Kids in the Hall spinoff shooting in the city this fall already seen?
Posted By JENNY POTTER, THE NUGGET
    Updated 16 days ago

More than 130 local actors auditioned this weekend for a chance to act alongside members of the Kids in the Hall in an eight part miniseries being shot in the city this fall.

The series, called Death Comes to Town is a narrative comedy that takes place in small town Canada and is set to air on CBC.

Project coordinator Lucy Veale said they had actors as young as seven and as old as 80 audition this weekend.

She said the turnout was great and most likely helped by North Bay’s already strong theatre community. She said the main roles will be filled with the Kids in the Hall, but the rest, most of which are speaking parts will be taken from those who auditioned this weekend.

They even found some unexpected talent among parents who had brought their children to auditions.

Patricia McVicars thought she left the television and film industry behind when she moved back to North Bay from Toronto a few months ago.

McVicars, who had spent 10 years working various jobs in film found herself at the auditions Sunday morning.

“It was so serendipitous,” she said. McVicars, who has worked on a variety of projects including Degrassi: The Next Generation as a tutor, was excited to see a project like this come to the city.

“North Bay has such a fine community of actors,” she said.

Though Jennifer Tocheri has acted in films before, she wasn’t getting her hopes up.

“This industry has a 90% failure rate,” she said.

Tocheri was bitten by the movie bug years ago after acting in student films in her hometown of Thunder Bay.

“I’m happiest on set and around creative people,” she said

Having recently lost her job, she jumped at the opportunity to be in another production.

If anything the experience is something she can take with her and help improve her skills.

“My goal is to take more classes and build my way up,” she said.

Kimberly Montgomery, 12, had her grandmother bring her to the auditions at Holiday Inn Express, Sunday morning. Though she was a bit nervous, the audition process is nothing new to her. She had already been to casting calls in Toronto for commercials and taken acting classes through her modeling agency.

Kimberly said she likes watching actors on television play different roles and wants to try it herself. Kimberly is inspired by singer and actress Miley Cyrus and said she often goofs around with her sister at home singing along to Hannah Montana songs.

The production will start filming in August and will wrap up in October.

“Instead of dressing up Toronto to look like a small town we decided to shoot in one, and North Bay is not far away,” Veale said.

Crews have been in North Bay this past week driving around the area scouting spots to shoot. They already have a few places in mind from Sturgeon Falls to downtown North Bay and in between.

Kids in the Hall star, Mark McKinney wins a comedy award.
    by Jennifer Cox

    Jun 15, 2009

Funnyman Mark McKinney of “Kids in the Hall” fame was the recent recipient of the Peter Ustinov Award for comedy, and he is currently working on creating a new hit show, “Death Comes to Town,” with former “KITH” alum Bruce McCulloch, Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald and Scott Thompson. Filming of the show, which will air as an eight-part miniseries, will begin in August, and the characters are said to be versions of the infamously hilarious personalities audiences came to love on “Kids in the Hall.”

“Death Comes to Town” will appear on CBC first, and McKinney has said that he has hopes that the show will later be aired in the U.S., having the potential to be one of the coveted Canuck gems to transcend television borders. "I think Canada does have, on a per-capita basis, a better tradition of pursuing those shows whose appeal is going to be narrow but deep, like ‘Kids in the Hall,’” he said in an interview with Canwest News Service. “They're shows that will be known and respected and re-watched."

McKinney said that comedy, more and more, will become a North American industry as opposed to two distinct ones (Canadian and U.S.). "When a critical mass of people stop going to the United States because the opportunities are here in Canada, we're going to see the sitcoms and the $300-million comedies," he said. "I mean, imagine if the next Mike Myers or Jim Carrey stays at home to do a $10-million comedy for a Canadian company that has a good distribution deal in the United States. Those types of things will start making a difference."

Mark McKinney first’s big “claim to fame” was starring on “Kids in the Hall,” which he followed up with stints on the shows “Slings and Arrows,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.”Look for “Death Comes to Town” sometime in 2010.

Kids In the Hall's McKinney joins Newhart, Ullman, Cleese as comedy award winner
Kids In the Hall's McKinney joins Newhart, Ullman, Cleese as comedy award winner

By Cassandra Szklarski – 1 day ago

BANFF, Alta. — Kids In The Hall member Mark McKinney says it's an "off year" for comedy.

How else to explain the decision to award the funnyman - known for creating such ludicrous characters as a sex-crazed chicken lady and a head-crushing grouch - the Peter Ustinov Award for comedy? "I just didn't think I was there yet, you know, wherever 'there' is," McKinney says of his surprise at being chosen for the annual honour.

"But I saw the, my God, the list of the other people who've won it, you know. It was really impressive."

Dave Foley voices elf in 2009 holiday special

    'Prep and Landing'
ABC has picked up Disney Animation's holiday spec 'Prep and Landing,' about a team of elite elves who prepare houses for Santa's arrival.

ABC has picked up the holiday special "Prep and Landing," the net's first program from sister Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Half-hour animated event revolves around an elite elves unit -- known as Prep and Landing -- that makes sure homes are ready for Santa's visit. Story centers on an elf (Dave Foley) who thinks he's about to get a promotion -- but instead is paired with a new recruit (Derek Richardson). The duo then go on their Christmas Eve mission, where they encounter unexpected challenges.

Sarah Chalke also provides a voice.

"It's all the humor you're used to seeing from the Disney animation and has great story appeal for adults," said Vicki Dummer, co-head of alternative series, specials and latenight at ABC.

John Lasseter is the exec producer, while Dorothy McKim is producer and Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton are the directors.

"Prep and Landing" actually came out of an initiative Lasseter launched when he first took over Disney Animation Studios. Lasseter asked animators to come up with ideas for shorts.

Later, during a meet-and-greet, ABC development execs took a look at the shorts and liked what they saw in "Prep and Landing."

"We were charmed by it and thought it was adorable," Dummer said. "Probably about five or six months later, Lasseter came in and pitched it as a television Christmas special."

"Bolt" director Chris Williams originally came up with the concept for "Prep and Landing" but then was too busy on that feature to take part in the TV special.

    share your kith moments...
Do you ever just randomly think of KitH quotes or situations?

I work in an office, and today I was looking through the supply cupboard for paperclips. I wanted to scream, "I'm just looking for PAPERCLIPS!" (I didn't.)

    Anyone else?

    Kevin
Kevin McDonald: you should see him walk against the wind. (SUPPLIED PHOTO)

Of all the Kids -- if you asked all the other Kids -- Kevin McDonald might just be considered the funniest.

"I've always thought that if you looked at all five of us, and you gave us categories -- who has the best timing, who does the best characters, who comes up with the best ideas -- that I would not be in first place in any of those categories," says Kids in the Hall cast member McDonald, who's in town this weekend to host the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival's late-night Saturday gala, Cradle to the Grave.

"But if you added up the points, there's a chance that I could get to be the funniest person. I can see why (the other Kids) might say that, because they've all got these other things that they do, and I'm just funny. They might be more skilled in certain areas; I'm just funny."

    Cash Cab
I was watching Cash Cab tonight and the question came up (and I'm paraphrasing here) "what was Canada's answer to SNL?" The people in the cab got it wrong (cos I thought it was SCTV, too) but the answer was Kids in the Hall! Since it was their strike 3, they got kicked out of the cab. Ben Bailey said "from Kids in the Hall, to kids on the street."
