fish blanket and little kid hats
Hi! I hardly ever post here, but a while back a couple people posted this fish blanket, but then when you make those fish they end up being not even close to flat.
I figured out a way to make them flat.

Pretty much I just changed the pattern so that it decreased right next to the edge, instead of in the middle.

I don't have a picture of what they looked like with the original pattern, but here is what they look like with the changed one. I made them on sz 11 needles and double-stranded caron simply soft because I want a full-sized bed cover and there's no way I'm making upwards of 200 fish.

I'm sorry if that's not okay to repost this pattern, but I didn't make it up at all, I just figured out a way to make it lie flat.

Also, does anyone know of a good toddler hat? I'm making hats for my 2-year-old cousins and I have no idea how big their heads are. I did find some, like this and this, but I wanted to know if there are any very good ones that anyone's tried out. Also, how long should a scarf be for a kid that age?

Yeah, I was really sad about that too, I don't know how the lady on the website made a flat blanket from them. Maybe it was blocked really hard, or something.

actually, when you put them together they flatten out. The fish don't fit perfectly together and you have to pull the main body a bit more to sew them together which flattens them out nicely.

You might try the Lil Devil Baby Hat. It's worked quite well for me the couple of times I've made it. Now I prefer dinosaur hats though. :)

Aw, both of those are really cute. I think I'll try the devil hat. Maybe without the horns, because I don't think the mommies would let them wear a devil hat, even if they thought it was funny.

Did you design the dino hat? Is the pattern free? or bought from somewhere? I have to make that for someone I know for christmas!

I did design the dino hat, but haven't had time to write the pattern up yet. It does size up well into an adult version, as can be seen here: http://www.tvini.com/images/adultspinesback1.jpg

When I get time to write it up, I'll definitely let you know, but I don't know if it'll be before Christmas. Otherwise... well, you can always wing it. :)

Oh, this is for the toddler son of a friend of mine-- the child size is what I want! Unfortunately, I am not to the "winging it" stage of knitting yet. However, I so spin my own yarn. So if that can tempt you with some as a bribe to get it done sooner.... hahaha
I just made a black and gold luscious merino bulky I'm calling "wooly bear" No good pictures yet. I suck at pictures.

Thank you for posting this. I'm planning on making a scarf out of the fish like that, and I'd have been crushed to have them all curled. Note to self: print this out.

My daughter's nearly 2, her head is about 20 inches. I used the simple hat calcualtor and made her a simple rolled brim hat, I also made one for her friend's 2nd birthday and used her measurements (my daughter's that is,) and it fit her, maybe I used the measurement for 19 inches, can't remember. But I like using the simple hat calculator! It lets you pretty much design whatever you want. But, I think 19-20 inches is a good estimate for a toddler head size, in my personal experiences.

Nice fish BTW!

Young children should not wear scarves! Children have been strangled when scarves and pull strings on hoods have gotten caught on playground equipment. Better to make a "dicky" type of garment.

Second. My mom makes coats for kids through her sewing group, and she had to add a column in the newsletter telling people not to put drawstrings in hoods and buttons that could come off. One lady asked how to keep the hood from falling backwards, and the reply was to put a little bit of elastic in it.

Wow, that got kind of off topic. Sorry.

Well, these are more for things like on the way to church and other well-supervised things. They're both only children, so both of their parent's always watch them like hawks. I'll have to think about that though. Thanks for the warning!

Thank you!!! I started the fish blanket a few months ago and quickly gave up because the fish curled so bad and were so small! Now I'm going to try them again with your pattern alterations.

Okay, this is weird. I *just* got my pictures back of the fish blanket I finished a few days ago, made from the original pattern. I'll be posting them as soon as I get them loaded.

Mine is made with Cotton Fine on a gague of 7 sts per inch, so I had to make about 160 fish to create a toddler-size blanket. I had made one years ago soon after I first saw the pattern, and both times I had issues with the seams causing the fish to ripple. This time, though, I abandoned the suggested crochet seam and whip-stitched it all together, which made it lie much flatter (though still with a not-entirely-unpleasant ripple). I also blocked the crap out of the fish. :)

2-year-old heads run in the 18" to 20" range; an 18" hat with a decent amount of stretch should fit well even at the larger end of the range, and be snug enough to stay on.

There's an error in your change.

Slip, SSK, K1, Kfb, SSK, K2tog, Kfb, K1, K2tog, K1
Slip, K4, P2, K5
Slip, SSK, K1, Kfb, SSK, K2tog, Kfb, K1, K2tog, K1
Slip, K10
Slip, SSK, K1, Kfb, K2tog, Kfb, K2tog, K1
Slip, K9

The italiced line equals 14 st and there's only 12 left (I ran home from work and started on a fish!) I omitted the middle K1s to make mine work.

Whoops! The last decrease row has an error too. It's 11 stitches, but we're down to 10. I omitted the first K1 to make it come out right.
Guess I should have kept going before I commented!

OMG! Thank You for this pattern alteration. I had all this Caron simply soft in my stash because every time I go into Wal-Mart I had to go straight back to the yarn and see if they had anything new. I always got several skeins of the simply soft cause it is very inexpensive and soooo soft and has a nice sheen. it makes a perfect blanket.

Again, thank you :)

You're welcome. I don't remember if I changed it in the pattern, but there is a comment above that corrects some errors I made typing it up.
I have a lot of simply soft too. Every time I see it at the store I think "It's so soft! so many colors! and so cheap!", so I usually end up bringing home a ball.
