A Klaus Nomi community! Hooray!
If you've found your way here, you're obviously interested in Klaus Nomi. Maybe you've been tuned in through a friend or perhaps you just saw the name and some little tid-bit somewhere and became intrigued.
Klaus Nomi was born Klaus Sperber in Germany. There is no recorded birthdate for him, though surviving relatives estimate he was January 24, 1944. He was a singer whose musical background was largely based in the operatic arias of Maria Calas, though early rock music did occasionally find him.
In the 1970s, he emmigrated to the United States for voice training and to find a life beyond Germany. Around the time of New York's punk hey-day, he became a pioneer of what would soon become known as "New Wave" with a unique introduction of his classical training into catchy little pop-like melodies. His biggest pockets of fans at the time were in New York city, Akron, Ohio; Madison, Wissconsin and Japan.
Tragicly, his life and career were cut short when he discovered he had the "gay cancer" or "GRIDS (Gay-Related Immuno-Deficency Syndrome), the virus which would soon become known as HIV (the virus which often leads to AIDS). He died on August 6, 1983.
Regardless, his memory lives on through his music and through rare but well-circulated performance footage, including a guest spot singing back-up for David Bowie on Saturday Night Live, a featured spot in the vintage New Wave film, Ungh! A Music War and cherished home movies which were respectfully showcased in the 2004 documentary the Nomi Song.
