FO: Kimono sweater
I finally finished my first sweater!

It's the Kimono-style sweater from KnitPicks.

I'm pretty pleased. It came out just a touch too big -- I didn't want it to be skin-tight, but I think I should've made it a bit smaller. It'll probably shrink, though. I hope.

One more, because I'm proud:

It's in KnitPicks Merino Style (color: Moss), and it's VERY warm and soft.

I wore it to work yesterday, and there's nothing quite like wearing a sweater you made yourself. It's also an extremely light-weight, warm, and comfortable sweater.

I have to say, it was a good beginner's sweater. There's minimal shaping, and not alot of seaming, although seaming in that neckband nearly killed me, because it kept not fitting right. You'd need to know how to knit flat and in the round on circular needles, pick up stitches, and how to cable and decrease via k2tog and ssk, but that's it.

I changed the pattern a bit -- I knit the sleeves in the round and, therefore, had to graft the cuffs, but it definitely saved me alot of time on seaming, and I think it looks neater.

I also found a couple of mistakes in the pattern. For the bottom fishing net cable pattern, rows 19-24 say to repeat rows 1-6, but that doesn't work out to pattern. I can't remember quite what I did. I think I repeated rows 15 and 16, then 3-6, and that worked out. It becomes obvious what to do from the pattern. Also, for the cuffs, row 7 should say "knit 2, p2, k3, RIGHT cable, p2, k2," rather than LEFT cable.

I like how yours looks better than the one on the knitpicks website. :)

Agreed-- it's much more flattering than it looked in their picture. I may have to try it now.

Thank you very much!

I think this would be a very good first sweater, because it's deceptively easy to make but doesn't LOOK like a simple, beginner sweater. Go for it!

Must...make...sweater. I'd been staring at the pattern online awhile, but I couldn't decide how it'd look on a real person in real lighting. Turns out it's gorgeous, and now I'm after making one- if you can figure out what you did to the cables on the bottom, I'll love you forever.

Oh and...first sweater? Really? It's amazing. Is the pattern really not that hard, or are you just a genious knitter that I should worship from afar?

Thank you!

I found what I did (smart me, I posted it when I posted my in-progress pics!). So, rows 19 and 20 should be done as rows 11 and 12, respectively, and then rows 21-24 are done as rows 3-6. Like I said, though, it's obvious what to do when you get to that point, because of the way that the cables are twisted.

I think the pattern is really, really not hard. Basically, you knit the lower body as a big tube, with no shaping. Then you put half the stitches on a holder and knit the back as a big rectangle -- no shaping whatsoever for arms or neck. Then you work half of the stitches on the holder at a time for the front, and the ONLY shaping you do in the whole sweater is decreasing to make the V-shaped neck. The sleeves are knit as big rectangles (or in my case, big tubes, because I like knitting in the round better than flat). That's it! And I think that the biggest problem for knitting a sweater is seaming it together. But since these are drop sleeves, and since half the body is knit in a tube anyway, it's really easy to seam, except for the neckband.

I'm by no means a genius knitter (I'm barely an intermediate one!), so if I can do it, so can you :)

wow, that looks so much nicer than the catalogue. Good to see that it works out on people who aren't the way too stick thin models in magazines. I also adore the green color, it's perfect! And the cables on the sleeves look really well blocked- they definitely "pop"! Good job, what a nice FO.

Thank you so much! I liked the sleeve cables so much that I used them in the square that I sent out for a square exchange. And they're fun to do!

I'm always wary of catalog pictures, myself. What looks good on them may or may not look good on me, and I'm just average/medium sized! That's SO frustrating! And then they wonder why so many women have eating disorders. Hello?

That is AWESOME. Terrific job! And now you have me reconsidering the sweater as well... I've seen the pattern in their catalog so many times, and thought it was kinda neat, but it seemed... stiff. Like the model was uncomfortable wearing it. *Yours* looks comfy as well as gorgeous. Great job!

[info]blakdove

Thanks so much! It really IS very comfy, and soooo soft. It really doesn't feel like you're wearing a sweater, and yet it's super-warm. But I did substitute Merino Style for Elegance (I'm vegetarian and try not to use silk, and it also came out to less than half the price). So I don't know how it would work out in the suggested yarn.

Thank you! I love the sleeves, and I purposely made them a bit longer. But they snag on everything, so I had them rolled when I was working.

I love the merino. I forgot I was even wearing a sweater, it's so light and comfortable. And sooo nice to knit.

Thank you very much!

I was afraid it'd take forever, too. But Merino Style is actually pretty heavy for a sports weight. It's almost closer to worsted, really. So it worked up quite quickly. Had I not waited for the sucker to damp-block for four days (it's so cold at our apartment that nothing dries quickly), I'd have finished it in two weeks. I actually started it as an unofficial Olympics project, but since I never joined a team, it didn't count.
