

I found two on Ravelry, although I have never tried either one personally.

There is a pattern for a Large Sports Car in Jean Greenhowe Knitted Toys, by (obviously) Jean Greenhow. It is available on Amazon.com

There is also a pattern called "Car and Train" in Aussie Jean's Toy Knitting Patterns by Jean Woods. It is available here: http://home.alphalink.com.au/~woodsy/

Hope that helps!

This pattern can be ordered online for $3 AUS.

Good luck & I hope this helps!!

I have a 9 year old boy who also wants to learn. It's not a boy-thing, it's an age-thing. My 3 year old uses my knitting needles as swords and drum sticks....he's too young, which is why I said I'd just make it for him. I told him when he gets older, I could teach him.

I mentioned this in an above comment......anytime he sees me doing anything that he wants to do, he says "I want to be a girl so I can do that too"....it's funny. I guess I should've left out our little conversation last night and just asked for a car pattern here, because I didn't mean to make anyone think I'm against boys learning how to knit. :-/

I started with fiber arts when I was that age. Well, kind of. When I was three or four, my mum taught me how to "finger knit", and I made tons of scarfs and such. (WikiHow - Finger Knitting) My father started me on different knots around that time as well. When I was a bit older, around five or six, I was introduced to the wonders of the knitty knobby (The Lost Art of Knitting Nacies). Around the same time, maybe seven, I learned how to crochet. I finally started knitting around nine or ten, as well as Weavette looms, and beading.
