Last Names...
Okay, I'm aware I'm gonna get massively disagreed with on this comment, but I hatehatehate fanbased last names.

Especially the dumb ones: "Sora Hikari", "Zexion Nomura", "Demyx Uematsu".

But seriously, guys.

"Roxas key"?

what the hell?

Okay, guys, since I was so prodded to do so, I actually read part of the fic.

It's only in it's first chapter, so it has promise. But I still found a lot of annoyances in it while ignoring the last name.

The writing was bland at best, mechanical in the way most fics are. Roxas is a british (though I saw the use of no british slang whatsoever) journalist, and it's extremely unrealistic in the fact he goes on a tyraid about how his writing sucks, including things like "dfjlasjdksfjl" and "wtf". Because those are things a semi-established british journalist uses, right?

But what really lost my interest was (even though the author claimed it was "crackish") the touch of unreality to it.

He whines to his mom about not having a boyfriend.

Clearly someone did not do their research. As close-minded as America is about being gay, the british are three times over. I have a close friend living near Manchester who has a very established family and they near shun him because he's bisexual. For a very long time, his father wouldn't even look at him for taking over the business until he 'proved his worth'.

Homosexuality is not something often tolerated, as far as all my researches and conversations go.

And, what futher annoys me, is how the author handled "their fic being attacked". They showed no class, no confidence in themselves to simply say, "Oh, well, someone didn't like it. That was bound to happen." and then tried to turn things on me to say I'm--what was the quote?--a "petty, talentless, insecure sonuvabitch".

I posted on a Kingdom Hearts Rant community, because I have a rant to be had. I was not only involving your fic, but the fics of people that are on my friends list and that have used surnames, too. One of my close writing buddies used 'Demyx Nomura' and 'Zexion Uematsu' (or vice-versa, whatever). Yet you don't see them popping out of the woodworks to say they were attacked, do you?

If you can't handle the fact that the only bad thing I said about your fic was "you used a silly surname that I don't like" and can't simply ignore me for that, then perhaps you shouldn't take your fanfics to public domain.

There is Keys (as a surname) but... I agree with you. That's seriously lazy writing.

Maybe I'm weird, but I perfer something that recalls Roxas' position like Roxas Thirteen (since there are not like alive thusly normal they could have unusual surnames, or even no surnames at all)

But that's just me.

"Roxas Thirteen" just ... wouldn't work for me.

They are given whole titles. Such as,

"Organization Thirteen Number Nine, The Melodious Nocturne: Demyx." [Juusan Kikan, kyuuban (not sure of this part), Yasou no Shirabe: Demikkusu]

I don't think they're really given last names because their Somebodies probably didn't have them either. The world of Kingdom Hearts just doesn't need them (aside from previous canon characters, like Cloud and Yuffie, and even then sometimes their exalted, like in the instance of Leon).

Maybe I'm just picky.

Pfft, why would you put that in the beginning. This community is made for expression of thoughts and ideas and YES, even opposing opinions. :P That said, last names make good for dramatic effect, but they're not really needed, I agree. X3 I'll admit to having used them in the past though (although I think Riku was the only one, because it was kind of important for him-- it was something about his family line, so. *shrug*), but now I just go "...eh. Fanbased last names, I hate them too, especially when the fans give them Japanese last names for no reason. (If I see proof that there's a fic going around that gave Luxord a Japanese surname, that writer needs to be set on fire, or attacked by 52 paper cuts.) I think the writers need to give all their characters last names so such a thing doesn't & never will happen again. Situations for characters with last names can be a pain for me as I have those said characters as Sims where they MUST have surnames. All I did was gave them a group name to fill in that blank; Orgy for the nobodies & Paopu for the Destiny Island Trio.

Also, "Sora Hikari" will confuse me in so many ways it's not even funny; and "Roxas Key," though while it can be stupid, it is a viable last name as mentioned in this thread & my last name happens to be similar to it.

I am guilty of that, but it is so hard to get rid of surnames, especially in an after-KHII setting that involves one hell of a long fic. I mean, they continue on with their lives, school, etc., etc... What do you suggest then?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]arson_attrition
2008-01-27 06:16 pm UTC (link)
I don't really think it's that difficult. The entire world of KHII seems to thrive just fine without the use of last names, so why can't fandom do the same?

I've made the comment before: rebirth, AU, and somebodies are really the only ways I can see surnames being used, and even then I don't think they're a necessity.

I've seen people use decent or legitimate last names for some of the characters. I've seen a Kairi Tenkou (tenkou = queen of heaven), and for some reason it worked. It sort of tied into the feeling of the fic, too, because Kairi was sort of a motherfigure in it.

Uh, your excellent addition made me laugh even harder, I'm sorry! Who on Earth told you that uh, "As close-minded as America is about being gay, the british are three times over."

Uh, allow me to say hello from Britain. Born and raised. My God, your ONE Manchester friend is right! God, we are all homophobes. Damn those gays! Damn them!

I don't even know if I should dignify your actual point with a response, but I will for the lulz. "Homosexuality is not something often tolerated, as far as all my researches and conversations go." Wow. I am impressed at your research. Obviously, no parent with a gay child would listen to them about anything, nevermind about their love life ESPECIALLY THOSE FUCKING BRITS GODDAMN THE BRITS AND THE GAYS!

I have plenty of class; in fact I'm rather proud and I love my fic. I do. I love it and if I had no confidence or if I thought you were any more than a petty, insecure, talentless sonuvabitch I would take it down and cry. I will not however, and instead I have laughed and made jokes because it is funny to me. You are funny to me. I may stomp my feet and pout but I'm laughing while I do it. I don't care about anyone else popping up on your flist; they are not me, they have nothing to do with me. If they choose to roll over then fine, that's them and this is me.

And if you knew anything or even read the fic properly you would see that Roxas in my fic is a struggling, fairly unsuccessful journalist and is instead thrown into the world of celebrity interviewing something which he finds cheap and useless. But he's an uninspired, fairly miserable man. Oh yeah, AND HE'S DRUNK!

Hahaha~! And I'm sorry if your obviously knowledgeable non-Brit brain didn't pick up on any British slang on my DIALOGUE FILLED (/sarcasm) first chapter/prologue.

"Speaking from a Brit, They obviously know NOOOTHING about British Society, or they were brought up in an extremely different household from what I've been, or what other people I know have been.

IF I were to tell my Auntie Grace that I was Bisexual she'd totally disown me. Not only that, but the mention of my gay friends Burned her ears when I talked to her on the phone. x.x"

This is coming from my girlfriend, who moved here when she was eight, but is still very in touch with her family and her home country. Plus the example I'd given you earlier.

"Obviously, no parent with a gay child would listen to them about anything..."

Are you gay? Do you have any gay friends? I seriously wonder, because this isn't something I've just noticed with you, but the whole yaoi community. Homosexuality isn't just a casual thing. Nearly the entire world is close-minded to it, and the way you wrote Roxas whining to his parents about having no boyfriend was just so unrealistic that it almost offended me on a personal basis.

Have you ever been there when someone's parents found out their child was gay? Things aren't peachy-keen afterwards. My family and I never were the closest things around, but I've been out for two years and my family still doesn't know how to react around me. Neither does my girlfriend's mom, and she's the only one she's even told. Like she said, most of her family would DISOWN HER.

And, I get it, that's not how it is in all cases. Maybe his parents have supergay!acception powers!!1!1one!

Because clearly you have plenty of class in calling me a "petty, insecure, talentless sonuvabitch" when you know nothing about me or my writing. After I'd made the post, I at least browsed the piece to find some worth instead of pointing silly names.

If you're so proud and love your fic, you wouldn't see my bone with your fannon last name as such a big deal or a "personal attack" on your fic. It wasn't that. It was my opinion on something fandom does that annoys me. You just so happened to be one of the thousands of examples.

"read the fic properly"? I couldn't get past the excerpt of Roxas's writing without being bored and scrolling.

It's extremely unrealistic. I'm gay, my parents know it and are relatively accepting, but I'm not about to talk to my mom about how much I need a girlfriend. I don't even like talking to her when my parents and I split up.

Of all my real-life gay friends (from all over central and other countries, too), none of them have ever felt comfortable talking to their parents about their relationship status.

Even heterosexuals aren't entirely comfortable talking to their parents about their relationships.

And, I'd get it if "he and his mom were really close!", but his Dad was there, too.

Futhermore, how in-character is it that Roxas whines?
