FO: VW Bug Cozy
Here's a totally unnecessary FO as far as objects with a purpose go, but one I wanted to share with you all, because it is pretty cool as an example of knitting for art's sake, or a community knitting project.

Recently, the LYSs here in Columbus has sign up sheets for something called the Extreme Knitting Team. The goal of this group was to produce a knitted VW bug cozy to be on display at an annual local art/craft fair called Winterfair. The cozy was on display, and kids were allowed to add the embellishments at the event, so it got more decorated throughout the weekend. They also had volunteers to be there to answer questions, and get people interested in knitting, and pass out information related to local knitting groups.

I signed up to knit one of the car body pieces. In return, I was given a traced tissue paper outline of my piece (the trunk), size 19 needles and a bunch of Lion Brand "Big" yarn (LB was a sponsor of the project).

The reason I signed up was to give myself some practice in knitting a piece to given dimensions. And practice I got. I did the math repeatedly, but trial and error really got involved in this a lot, especially because while the gauge of 1 stitch per inch made the math easy, it made the gentle curve of the piece rather difficult to figure out.

I ended up pinning the tissue paper piece down on my blocking board, which has one inch squares on it, and laying down my knitted piece on top of it every row or so to double check.

After we all turned in our car pieces and the knitted embellishments (flowers, animals, and even a pair of fuzzy dice) someone got the thankless job of sewing the pieces together, and the car went on display.

My system in progress:

All done and on display:

More photos and discussion of the in progress and finished car at my blog here and here.

I believe the plan is to enter this in art car parades, and display it at various knitting related events around town as well.

that rules!!! a knitted car cozy.....faboo! i think that would be a fabulous gift for a person who is slightly obsessed with their car....but then, i'm weird like that. (but, who has the time to knit the whole thing by themselves? oh wait...maybe i do...lol)

Honestly, with that yarn, I doubt it would take that long. The stuff is three strands of chunky yarn plied together, so it's about the same diameter as my thumb. Freakin' huge. I can't imagine what you could make out of it successfully on a smaller scale than a car cozy. :-)

lol good point. Hrm....maybe if i'm super sneaky about it, and super ambitious, i could buy a buttload of it in a really girly color and then knit up a cozy for my guys 33 ford pick-em-up......lol I always tell him i'm going to knit him something in a really girly color cause i call him my little princess

That's really impressive! Now I wish I had gone to Winterfair.

What LYS are you talking about? I'm from Dublin, so I generally go to a store in that area near Henderson Road. I'm always looking for new yarn stores near me. :)

I think you're talking about The Yarn Shop? They were a sponsor too. I tend not to shop there because I've never gotten really friendly service there. I don't know if it's my age or what (I'm 29, but look younger sometimes.)

I go to Knitter's Mercantile, in Graceland Shopping center. They are my LYS of choice since Wolfe Fiber Arts closed down. Heavenly Creations is in Wolfe's old space on 5th in Grandview. They have a small but nice selection. Temptations is on High St. in Dublin -- I like it, but it's seldom you get me out as far as 270, so I've only been once.

There is also a Yarn Shop location in Pickerington, and rumor has it you can window shop yarnmarket.com's warehouse, which is also out there. There's also a new shop that I haven't been too in Hilliard on Cemetary Rd. near the Starliner Diner.

Are you in any Stitch n' Bitch groups locally? I run the downtownColumbusSNB, and we have links there to groups that meet all over town, if you are interested.

Yeah, The Yarn Shop. I couldn't remember their name, which is rather silly, cause it's so easy. I've been to Temptations as well, but I prefer The Yarn Shop.

I haven't been to Knitter's Merchantile or Heavenly Creations, though, so I'll have to check those out when I get home.

I'm away at college most of the year, so I'm not in any SnB groups, but I'm hoping they'll have some sort of knit group wherever I decide to go for law school. I think I'm the only knitter on campus here :)

I think that may be where the original idea came from. I have the sneaking suspicion Lion Brand may be getting groups to do this with their yarn, because I seem to remember that one from their newsletter last year. I think only one woman did that one though.

Ours arguably has a better fit, but hers has hubcaps!
