Some months ago I stumbled across old downloadable issues of the HolQeD somewhere on the net... unfortunately I have misplaced the link and cannot find it anymore, not even on Google. Does anyone know where I can find it?

Many thanks in advance...

An ungrammatical but canon phrase? [Jun. 18th, 2009|11:07 am]

[Dotlh | confused]

Hi there,

SkyBox Trading card #13 has a Klingon sentence on it, which seems ungrammatical to me, although it shouldn't be, as it's canon and written by Marc Okrand. This is the sentence:

qorDu' SaHlu'chugh 'ej matlhlu'chugh vaj wa' tlhIngan ghob potlhqu'.

It's losely translated with "[...] devotion and loyalty to family is one of the most important Klingon virtues."

See this sentenced in interlinear glossing behind the cut )

Thus, literally: "If someone cares about the family and if someone is loyal, then one very important Klingon virtue." — where's the verb?
It can't be potlh, because if it were, it should precede the subject. And it's highly unlikely that it's in clipped Klingon.

So is this simply a mistake and something like 'oH is missing at the end or did I overlook a minor aspect of Klingon grammar?

Could we understand globalization as "an increasing mutual influence between countries"?

In other words, could we call globalization Sepmey SIghchuqchoHghach?

While in AZ last week, a videographer interviewed me for a forthcoming podcast.

It seemed like a great opportunity to plug my new novel, in Klingon of course:

Nuqneh! I am new to this community so I am starting with a request. Guys I need some help. I help run Geek Media Expo (which would be sooooo cool to have as many Klingons there as possible) in Nashville. It is an offshoot of MTAC (Middle Tennessee Anime Convention) which is a huge anime convention. But we are getting back to our roots and doing a general fandom con. The convention runs from October 2-4. Here is the website:http://whatisgmx.net/ . Updates should start happening in the next week or so. But here is the thing, and I am throwing this out into the community, what would you like to see in a 2009 Trek track? I don't want to do a marathon of episodes because we have all seen Wraith of Khan or Trouble with Tribbles a quazillion times or have the boring panels of my ship is better than yours or my captain can beat up your captain. I am not saying that video or panels are out, but I think its time to modernize the Trek con experience. Let me know what you would like to see new or re-hashed in a new way.  Now remember this is a MTAC (www.mtac.net) operation and while MTAC is huge, GMX is like starting a con from scratch. So we can't do all in the first year. Lemme know.

Lord's Prayer [Mar. 18th, 2009|07:15 pm]

I tried looking for the Lord's Prayer in Klingon, but couldn't find it. So having no other source, I tried translating it myself, though I'm not all that good at the language yet. Does anyone know if there's a better translation out there? If not, here's what I came up with; does it look decent?

I'm wanting to record an answering machine message in Klingon, & am wanting help w/the translation. The message I want is basically, "What do you want? If this is a bill-collector, then I don't have any money. If it's a sales-person, then I still don't have any money! But, if it's friend or family, & it's important, then leave a message. Otherwise, leave me alone!"

Help, please!

We've all been waiting a long while for this to happen, and now that it has, please help us get the word out. Visit the EARTHLINGS website, where you can download one or more of the banners, and post them to your own website, blog, etc.

Thoughts on tlhIngan Hol [Nov. 26th, 2008|11:25 am]

qob
Hey I mostly lurk here, but thought that my reflections might be interesting. I am deep in rehearsal for the Klingon Christmas Carol.
I was one of the translators and was in the first production as well, so I think I have a decent idea of tlhIngan Hol as a spoken language.
It seems to me that as with many foreign languages the main difference is in how you use your mouth and sinus cavities to pronounce words. For me, as a Midwestern American, English pronunciation is mostly in the front of the mouth, with my tongue mostly sitting in the bottom of my mouth, occasionally touching the back of my front teeth. tlhIngan Hol seems to come from the back of the mouth with the tongue resting at the top of my mouth, usually staying on the back of my teeth. Also English is a "dry" language spoken lightly without vibration or expectoration unlike tlhIngan Hol.

I have to tell you  it is really interesting working to speak it correctly and conversationally, one of our new actors remarked, "You always sound angry when speaking Klingon." This isn't really true when you get comfortable with it, but I can definitely empathize with that sentiment.

klingon tattoo. [Nov. 1st, 2008|02:03 pm]

justanemotion
i'm getting a star trek tattoo next month for christmas, and i've settled tentatively on my design (although the classic starfleet insignia is temptingt). I want to get Klingon writing behing my right ear.

I've come acros this as Qapla' and think it would be a very appropriate design. I did however want to check with some experts that the translation was correct. So naturally I thought of livejournal lol.

I was also keen to know if anyong would be able to accurately translate 'to understand life, endure pain'. It would be my ideal Klingon tattoo but I am unsure of how accurately it can me done, or if it translates well.

Thank you for anyhelp at all you might give me, and I shall post the result when I get it. Cheers!

2 translation questions [Sep. 15th, 2008|05:52 pm]

What is the correct way to say speak about ABC with XYZ in Klingon? My guess would be XYZ-vaD ABC jatlh, but I'm not too sure.

And the second question: can anyone of you come up with a nice word for the English digest? I thought a while about it and my idea was tlholHa'moH (lit. make unraw), but I'm not too happy with that.

Hope, someone can help. Thank you!

More from Maltz [Jul. 28th, 2008|11:43 am]

[Dotlh | chipper]

Dr. Marc Okrand, creator of the Klingon language, put in an appearance (as he usually does) at this year's qep'a'.

On Sunday morning, as things were winding down and people were leaving, he revealed a new word from Maltz.

wIlpuq - pudding

Later that day, as Marc was driving home from Pennsylvania, he was caught in a torrential rain storm. Somehow, because of the downpour Marc was able to link up with Maltz, question his Klingon informant some more, and obtain a second term. Alas, the rain ended before more could be wrenched from Maltz.

Marc emailed me with this additional bit of tlhIngan Hol last night (I choose to think of this as a birthday gift from Maltz). Marc asked Maltz about how to say "digress." I'll quote directly from Marc's email now:

"He wasn't aware of a single word for that, but he said there's a commonly used phrase: DoS chIl. So I digress would be DoS vIchIl. And so on.
