FO: Burridge Lake afghan
I've been MIA for a while, because I was finishing the Burridge Lake afghan for my brother-in-law's birthday. I finished last night; his birthday is today!

I used Caron Simply Soft in Bone, about 10 skeins, I think, on size 8 needles.

This was alot of fun to knit, but this much cabling really hurt my shoulders!

Also, there are mistakes in the pattern; most of them were corrected in Magknits, but the center braid of the center panel should be: Row 23 should be C4B for all the C4F.

Anyway, this certainly took me a while! For the center panel, I would average about one pattern repeat per day; for the side panels, two repeats. I knit other things in between, but this sucker took me six months. Well worth it, though -- I'm quite proud of it!

For progress and close-up pics, see my blog

That's gorgeously stunning. I have just recently discovered the joys of cabling and am cabling everything but my cat, so I really appreciate the time it takes AND the physical pain of doing too much at once! Your brother is indeed very lucky.

Oh, my brother-in-law was just an excuse for me to make the blanket :) I have no need for it, but just HAD to make it. The finished product is just secondary :)

And thank you!

It doesn't happen often that I open a link to an FO and blurt out "Ohhhh my god!" aloud, but this did it. What a triumph of patience! I hope your brother-in-law appreciates all the work that went into that!

Aww, thank you!

Yes, it really was a triumph of patience, as you can see here. I felt so DONE after one panel, I'm shocked I actually finished :)

Honestly, I don't really care if he likes it. I mean, I think he will, he's a good guy that generally appreciates that sort of thing. But I'm just happy with it, and that's good enough for me :)

Thank you! When the pattern came out, I picked my jaw up off the floor, wiped up the drool puddle, and ordered the yarn right away. It just had to be made.

Wow! That is gorgeous - I don't think I could give it away (but then I have a long history of making things for others & then ending up buying them a gift & keeping the one I made - I might be able to give it to one of my daughters or my SO or one of the grands when they're older but no on else). Somehow I missed that pattern - now I'll have to look for some yarn for it.

That is just lovely, I'm sure your brother-in-law will cherish it for many years to come. Wouldn't it be nice if something you knit becomes something of a family heirloom? And I think this piece has cherished heirloom knitted all over it.

I just discovered cables myself and I am hooked. I would give an arm and a leg to be able to do something like this afghan. Very well done!

Thank you very much! And is it weird that I don't even care if he likes it? I love it, and I loved making it, and that's all I want. But since he and I are good friends, I'm sure he'll like it just fine, and if he hates it, I'll happily take it back :)

Aren't cables awesome and addictive? They're my favorite thing to knit. You can definitely do this afghan! It's not any more difficult than any other cabled project, it just takes for-ev-er.

That is absolutely gorgeous. Amazing. Did you chart out the cables, or did you do them from the written instructions?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]blakdove
2008-04-05 05:18 pm UTC (link)
Thank you!

No, I didn't chart -- I have an easier time going from written directions, because it's too easy for me to confuse things slanting to the left or to the right. And after the first two repeats, I didn't even need the directions anymore, so it didn't really matter.

I admit, when I read 'afghan' I was skeptical. Yes, I am an afghan bigot sometimes, but that is not what I was expecting. It is truly gorgeous. I said 'uhhh'. but in a 'oh wow, pretty, don't even know how to do that' way.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]blakdove
2008-04-05 05:20 pm UTC (link)
Haha, I can't blame you for being skeptical, and I even like afghans. Some of them are...um...creative...

It's funny, because when this pattern came out, I was looking for an afghan pattern basically EXACTLY like it. I was going to design one if I hadn't found it, but this pattern basically did the work of grouping cables for me.

Wow, congrats! I started mine three weeks ago and I'm 2/3 of the way done one panel. I'm hoping to have it done for May 30th, but who knows. It's so much work! But beautiful.... so beautiful!

Those skeins you used must have been huge, though! My afghan is going to take 40 skeins!!!11one

Thank you! Yeah, it is tons of work. You can do it, though, if you try! I finished one of the panels in about 9 days, so it can go quickly.

Yeah, these are 7 oz, 300+ yard skeins. I would have loved to use wool, but the cheapest wool would have cost me over twice as much, and I just could not afford that.

WOW. Just.. WOW. I would love to make that for my friend's wedding in September, but I don't think I could focus on something that big for as long as it would take me to do it... Especially over the summer months...
