lace scarf pattern
Disclaimer: I have never written a pattern before, and I'm not an experienced lace knitter. I tried very hard to get all the necessary information in here, but I'm not that familiar with formats and usual things that go in a pattern. If I need to clarify anything, please let me know.

I posted about the scarf a couple days ago, here.

Hum. People usually name patterns. I'm going to call this one "Luma", for the person I'm most likely to gift the scarf to.

This is the scarf:

I used:

approximately 400 yards (less than one skein) of Misti Alpaca laceweight
US size 5 bamboo straight needles
7 stitch markers
gauge is unimportant - mine was about 4-4.5 stitches/inch after blocking, in pattern

You should use: whatever takes your fancy, though I highly, highly recommend yarn that blocks well, because aside from lace being prettier after blocking, this particular scarf curled badly without it.

I slipped last stitch of each row purlwise

Cast on 43 stitches (I used backwards loop)
knit two rows (2 rows garter stitch)
start with row 0 on chart (this is a wrong side row) and work through row 50
repeat rows 3-50 as many times as desired (think I did it 13 times before I thought it was getting kind of too long)
work rows 51 and 52
knit two rows garter stitch

Binding off: I wanted something that would look like the cast-on. I left a tail longer than I thought I would need and broke yarn, and threaded end of yarn through a yarn needle, then inserted needle purl-wise through second stitch from end of needle, then purl-wise through first stitch. Then purl-wise through third stitch, then back again purl-wise through second. Then purl-wise through fourth, then through third again, and so on, drawing yarn not very tight after each stitch.
DIAGRAM here

Key for chart:
Chart is for pattern as seen from right side. Right side (odd-numbered) rows worked right to left, wrong side (even-numbered) from left to right.
O = yarn over
/ = right-slanted decrease
\ = left-slanted decrease
triangle = double decrease (I used slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over)
ETA: - = purl (as seen from right side)
blank square = knit (as seen from right side)

The red lines are where I put stitch markers. Use them or not, or place them differently.
CHART is here

Now give your scarf a nice bath, and block the dickens out of it.

If anyone knits this, I'd be tickled to see a picture. If there are errors I will try to fix them, or if the pattern is not clear I'll try to explain more.

Oooh....once I wade through the rest of the lace on my needles, I think I'm going to give this one a shot. :) Nice!

*bookmarks* Thank you! I've got so many projects going right now, it'll be a while but I love how your scarf came out. I'd love to try it sometime.

"Luma" is very intriguing. It's the first lacy thing I've seen that I personally might want to make. I like the asymmetry of it. Congratulations on your innovativeness (is that a word?)

I like this a LOT. I've bookmarked it. I've been collecting lace patterns for my first try at lace. I like that it is squares - I've never seen anything like it. Very unique, and great design. Its like a piece of art!

AARGH!! You're going to turn me into "the one that always give scarves for Christmas!" [yes, that means at least two people got scarves from me for Christmas last year...LOL] I *swear*! This is *so* pretty, and I'm betting my sister would really like it.

Oh, so pretty!

The scarf chart....
[info]sassysean

I want to make this scarf so bad... it is beautiful. I tried printing the chart 4 times twice at work and twice at home.

I could only get row 10 to 52 to print and the last 4 columns would not print. I tried moving the chart around on the screen to no avail.

I don't like the way the PrtScn option works so I didn't try it.

If you (or anyone) knows another way I could get the entire chart on the same page could you please let me know???

Hum. I am Not a Geek, and I don't have the faintest idea what the trouble could be. The chart is sized so that it prints pretty much exactly on one sheet of paper for me, if I open it in firefox, make sure it's full-size and not shrunk to fit the screen the way firefox typically opens images.

Are you printing from a browser window or a graphics program? I'm not sure how you're moving the chart around on the screen.

OK, I made a smaller one to fit the area you were able to print. It is somewhat less pretty but should still be usable. If you email me at haleth at gmail.com I will send it to you!

Love the scarf. And I love that it takes just one ball of lace weight yarn. Now if I can just pick a color from my stash, I'll be casting on tonight!
