    I know, I know
Ren Fest does not equal Pagans, but I just moved to the area and I couldn't find a KC Pagan group here on LJ.

I am in need of a short, quick answer and hopefully someone here can help.

I am looking for someone to perform a hand-fasting ceremony (I've already picked the one I want to use) on Friday, April 10th in JoCo. Overland Park, specifically. Hook me up?

    Jim Gasser memorial
This was written by Danny Reardon, and passed to me by [info]nottygypsy. Posted here, with Danny's permission.

    No words.

    Okay, a few.

Those of us who knew him, each of us, I'll warrant, called him friend.

I don't like to wax about death. I wish that It be not proud. But this guy deserves those few words I can gather.

But oh, no. Not Jim. Not Jim.

We knew Jim well--or about as well as we could, seeing someone at a few shows a year. That my family and I thought the world of him would be something of an understatement. Though every phrase, every thought, seems old, tired, and far overused, this one is true--I have not known a kinder man. One who went out of his way to say hello, and chat for a bit. He always had time for everyone, it seemed, and especially for children, with whom Jim showed a patience and understanding that only a big kid himself can feel.

I know of no one--no one--who did not regard him highly. We all considered him a friend, because he made us all feel that way. His gifts of kindness and goodwill were extraordinary, usually found only in very old stories we don't suspect were ever true, in tattered old books about long ago times. But Jim was real, and for a very little while, he was here. He was one of the best people I have ever known--and I choose that well-worn phrase carefully. Here, with Jim, it is true, and bears repeating. Jim Gasser was one of the best people my wife, Beth, and I have ever known.

My son William adored Jim, and he always made William feel like a special kid. William's armory is a testament to Jim's skill molding his foam swords that he sold at all sorts of shows. And sold them he did--a nutty guy dressed up like a barbarian, walking around all over the place, saying hello in that piping, tenor voice that always seemed so discordant with the speaker's chiseled exterior.

As for me, I always felt honored each time he stopped to talk. Jim shined. What a great soul.

You know, we all often say many things, most of then badly worded, when someone passes--and I, too, struggle for the words. This was an injustice, on many levels I cannot truly comprehend. I'm both shaken and deeply saddened. I hope more than a few truly understand how much the world is diminished without Jim Gasser in it.

I greatly fear I shall not again meet anyone as genuine as Jim. We might all say we wish we knew him better, but you know, I think we did. I know I am better for having known him.

This sadness will stay with me for some time, I think. I hope, at this very least, I have done Jim some service. So should we all, for each other, long before the time to do so for one another has passed.

    FYI: Sales at Enchanted Gifts!
Enchanted Gifts at the Great Mall in Olathe is liquidating all cloaks, costumes, renaissance apparel and accessories. John says he's done carrying these items for good and is selling them up to 60% off to clear them out.

In addition, he's selling all books at a 15%+ discount for larger quantities. He typically has a variety of books on spellcraft and spirituality, so there may be great gift opportunities there.

Drive safely and enjoy the holiday shopping!

    Extreme Home Makeover-like help needed!

    Hey all,

Some of you may know Amanda Cherry-Haus from KCRF - she was the original Queen of Vulgaria a few years back, and played Fannie prior to that, and has since taken on various special events roles the last few years.  Her hubby is in the Army, and through him, she's gotten quite involved in helping with a myriad of veterans issues.  One veteran she's specifically helped is Sgt. Scott Stephenson...the short version of his story is that he was involved in an attack over in Iraq, most of the others in his unit were killed, and he survived but suffered many burns and is now paralyzed.  The army gave him "x" amount of money to help him handle the various bills, etc, and his ex-wife promptly ran off with the money.  He's been staying with his mother, and she's had to quit her job to take care of him, and for the last several months, they've been down in TX, where he's undergone a series of surgeries.

Amanda has been working hard to raise money to help Sgt. Stephenson, and has solicited help from various construction companies, had lots of labor and materials donated, etc, in an effort to redo his home so it's wheelchair-friendly.  Because of the massive amounts of burns he suffered, a whirlpool tub was needed to help restore circulation to his skin.  Tomorrow (Saturday, Dec 6) is the last day of construction before Sgt Stephenson and his mother are due to return home to their home in Atchison on Sunday, and Amanda's really needing some help in order to get things ready.  If you are free tomorrow and don't mind getting a wee bit dirty and sweaty, please read the note below, and give her a shout.

    Okay-

I am emailing everyone I can possibly think of asking for your help.  Saturday (tomorrow) December 6th is the final push toward getting Sgt. Scott Stephenson's home finished before our "reveal" ceremony on Sunday December 7th.  I need bodies!  I need anyone who can help lift, paint or hammer stuff!

For those of you who haven't heard about this project from me it involves doing a local version of "extreme home makeover" for a wounded soldier.  We did a big fundraiser for him back in July- and we've finally gotten the build underway.  The last minute final details before all the media coverage starts today and goes full force tomorrow so I'm in desperate need of help!

Anyone coming from the Kansas City area who needs to carpool with me please email me today and I'll make arrangements to get you there.  The build is in Atchison, Kansas... which is about an hour and a half away from me.  If you need the address and some rough directions email or call me today! (if you can help, please leave a comment and I'll get you her phone numbers.) I'll be in Atchison, so leave a message because my cell phone doesn't get coverage there.  I know a few of you have been up already this week- and I'm so grateful for your help!  But tomorrow is the chance to help finish this project so Scott can see it before he leaves on Sunday!

If you can make it- BLESS YOU- but wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty!  It's the final push to the end and we can use all the help we can get!

    Thank you-
    Amanda Cherry-Haus

    Thanks, everyone!

Faire a la Carte needs Front Gate help.
Faire a la Carte, the management team for the new Heartland Renaissance Faire in Shawnee, Oklahoma, is seeking Front Gate help for a new faire November 8 & 9.

If you're an experienced Renfaire worker, come out and play! We are the first thing patrons see, and the last people they'll interact with at the end of the day, so *we* set the tone for the Faire day.

If interested, please e-mail me at duane dot kc at gmail dot com. I'll bring the donuts!

    Thanks for reading!

    Ugh.
Damn, I actually had to moderate something.

I deleted those posts & marked them as spam.

    ::edited to add::

Sorry about the extra one -- the Bonnie Pirate Laddie missed the bus and I had to drive him to school. Marked the last one as spam as well, and have kicked the troll out of the community. Today was "learn how LJ's moderation controls work" day!

::hugs the real [info]duane_kc:: Sorry about that, man.

Weather update from near KCRF site
Hi gang! Bonner Springs still stands! Since we live 4 miles from faire site I thought I'd share the status of the world. We've had right at 4" of rain today and it's still falling. We were about 2 miles NE of a tornado touchdown. We personally had no wind damage and are currently not experiencing any leaks. Our road had water over it for a while about 5:30, the local "cricks" are all swelled but not yet flooded (as of 8:00pm). We drove past faire site at 7pm and, despite rumors to the contrary, the faire site stands. Apparently someone told my mom that high winds tore through the grounds and did a ton of damage. Not that we could tell from where we were but the lack of any leaves, twigs, trash, etc. anywhere tells me things are as they should be.

Wear your rain gear tomorrow, kids. It's gonna be one of *those* days.

ETA: Holy crap. It's 10:55 and we've had 1/4" MORE rain since the original post. Wow.

    Boots?
    Happy Friday everyone!

Anyone know where I might find cheap, pseudo-costume appropriate boots for women? [info]rehtaehmusic needs to get something to go with her new elven garb. Any ideas would be great!

If you will be at the KCRF Media Party tonight, then perhaps I will see you there!

    Be happy, healthy and whole!

All the Dragons have been slain
As many of you may know, the crew of Slay the Dragon, the ones that have been there forever and a  day, will no longer be slaying dragons for fun and profit. Due to the restrictions on the amount of employees  we can't have we can't have working this year , and still try to run the ride safely, we have left the employment of the games department.
I am currently seeking employment elsewhere in the faire.  I am an experienced shopkeep, CD wench and an award winning hawker.  If you have ever heard the melodious cry of "Slay the Dragon" across faire for the past 10 years it was me!
I CANNOT walk parade, but am willing to help anyone who will pay me, if I don't get a nibble on the job front I may try with Front Gate first weekend. Please help if you can.
You can reply here or privately at mistresangelfur@yahoo.com
