Jayne hat army, unite!

So I've been telling the last few people who ordered Jayne hat kits that it could be a week before I get to mail out their package, because I am waiting for a shipment of yellow yarn to come in. I joked that Browncoat knitters are single-handedly creating a yellow yarn shortage. More yellow arrives on my doorstep today or tomorrow, by the way.

At least, I thought I was joking about us causing the shortage.

I went to the Needlecraft Center in Davidson, NC today because they had some rust yarn (which, yes, I am now very low on and also waiting for) and they mentioned that they had googled the hat and found a picture of it. I said that was me, and they treated me like some kind of minor knitting celebrity. I feel more like a knitting curiosity, but I'll take it anyway.

Anyway, I explained about my supply chain problems, and they said, "Oh, we can order cones from the mill too!" Needless to say, I was all over that. As it stands, the yarn has to go from Nebraska to Oregon, then from the middleman in Oregon to me in North Carolina, and shipping is a bitch. So they called the mill.

LYS: "Yes, I'm calling to see if you have cones available of Sunburst Gold, Autumn..."
Brown Sheep: "Oh, you must be knitting those caps!"

Yes, it's apparently true, we ARE causing a shortage of yarn, all by our little selves. I love it.

So what does that make us?

Big damn knitters, sir!

you should go for the double-base-chain of command instead. :-P It's way more fun to say.

Heh.

Just make sure you don't start selling kits with yarn I like to use. Otherwise I may have to beat you up. ;-)

(Seriously, that's very cool. And I'm happy I don't like Lamb's Pride, 'cause the shortage won't affect me!)

Thanks! I made the Zoe one myself, borrowing the idea from [info]cleolinda, of course! If I run across one featuring all the ladies of Serenity, or make one myself, I will most definitely share. :)

lol I love it. I made mine out of red hart because I am a poor college student. I wore it around campus the day the movie came out and people kept asking me if I could make them one.

Bwahaha!
I'm making one for my SO, sort of- he refuses to wear those colors, so it's more of a Jayne-style hat then a Jayne hat.

The number of people who have asked me if I will make one for Himself is just stupifying.

Himself would sooner take a bullet to the brainpan than wear that hat.

But I still find it all manner of funny that there's actually a *shortage*.

Hey, hon! I'm commenting here because I'm a little paraonid about replying to that post in bigdamnknitters right now, trying to keep a low profile for the moment. Is the post you made today something I should be worried about? I'm pretty high up in search results when one looks for that hat. If it's something that should concern me, could you drop me a line at style at booboomonkey period com ?

Thanks, sugar.

Browncoats Unite! My bf is so tuned in to the hat, he pointed out in the movie the nanosecond Jayne wears it, before I even noticed it :) So far, Cascade 220 and Lamb's pride seem to be in full stock at the LYS's. However, I had a hell of a time trying to find it in any other type of yarn, including *shock* red heart, caron and the like.

I guess there really isn't anything us Browncoat knitters are afraid of!

I'm also using Red Heart. Carrot is great for the orange and I had to order Gold (Red Heart discontinued it, the %$2#&s), but I can't seem to find anything good for the reddish color of the ear flaps. What did you end up using?

Sadly, I wasn's able to get my act together for the movie, but I'm making about half a dozen of them for Christmas presents.

I blame you all. I was blissfully ignorant of the existence of Firefly until all this discussion about "Jayne hats." I held out for a while, I swear. And then about three weeks ago I found out that a friend had the DVDs of the series. I watched 8 episodes the first day I had them. And (after I get the chance to see Serenity) have to be sad that there is no more. ;-)

I did the same, actually, with the not knowing anything until this whole hat business. I even had a roomie ask me to make him a hat. I told him if he found me a pattern and got the yarn then I would do it. He didn't, so I was able to hold out, but it might end up being his birthday present.

Woo! More Jayne hats! I used KnitPicks wool of the andes for my Jayne hat(s). I really wanted to try some LP bulky for them, but not if there's a gorram shortage!

So what does that make us?

Actually...

At ComicCon in San Diego two years ago, they had the entire cast out to promote the movie. This was the big draw.

Apparently, a bunch of fans who were sitting front and center for the panel all were wearing Jayne hats.

Legend has it that Baldwin just busted up when he saw that.

Actually the first big Serenity SD ComicCon appearance was in 2004. I was in the room for that, as I'd only just learned Joss and the full cast would be there two days before I was scheduled to go. I'd just gottten into Firefly a few weeks before the con, and didn't have my own Jayne hat knitted up yet. I did spot lots of Jayne hats at the con that weekend.

The big hall for the Serenity panel was quite full, and I didn't manage to get close enough to the front to see a row of Jayne hats. But there were a few scattered hats around the room. After seeing so many hats in SD that weekend, I knew I had to make one for myself when I could.

I'm sure Baldwin was quite surprised by our reaction that day, as were the rest of the cast. If you've seen any of the Serenity preview stuff on the Battlestar Galactica bonus disk, you'll remember a clip of that panel and the humongous standing ovation we gave Joss & cast. I think they were floored by it. Adam's reaction on the clip is "I think they like us."

Indeed.

GAH! I just got a request from a friend to make the Jayne hat, I'm being sucked in! How are you set for wool right now or should I try to find my own and skip your kit?

I also wanted to see if your pattern has sizes....my friend seems to have a smallish head.

Well, the yellow just came in this afternoon (YES!) and I've got a small amount of orange with more coming in tomorrow. Red doesn't seem to be a problem. I can fill some orders tonight, but will still probably be backordered until tomorrow. I'm telling new orderers it'll be a week before their stuff goes out, just to be safe.

Oops. Didn't answer size question. Yep, it's sized from 21" to 24". Here's a pic of a 20" shell on my six-year-old, so you can figure that 21 will probably suit your friend. If not, I can always size it down for you - it's not hard. :)

Heh. It's not you - there's no place to click. I didn't want to put something automatic up, out of fear that 100 people would order at once and then I'd go insane.

You can e-mail me at style at booboomonkey dot com for info on the kit.
