REVIEW: Tvini's Cunning Jayne Cobb Hat Kit
I would like to take a moment to praise Tvini for her fantastic customer service and for how helpful she was to me earlier this week.

I posted earlier this week that my fiance wanted me to make him a cunning Jayne Cobb hat so he could wear it to the premiere of “Serenity” this Friday night. Of course, there’s nothing I want more than to outfit my uber-geek in a knitterly fashion, especially when it’s something we’re geeky about together. Call it bonding. So Tvini offered me one of the kits she sells, saving me much money in yarn that I’d have to buy full skeins of, and including the pattern and shipping.

The package was shipped Monday, lightning quick, as soon as she received word that I’d sent funds. It arrived yesterday! Inside the color coordinated tissue paper I found ziplock bags that included the yarn, a pre-made pom-pom (woot!), plastic sheeted color photo instructions, and even plastic stitch-markers! She also included instructions and photos for techniques a knitter might not know, like the cable cast on and spit-splicing. I’d never done the cast on that way so it was very useful.

I was very impressed at the detailed instructions and the clear color photos. The only thing I could have asked for is a picture of the fully finished hat.

For $12 including shipping this is a great kit. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants his or her own cunning Jayne Cobb hat. Thank you Tvini!

Awww! Thank you so much! I have to add, though, that after I sold a few I went back with a calculator and realized that it was actually costing me slightly more than $12 to sell them.

Oops.

So now it's $15.

Good tip on the finished product - that should be front and center. I'll rework it and try to find a little extra room. :) I really appreciate your kind words!

Even at $15 it's still a steal. I'd have to buy 3 skeins of $7 yarn to make it (or $$more?), and then worry that they yarn and the pattern will work well, since I'd have to scavenge a pattern off the net.

Steve was so thrilled and impressed. And may I say that I laughed my ASS off at your journal entry today, about the movie theatre people and what they said? *snicker*

OK, I just had to go read tvini's journal entry after you wrote that and I too literally laughed out loud when I read that too! :)

I checked out your site and (not sufficiently caffeinated, I supposed) could not find a link to order the kit. I know I can't get it in time for hte movie, but I have a friend who wants one. Where do I order this?

Heh. It's not you, I'm not set up for patterns yet. You can paypal me $15 to wearwithstyle at gmail dot com.

The kit has pattern with helpful tips, pompom, stitch markers, and yarn enough for a 23" circumference head - that's the size most people pick when I'm doing them to order. The stitches used in the pattern are knit, purl, and k2tog (knit two together).

You'd need a 16" circular size 10 1/2 needle, a set of double-pointed size 10 1/2 needles, and a tapestry needle. If you don't have those things, I can pick them up from my local yarn shop and pop them in your package, and you can reimburse me for that cost.

If you've got questions, my mailbox is always open! :)

I'm looking forward to the pattern and pompon I ordered today. Tvini graciously understood that I would go to one of the lower levels of hell if I did not spin & dye the yarn myself. I'm thinking a nice merino / alpaca blend...

When, precisely, does Jayne actually wear the damn hat?

He wore it in the episode when they went and got mail from the space station. He got mail from his mom, and Mal and Zoe got a dead body in the mail (old war buddy mailed himself to them).

The episode is called 'The Message'. It was never aired, so it's only available on the DVD set.

Ah. That would be one of the ones I didn't see on Sci-fi last night.
