**headdesk** FAIL [Jul. 25th, 2008|11:09 pm]

jinx_victim
[mood | disappointed]

*cough* So.

I take it I'm not the only one who failed miserably this month.

I'm not terribly surprised, but I am very disappointed with myself. There are a few reasons I failed, I think.... not least was that, in setting the bar at 75k, I subconsciously figured that I'd fail and that, since the bar was so high, that was okay.... and then felt absolutely no motivation. It was like, since I had mentally decided that failing was a perfectly fine result, I had no real reason to succeed.

Also didn't help that Sick Bacchus is sitting here unfinished. I really should have just set myself to finishing that and left the idea of another novel alone.

At any rate. I'll have to get NaNo '07 finished before October so I can devote myself properly to NaNo '08.

How'd everyone else go?

Ugh. End of term kicking my ass. Barely able to string a sentence together. Over 6000 words behind schedule.

Will have productive holidays? Want now, please.

Some progress [Jun. 27th, 2008|11:36 pm]

mattcowens
Slightly less than the target for the day, but we're coming in to the weekend, so it should be easy to catch up, maybe even get a few hundred words ahead :-)

I am so looking forward to the school holidays! One more week to get through then it's two weeks with no classes! (just a huge pile of marking to wade through)

Slow beginnings [Jun. 26th, 2008|08:19 pm]

jinx_victim
Well, I'm off to a crappy start! My main character began in a dungeon. I have no idea why he's there but it doesn't really matter. I was going to have him resourcefully escape, but it turns out I write a mean dungeon, so the only way out was hideously contrived.

So I whited out that bit and decided he would be saved by a werewolf. Yup. ^_^ It's still kinda hard going. I'm starting to wish I'd planned it like an hour in advance or something, rather than just starting to write and hoping for the best. No matter. With luck I'll get into the swing of things sooner rather than later.

Hoping to hit 3,334 by the end of today. (Fingers crossed.)

Haven't done too much on my other novel. I was kinda out-of-synch with the style and characters so I've been reading over a few chapters (and editing as I go) to hopefully get me back into its groove. So nothing more written on that one yet. However, jumping from one to the other is rather refreshing.

Yay! okgo! [Jun. 25th, 2008|12:39 pm]

Splee! ^_^ Glad to see a couple of others have joined in!

(I've also conned a friend of mine, and possibly my aunt, to join in as well.)

Now, my current plan is to:
- Write around 20,000 words of fiction to hopefully finish my current novel
- Write 50,000 words of fiction of a new novel.

I know my usual 50,000 word goal is entirely possible, but I haven't tried 70,000 before, especially on two different novels. So this is new territory and it's possible that I am doomed to failure. But I shall persevere! If nothing else, I REALLY want to get "Sick Bacchus" finished this month.

So, word counts as they stand on Day One, before writing begins:

(Yeah, I know, that bar looks a little cheat-ery to me too, but it was easier than chopping my novel into two different word files.)

Count me in. [Jun. 23rd, 2008|07:02 am]

sokky
Yeah I reckon I'll give it a go this year. I've encouraged my J to give me my laptop back and set his computer up properly! So that should help :)

Also have been inspired by not getting into the show I wanted to get into - but it will free up my time! So Kiwinowrimo, here I come. After last year's 10,000 word FAIL, I would like to see myself approach a wee bit closer to the target.

I  will be writing something for kiwinowrimo.  I think I'm much less likely to succeed than last year (having a 6-month-old son around the house takes up a lot of energy and time, and is incredible rewarding), but it'll still be good to have a clear goal to work towards.

I might attempt something modern, about teenagers, with a technology flava.  So basically what I did last year, but with intrigue instead of soap opera melodrama :-)

Where is the love, people? [Jun. 11th, 2008|12:05 am]
darksonfollower
There was such fury for this event last year....

2 weeks to go till the launch and I have this feeling that it's just going to be me and jinx_victim going for it, this time round. But prove me wrong.

Don't be put off by the 50,000 number people, It's a totaly do-able goal. I figured it out last year and its not that many words a day.

I have a few transcripts that hit the mark on my hard drive from last year....None of them are mine but I gave up too soon last time and didn't have a solid story and am going to give it a real go this time round and learn from my mistakes.

So come on, step forward and throw your hat in the ring. If your not keen tell your literary friends.

Call for Writers: Fairy Tales for real girls/women [Feb. 19th, 2008|02:13 pm]

debzter
I’ve been toying with the idea of organising and editing a collection of short stories.  The overall concept is to write fairy tales that feature interesting, whether admirable or flawed, female characters who are the heroes of their own stories.  I want to include stories that fit into the broadest possible interpretation of the fairy tale genre: dark, humorous, modern, traditional etc.  I prefer the idea of original stories with original characters as there are many revisionist fairy tales out there already but if someone has a great idea for a spin on a traditional tale or character, than that’s great.

My ideal timeline would be to have a writers meeting in the middle of the year (around June) for everyone to meet and read the stories as a group (whether first drafts or polished versions) in a spirit of mutual praise, support and constructive criticism/suggestions.  Anyone who wanted to be included in the project but couldn’t attend the meeting could email me their stories.

A deadline for finished versions of the stories would be set for two months after that meeting.

Guidelines:
1. Absolutely NO naïve waifs or victimised princesses as main characters.  Protagonists can be any age or species but any happy endings must be the result of the protagonist’s actions not merely being rescued by a Prince Charming type or any Fairy Godmother cheesiness (although the latter would be fine in a tale told from the point of view of a Fairy Godmother.)

2. Editorial preference would be given to tales with female protagonists although I can see how stories could have male protagonists and still be in keeping with the tone of the collection.  For example a tale about Prince Charming being fed up with rescuing Princesses and finding true love with the strong and financially independent Blacksmith, Gertrude Strapping, would be entirely in keeping with the project.  Obviously it is open to authors of either gender.

Comment if you are keen to be involved in the project or have further questions or thoughts.

First rejection? [Oct. 13th, 2007|10:53 am]

mattcowens
I am now the lucky recipient of what just may be the first rejection letter for a kiwinowrimo novel! I sent off the first three chapters + synopsis about 7 or 8 weeks ago, and this week I got the 'no thanks' letter back.

Next step - actually finish the second draft (I'm only about a third of the way through) and send it off to the next publisher on the list :)

How's the editing going? [Jul. 31st, 2007|07:17 pm]

mattcowens
Well, it's just about one week on from kiwinowrimo (at least, I think it is - if so, it's one of the longest weeks ever, since it feels like kiwinowrimo was months ago). How's everyone going with finishing their novels, rereading and editing?

I have fixed up the first 3 chapters of what I wrote, added a covering letter and a synopsis, and sent it off to a publisher today. I figure by the time I hear back I should be at least half way through editing :)

How are y'all getting on?

Its a long way off 50,000 but I'm well on the way to crafting a novel that had previously been mostly swimming around in my head. Researching my idea has been huge. I've learned about a lot of things relating to folk lore, hay bale building, Christchurch, life in prison for Maori, rail way pottery, guitars and much more. Its been awesome.

I really hope I can put my head down now and finish up the story having got one and a half chapters in.

Its been fun to share this - to watch people achieve their goals, or get close, or not! :) - and to generally share the camaraderie. A big thanks to the folks who set this up.

For those of us who are not finished is it still possible to post counts, can we keep track of what happens with our finished projects, and encourage/ support anyone who wants to try for publication???
