Book Review?
Does anyone use The Big Book of Knitting? Good, bad?

I think I'm going to buy it because it looks good, but I want other opinions...

I have it. It's a pretty good general guide for a beginner or early intermediate knitter, I think. I still pull it out sometimes for help on trickier things I can't remember or don't know.

Hrm... I consider myself an intermediate to advanced knitter in most areas, but the short term memory of a rabbit. Thanks for the comment!

I have it. It's pretty decent in terms of showing you a WIDE variety of different approaches and has some great tips for solving common beginner-intermediate problems. I think it can be unnecessarially complicated in places though... there's a lot of shaker knitting and a kitchner stitch cast on for their socks that's simply insane and confusing. So I guess it gets a lukewarm review from me.

The kitchener stitch cast on is great!

Well, not really great, its a pain to do, but I don't find it confusing at all and I like the results.

I find the book pretty good about a variety of things, but it doesn't help you if you run into specific problems. I'm certain that the section on shaker knit selvedge is wrong because I've tried to do it, and it didn't come out right, and I've tried asking around the LJ as well as locally at knitting shops. BTW, does ANYONE know how to do the shaker knit selvedge. I'm still looking for it.

When I run into a problem I pull out all my knitting books and look up the answer in each one so it's hard for me to pinpoint how much this particular book has helped me. I do know I really appreciate the clear color photographs, most knitting books rely on b&w drawings to illustrate something. The section on zippers is especially enlightening. I think it's a good supplement to other books but I agree with some of the opinions posted on amazon.com, it's not the first and last knitting book you'll ever need. (It's not like many books can claim that anyway.)

I have this book as well but feel If i run into real knitting problems I start pulling out my books such as Knitting in Plain English, and Knitting for Dummies. I am just an advanced beginnner. I do love all the advanced techniques and colorful pictures that are available in the book. I would rec to buy it. You will need it.

It's terrible! it looks pretty in the store but it doesn't explain things well at all -- don't waste your money!!! there are so many book out there that are better than that. I bought it and it's been completely useless -- the instructions are hard to follow -- it sucks!!!!

It really doesn't explain things well. I bought it a few years ago and rarely crack it open simply because it just ends up confusing me.

You might want to try the ultimate knitter's guide by Kate Buller. Easy to navigate and understand.
