arrest photography [12 May 2009|08:59pm]

just_dead_gone
hello, it's been a while since I signed up for membership, and me more like a silent reader.

today, I posted an entry in another community, which I want to link, here, too. I'm not sure if the picture I'm looking for is Kip's, but perhaps someone here can help me to verify and has a link to the original?

thank you very much =)

SCHIZOPHRENIA [01 Nov 2008|09:04am]

alexgardener
I just wanted to recommend to anyone interested in studying this case and trying to determine just what really happened. You have to go to the heart of the matter itself. Schizophrenia. A very powerful and (unfortunately) in some ways, a crippling condition that is not always undertstood by the layman.

Some examples of information relevant to note:

To meet the diagnostic criteria for schizophenia (as layed out by the DSM-IV, which virtually the "Bible" of mental illness defintions) ... one must possess DELUSIONS (which are false beliefs) and HALLUCINATIONS (seeing or hearing things that aren't really there). Yes, that is a broad interpretation, but it is a start. I would suggest reading more up on this disease itself and you will see ... very clearly, closely, and succinctly just how Kip's own behavior and writings over the years from age 12 (when symptoms really started) up to 15 (when the tragedy at Thurston High occurred).

There is a very detailed and interesting book called:

"SURVIVING SCHIZOPHRENIA" by E. FULLER TORREY, M.D.
5th EDITION
NOW FULLY REVISED & COMPLETELY UPDATED
A MANUAL FOR FAMILIES, PATIENTS, AND PROVIDERS
THE INDISPENSABLE GUIDE TO TODAY'S MOST MISUNDERSTOOD ILLNESS

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in really learning about the subject. It  was very useful and informative. One point in particular that was a significant part of the situation at the time; Kip was diagnosed as having "Major Depression" by Dr. Hicks ... well, the other explains that oftentimes Schizophrenia IS mistaken for that.

Another, and final, suggestion is to watch the brilliant, touching film "A Beautiful Mind" ... based on a true story ... which shows very vividly what it's like to be experiencing the onset of hallucinations and delusions and having difficulty thus functioning in society and with loved ones around him (the main character portrayed brilliantly by Russell Crowe ... who smoothly gets across the facial and bodily behavior by one who is feeling tense, agitated and paranoid). Obviously, Schizophrenia is not black-and-white and people react very differently (depending on the circumstances) ... but I felt watching this was an educational exercise as to just how difficult and painful it is to walk through life afflicted by that.

Hope my words here are useful. Fond regards to all members.

Update! [25 Oct 2008|06:29pm]

shady_heaven

Hey, just a quick update to keep everyone informed.

The SID I listed IS correct, and I got through to Kip.  I just got another letter from him in the mail today, the first I received since the transfer!

In short, the first year has been difficult for him, and he's had to make a lot of adjustments.  But he did say that he'd made some good friends throughout it all, and that things were getting better now.  So at least we have some good news!

Hello & some words .... [01 Mar 2008|06:28pm]

alexgardener

Hello, to all other members out there in the Kip Kinkel Community! I'm quite sure that all of you have different reasons for being here, as this very complex case affects in many many ways. I'm basically a newbie to the LJ world and figured I'd share some of my own thoughts on the board.

I've read the various group entries and found the debates/discussions to be highly interesting. This is clearly a controversial that will bring out many degrees of emotion, depending on your personal viewpoint (and/or connection to the case).

First of all, I have delved into various sources of research as to the events that transpired on May 21, 1998 (as well as before and after). This includes court-related testimony and news articles. Many news stories are floating around and not every time do the facts hold up. I think there is almost like an unspoken pact within the media, in the event of a tragedy, to ward off fear to labelling a person (in this case a school shooter) as belonging at a certain type, personality, background and interests. But, it's not that simple because most clear-thinking individuals will recognize that people are different.  You can't place all the school shooters together in one group, like the X-Men or something, and expect unity. Who knows, they might have even disliked each other!

What is clear is that from a very early age, Kip Kinkel was troubled. Diagnosed with a learning disability (had difficulty spelling and tying his shoes). His parents were older, and they had alot of expectations from him as a student at Thurston (due to the fact they were well-respected teachers there at one time), and also his older sister was very successful academically and well-adjusted socially). He acted out in school, with peers, and by himself (using explosives) but this could be traced to his clinical-major depression (as recognized by Dr. Hicks). His interest in guns, as well as explosives, could also be looked at more closely and understandably (in layman's terms) by what was reported by Dr. Bolstad and Dr. Sack at the pre-trial hearing (he suffered from Paranoid Schizophrenia, which harbored delusions and halluncinations).

Kip started hearing auditory hallucinations (voices) at age 12. This would include commands. Not easy to believe or understand, but medical research has shown it to be a true component of schizophrenia. This, in turn, explains (as Kip later recounted to authorities) why we did what he did on the events on May 20-21. As the medical experts said, when you can't locate a rational reason, find an irrational one. Not to mention a neurologist conducted a brain scan (Dr. Konkol) and concluded Kip had abnormalities/holes that caused an impairment with logical thought control/planning. And, a private investigator had discovered that mental illness was existent on both sides of Kip's parents' family tree.

It is also significant that, unlike most recognizable school shooters, Kip had no targets picked out. He did not know the names of the people he shot. When he was caught with a gun the day before the Thurston shootings, he admitted to authorities that he had it (in his locker) and later (to his friends on the phone) that it was wrong and he didn't plant to use it. Read Dr. Bolstad's testimony in particular and he explains that an incident (delusion) with a roadside encounter (with another individual) caused Kip great stress and felt the need to get another gun (which he did that day from a fellow student) in order to self-protect. His thoughts about the world made him angry and confused. All these factors constituted a psychotic break, which lead to the violence itself.

I'd like to also mention that my heart goes out to everyone that was affected by this tragedy. It is so beyond words at this point, but suffice it to say, that my personal research has caused me to UNDERSTAND (not CONDONE) what had taken place at the hands of Kip Kinkel. However, it is also a tragedy that Kip's own life was forever changed and cut short but the actions he had done. I think it is sad, reading that by all accounts he is an intelligent individual who had a real capacity to want to learn/grow was not able to see that through. But, it is really something to read that he has adjusted (as well as can be expected) during his time at MacLaren and now transferred to the State Facility. Obviously, it cannot be easy and there are probably good days and bad days. I must say it is rather impressive to hear that Kip has made a conscious effort to come to terms with his past, stick to therapy and medications, complete his education, and remain behaved.

I hope that those who survived this and are still around are able to have full, meaningful lives. I also hope that Kip himself (despite the grim odds) is able to carry on with hope and will to see another day. The chance that he could make a positive difference in the world around him, a world it seems has accepted him as one way and turned its back, and show that he is capable of alot more than previously thought. Personally, I think mental illness is a very serious issue that warrants more compassion and understanding. Only when we allow our young and old to feel that they will be safe and comforted and not rejected, will there be a real chance to get help for those people and perhaps prevent another Kip Kinkel case from unfolding. That would be a good thing.

To all other members, I greet you with fond wishes and welcome any comments and questions you'd like to add. It is very kind of you and fortunate to Kip that you reach out the way you do. I also feel that each day is a learning experience that must never stop.

Hi everyone.

I just discovered this website and this information, It's really hard to take it all in, and I'm a little confused by what had happened. But school shootings and voilence is interesting to me, it's something I have a strong opinon about, so if anyone would have any extra information about kip or infact any school shooting, (besides Columbine, i am very well aware of that specific school shooting) please post something here. I wont be adding anyone because my journal is rather personal, but, I'll be coming here frequently to check and post things, thanks!

I Got Another Letter From Kip... [29 Dec 2006|01:33pm]

shady_heaven

...and to anyone out there who may be thinking of writing him, now is the time.  Kip will be turning 25 in 2007, which means he will be transferring to an adult prison.  That's been on his mind a lot lately, and he's understandably nervous, so he could use some kind words and support about now.

Has anyone written to any school shooters besides Kip Kinkel? (Luke Woodham, Michael Carneal, etc.)
If so, have they replied? If not, would you ever consider it, or are you just interested in Kip? I just wrote a letter to Luke Woodham and I want to know if he replies, and if he does what his letters are like. Sorry if this is a little off topic!

Kip Kinkel Wrote Me Back!!! [29 Sep 2006|08:39pm]

shady_heaven
[ mood | indescribable ]

HE WROTE BACK!!!

And relatively fast, too!

Right now I am giddy with excitement; I can barely talk! ^_^

His letter was about a page long and handwritten in what I would call not-overly-horrible-but-not-the-best penmanship. I wouldn't feel right relaying what he wrote word for word here, but the gist of it is that he is doing well, keeping optimistic, and hasn't gotten into any fights.

Also, some interesting facts Kip shared about himself:

"Underworld" and "Underworld 2: Evolution" are among his favorite movies at the moment.

His favorite color is black, although he is not gothic. ( To paraphrase his own words )

The way he talked in his letter, I get the impression that Kip loves getting mail from compassionate, understanding people. He even encouraged me to write back!

Hey.  New here.  I came across information on Kip one day when I was researching the Columbine killers. Ever since I've been learning everything I can about him.  Something about his case really fascinates me.

I won't ask the clichéd address question, since all I need to do is scroll down, but has anyone actually heard from Kip lately? The last post here was made months ago, so I'm just wondering if he still replies to his mail, and what my chances of getting a reply would be if I were to write him.

Hello.

I was just wondering if anyone had Kip's address?

JUST KIDDING. I swear reading back in entries someone has asked that question in EVERY post almost!! Jeez. Don't worry, I'll look it up myself!

What I really posted wanting to know was what do you write to Kip about? You don't have to tell me anything specific, just general.

Huh... well, since there hasn't been ANY posts here since October, I figure I'll try to get some kind of life back in here.

Back in June of '05, I went up to Oregon and went to Springfield and Woodburn - back when I posted photos of it in the original post, they were HUGE (like, 1000x1000, that kind of huge), not dial-up friendly at all. I forgot that I left the pictures that huge, and, while I was going through them on my computer I realized I left the pictures here all huge and such. SO, basically, here are the photos I posted awhile ago in a smaller, very dial-up friendly size.

I'm thinking of making up a little photo album for a Christmas present for Kip. I live in a coastal town in Australia so I should be able to get some really nice photos of the ocean & beach, pretty sunsets & all that jazz associated with the beach.

Just thought I'd post about it, give myself a little motivation to get off my ass seeing as I'm a lazy bitch +lol+

strange dream [11 Aug 2005|09:12pm]

[ mood | sleepy ]

This is just for fun purposes only. But has anybody here had dreams about Kip Kinkel. I just had one a few nights ago. I was having pizza with him and there were these drugs dealers (nothing really conflict wise). And it took me a while for me to realize that it was Kip because I kept thinking that he was a college friend of mine. WEIRD!!!

Anywho, that's all I got. I wrote to Kip near the end of April but I never got any response. I think it's because I gave him my dorm address instead of my home address (dont want my parents seeing that I got a letter from a correctional facility) but this was near the end of the school year and I have no clue if where or when the university would forward mail with an old address on it, bleh.

Just wondering... Are there specific things that you cannot send Kip? Are CD's out of the question? I read that photographs are all right. What about things such as candy? Soap? I know that might sound weird... Is he still at MacLauren? I'm thinking of writing to him.

And, by the way, has anyone ever told Kip about this community when they wrote to him?
