the shortest way: electronic alternative rock?

(can't think of something better atm, i need sleep XD)

besides i would just link some websites and let your friend listen to some songs ;)

I aggree- it's important to say it's got electronica. If your friend listens to The Cure and Depeche Mode and The Smashing Pumpkins, say it's a combination of the three?

haha, I always have that problem too!
I used to just call them "Electronica" but tech that wouldn't be hard enough for them... and electro-rock is kind of pansy-esque/british(;
so i generally just tell them to listen to it and find out themselves.
but i'd definitely agree with the "electronica alternative" title.

i usually either give the short answer "they kinda sound like those british new wave bands, sort of" (tho most ppl who like em now were just born when new wave was popular, so who knows if that's a good reference point....there's the longer more flexible version goth/punk/new wave/alternative-ish LOL
or you can just quote reviews like this one:
Equipped with cryptic, dreamy lyrics and a femme lead singer, the "new wave-ish" pop band Kill Hannah evokes memories of Meat is Murder stickers on my high school locker and staying up late to watch new Cure videos on MTV's 120 minutes. Kill Hannah (Update) In fact, with their tight rhythms, driving guitars and faux British accent, this babyfaced Chicago quintet is not unlike the post-Japanese Whispers, pre Disintegration Robert Smith & Co
they really need their own genre, i think ;)

Their newer stuff I'd call electro-pop-rock

Throw goth instead of pop for their older stuff. Tends to suffice, methinks.

If Billy Corgan had David Bowie's child, and Robert Smith was the godfather.

"psychedelic power-pop electro rock and roll."

I'm not kidding.
