Katell Keineg May 1, 2009 The Living Room, New York City
After a little heming and hawing about whether I was up for the trip (it was Friday and it had been a long week), I decided at the last minute to go down to NYC to catch the rare gig by Katell Keineg and am sure glad I did. I dunno why I was even going back and forth about going -- music is all and Katell is nothing if not music.
Track 5 is new, I think, and she didn't mention the title. So rather than guessing, just leaving the name (and the tag on the flac) blank. If anyone happens to know, please fill us in.
Enjoy!

Y Gwyneb Iau/Trouble is being sold on Amazon MP3 (in MP3 Format 256 kbps) for $3.96 or each song for $0.99.
The EP has four songs and I like it, it's nothing like what I expected and I should have expected that. Jet was nothing like O Seasons and High July was nothing like the aforementioned.
1. Y Gwyneb Iau 2. Trouble 3. On Yer Way (Part Two) 4. You've Got a Tune Na-Na
Also, Katell puts the CD packaging together by hand (there's even a red string that you can use to hang it).
The actual CD (packaging and all) is IN STOCK at CDBaby.com for $10.00 plus shipping. They're fast - that's where I bought mine from.

Folks, we have another 4-track EP coming out. All I know is - that it has “On Yer Way” (the re-recorded Live version used on the soundtrack of Deborah Kampmeier’s indie film “Virgin”) and a Welsh-language cover of the Super Furry Animals song “Y Gwyneb Iau”. Maybe “Calenture” is the third song since it seems to be quite popular at her gigs.
The following is taken from the Official Katell Keineg Mailing List: _____________________________
Katell Keineg will be playing 3 dates in November at the Living Room in NYC:

Katell will be launching her new 4-track EP on November 7; it will be available for purchase at the NYC shows as well as iTunes. Stay tuned for more info!

Hi and Happy New Year.
Next week (Jan. 7-11) - I'll be reposting the media files I posted on Wednesday, November 14, 2007: http://community.livejournal.com/katell_keineg/130956.html
Remember - these files will only be online for seven (7) days.
Furthermore - I will NOT be reposting them any time soon. Don't ask me to repost them again next month or the month after that because I'm not going to do it. I'm on a 56K connection and the Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight show alone is going to take me close to two hours to upload.
Cheers. Victor

Hi all,
Katell is showing up on the KML Recordings label website under "KML ARTISTS" - I don't know if this is because she worked on their "B FOR BANG - Across the Universe of Languages" CD or because they are her new Label.
You can check it out for yourselves: http://www.kmlrecordings.com/artists/katellkeineg.html
Cheers and Happy Holidays, Victor
EDITED TO ADD:
I contacted KML recordings and they said the following:
"KML is not her new label and unfortunately, I have no further info regarding her future release."
Sorry folks.

Hi All,
Katell appeared on 'Other Voices - Songs From A Room' two years or so ago (Episode 7 which also featured Jerry Fish). Katell performed three songs and I posted the audio online earlier today: http://community.livejournal.com/katell_keineg/130956.html
I just found the video online but I haven't watched it yet since it wants me to update Realplayer and I can't upload a 12MB file right now.
Here's a link to the website: http://www.rte.ie/tv/othervoices/20070517otherv.html
For those of you out there with downloading software - here's a direct link to the file: rtsp://streaming2.rte.ie/2007/0517/othervoices7-150072-228.rm

3) Calenture (Rough Mix/Demo) taken on from July 6th, on Vin Scelsa's show "Sirius Disorder" on Sirius satellite radio. This isn't the version that I used to have up here - where Katell can be heard spelling out "Calenture" and talks about the meaning of the word before singing but for those of you who want to know - Calenture is a Hallucination that sea men commonly had at sea when they spent too much time on the waves - they mistook the waves for green rolling hills and tried to get off the boat.

6) ***THIS FILE WAS NEVER POSTED BEFORE*** Katell appeared on 'Other Voices - Songs From A Room' (Episode 7 which also featured Jerry Fish). Katell was presented by Glen Hansard (the Frames), and she performed three songs - I have included the audio below. Hi all,
Someone running a database about Jacques Brel's song "Ne me quitte pas (If you go away)" contacted me and asked if anyone here could possibly provide a "picture of this original CD cover (jpeg 500x500 pixels or more is fine)" for their database.
It is the CD single for Hestia, Elektra 66268-2 (1993), which includes the following tracks: - Hestia (SOL version) - Destiny's Darling ( live at Andrews Lane Theatre, Dublin) - Ne Me Quitte Pas (live at Andrews Lane)
I assume they want the front and back (which shows the tracklisting and information and dates).
If anyone has that CD single (I don't) - would you mind sending a photo of the front and back of it to me via email as an attachment? My email address is on the community user info page.
Thanks.

A Long Career on the Brink of Fame
NPR.org, January 10, 2007 When The New York Times Magazine did a feature story on Katell Keineg in July, it looked as though the singer-songwriter with the fervent cult following was finally getting a long-deserved break. The article quoted several well-known artists, including Natalie Merchant, as they talked about Keineg's talent. It documented her years of struggle after a short tenure on a major label. It told of the struggles faced by artists who don't catch on instantly, and who are often discarded by a business that can no longer afford to build careers one step at a time.
Those rooting for Keineg might have finished the article sure that this major exposure would change her situation — or, at the least, open some doors — but it hasn't happened yet. The Irish-born singer with the husky voice remains virtually unknown, and her three albums are hard to find. Spend a moment with Keineg's 1994 album O Seasons O Castles, and it's hard not to be puzzled by its failure to reach a large audience: Here are wildly inspired songs filled with literate and mystical images, songs that aspire to the sprawl and sweep of epic novels. These turn on unusual chord progressions ("Cut") and plaintive melodies ("Hestia"), as well as languid "what if" daydreams (the hypnotic "The Gulf of Araby," an extended meditation on the distance between "what is and what can never be.")
Though she can come across as overwrought at times, Keineg has a way of bringing listeners inside whatever emotional tableaux she's describing. The song could be a purely fictional account of a relationship in free-fall, but she never seems professionally detached from it: As Keineg alternates between gentle weeping whispers and enraged shouts, the pain sounds like her own — like it matters. Though it's messy and unresolved, it contains wisdom worth sharing.

Hi all,
This is a 32Kbps Windows Media Audio file of the Welsh song Katell performed (with an unidentified woman helping out on guitar and backing vocals) on Wedi 7. I think it's a cover of a Welsh song called "Y Gwyneb Lau," written by Super Furry Animals. According to the New York Times Magazine article (Her Lonely Voice), this song might make it on Katell's upcoming album.

CAFODD ei geni yn Llydaw, ei magu yng Nghymru, ac mae hi'n byw yn Nulyn ers blynyddoedd. Bu'n aelod o gast Pobl y Cwm am gyfnod, ond ei record hir gyntaf ddaeth ‰ hi i amlygrwydd byd-eang rai blynyddoedd yn ™l.
Caf odd yr albym "ï Seasons, ï Castles" - sy'n cynnwys fersiwn iasol o'r emyn "O Iesu Mawr" - dderbyniad da yn rhyngwladol, ac roedd darogan gyrfa lwyddiannus iawn i'r gantores-gyfansoddwraig.
Ond yn ™l rhai, nid yw wedi gwireddu'r potensial hwnnw - yn yr ystyr nad yw hi'n gwerthu miliynau o recordiau nac yn ennill ff ortiwn o'i gwaith. Ond nid arian yw llinyn mesur llwyddiant i Katell Keineg.
Mae ei pherff ormiadau byw yn chwedlonol bron - a hynny am ddau reswm. Mae'n gallu bod yn chwit chwat gyda'i pharatoadau ambell waith. Fel yr adeg pan gamodd i'r llwyfan o flaen 50,000 o bobl mewn cyngerdd U2, i ganfod nad oedd swn yn dod o'i gitar, am fod y batri wedi darfod. Dro arall, yn ™l pob s™n, bu'n rhaid iddi ofyn i aelod o'r gynulleidfa diwnio ei gitar.
Ond dydi cynulleidfaoedd ddim yn hir yn maddau iddi ar ™l clywed ei llais, a phrofi'r emosiwn a'r teimlad sy'n dod drwodd yn ei chanu. Mae hi'n byw ei chaneuon, ac yn byw i'w perfformio o flaen cynulleidfa.
Mae'n teithio'n rheolaidd yn America, ac Ewrop, a'r wythnos nesaf bydd yn dod drosodd i ogledd Cymru am daith fer, tair noson.
Roedd hi ar ei ffordd adref i Ddulyn ar ™l gig yn Cork pan gawsom sgwrs.
Dim ond unwaith o'r blaen y mae hi wedi perfformio yn y gogledd, meddai, a hynny yng Ngholeg Harlech flynyddoedd yn ™l, pan oedd un o'i ffrindiau hi yno.
Ond, fel plentyn yn Llydaw, byddai'n dod draw i Gymru bob haf, ac mae'n edrych ymlaen at ddod yn ™l yma.
"Yn blentyn bach, pan roeddwn i'n byw yn Llydaw, roedd fy nheulu i yn aros gyda ffrindiau Mam bob haf, llawer ohonyn nhw yn y gogledd, gan ei bod hi wedi mynd i'r coleg ym Mangor.
"Bydd y gogledd wastad yn wlad haf fy mhlentyndod i mi, a chyn gynted ag y byddaf yn dod oddi ar y llong yn Nghaergybi 'wy'n teimlo'n hapus!" meddai.
Symudodd Katell i Gymru i fyw pan oedd yn naw oed, ar ™l i'w mam a'i thad wahanu, a byddai'n treulio'r hafau yn Llydaw o hynny 'mlaen.
Roedd erthygl yng nghylchgrawn y New York Times yn gynharach eleni, yn awgrymu fod Katell yn byw o'r llaw i'r genau, ac nad yw wedi gwireddu'r potensial cynnar yr oedd pawb yn ddarogan ar ei chyfer.
Ond dywed y ferch a fagwyd ym Mhen-pedair-heol yn y Cymoedd, ac a aeth i ysgolion Cymraeg, nad yw'r erthygl yn rhoi darlun cywir ohoni.
"Yn sicr celf ac nid arian yw fy mhrif ddiddordeb mewn bywyd ond doedd yr erthygl NY Times ddim yn hollol gywir. Wnes i ennill lot o arian gan labeli Elektra a Warner/Chappell oedd yn berchen fy nghaneuon i ar un adeg, heb fyth werthu lot o recordiau. Dyna sut mae pethau'n gweithio yn aml. Maen nhw'n rhoi contracts mawr i bobl, ac wedyn yn anghofio amdanyn nhw. Ar yr un llaw, 'wy'n dal yn byw ar yr arian yna, a f uaswn i ddim yn gallu ennill bywoliaeth jyst yn chwarae'n fyw a gwerthu CD's fy nun.
"Ar y llaw all, mae'n system sydd yn lladd diwylliant pop go iawn, hynny yw cerddoriaeth o'r bobol ac nid ymarfer sinigaidd i ddilyn fformiwla er mwyn ennill y mwyaf o arian ag sy'n bosibl. Mae popeth yng nghanol newid o achos y rhyngrwyd, ac mi fydd yn ddiddorol gweld ble fydd pethau'n mynd."
Er iddi ennill gradd yn y gyfraith o'r London School of Economics, dychwelyd i Gaerdydd wnaeth Katell, a bron yn syth, fe ddechreuodd ennill sylw y tu allan i Gymru gyda'i chaneuon.
Ond am chwe mis bu'n rhan o gast yr opera sebon - Pobl y Cwm.
"Roeddwn i newydd adael y coleg ar y pryd. Doeddwn i ddim yn actores - jest cwympo i mewn iddo fe wnes i mewn gwirionedd. Ro'n i'n chwarae rhan Mrs Lloyd, Llydawes yn dysgu Cymraeg - a chadw geifr! Roedd o'n lot o hwyl."
Recordiwyd ei dwy albym gyntaf - "ï Seasons, ï Castles" a "Jet" - ar label Elektra, ac ar ™l trafodaethau maith, a blynyddoedd lle na recordiodd unrhyw beth, llwyddodd i ryddhau ei hun o'i chytundeb gyda hwy.
Roedd y ddwy albym yn gynyrchiadau llawn, ond ar gyfer ei thrydedd, "High July" penderfynodd fynd am swn ychydig yn fwy cynnil, ac mae ei phedwaredd record hir, a fydd allan cyn y Nadolig, yn parhau yn yr un modd.
"Rwyf wedi bod yn recordio yn stiwdio o'r enw The Maid's Room yn Efrog Newydd. Stiwdio ffrind ar y Lower East Side, lle mae lot o hen offer recordio. Dyna lle wnaeth Rufus Wainwright recordio rhan o "Want One" a "Want Two". 'Wy ddim wedi gorffen eto. Mae rhai o'r caneuon gyda band a rhai gyda jest gitar neu piano."
Chafodd hi ddim hyfforddiant cerddorol ffurfiol, ond mae cerddoriaeth wastad wedi bod yn rhan annatod o'i bywyd. Byddai'n canu mewn eisteddfodau ac mewn corau, ac roedd cerddoriaeth - yn enwedig canu gwerin Llydaw a Chymru - yn rhan fawr o fywydau ei rhieni, a oedd ill dau yn weithgar yn wleidyddol. Roedd ei thad, Paol - sy'n fardd adnabyddus - yn aelod o blaid yr Undeb Ddemocrataidd Lydewig, ac yng Nghymru roedd ei mam, Judith, yn weithgar gyda Phlaid Cymru.
Ond mae 'na ddylanwadau byd-eang ar ei cherddoriaeth hefyd.
"Mae'n anodd disgrifio eich cerddoriaeth eich hun. 'Wy'n trio dyfeisio rhywbeth newydd o fewn ffiniau cerddoriaeth "pop" sydd ddim yn Avant Garde. Does dim lot o ddiddordeb 'da fi mewn ffasiynau cerddorol na "scenes".

If you check out the news section of the Road Recovery - Music Without Drugs website, you’ll see a few photos of Katell and a short story on her recent participation in Road Recovery’s Master Class with Crazy James.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2006 :: Shaking The Disease with Katell Keineg While in the midst of a East/West Coast United States tour including a recent performance at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and a New York Times Magazine (July 2, 2006) feature profile, songstress Katell Keineg, graciously participated in Road Recovery’s Master Class Series with Crazy James, whose members number more than a dozen ranging in age from 16-24 years old.
Katell freely shared with the young group of artists her personal journey that led her into a life of music sparked by a mono-record player and a stack of Beatles records. Though she never formally studied music or voice, Katell credits “Busking” - ‘street performing’ in Dublin as her teacher in determining her ability to attract an audience and maintain their attention against the backdrop of a bustling metropolis! Sharing her intimate approach to songwriting, citing her relationship between the lyrics, melody and the evolution of her songs, Katell revealed one of her secrets – how eavesdropping on conversations, especially on the subway, is a means to finding lyrical gems! Katell admits that she is not a prolific songwriter, churning out a small amount of songs each year, but stressed the realization within herself the need to express life as she experiences it through songs makes her feel whole, even with the instability that comes with a life of music.
Together Katell and Crazy James shared their music together and discussed the process that led to the final outcome… Katell left everyone in awe, mouths wide open as she performed “There You Go”, “One Hell Of A Life”, “Hitler Was A Mamas Boy”, “Franklin” and others…Fired up by her artistry and presence, Crazy James ripped into versions of “Disease”, “I’ll Drink To That”, “Erica’s Song”, and “I Can’t Tell Time” which evoked the radical in Katell who replied with yells, hoots and body shaking grooving.
"I support anything that liberates people from oppression, that’s what Road Recovery continues to provide all of us - young and old."– Katell Keineg, Artist
Be on the lookout for possible Katell Keineg + Crazy James billing at a lower eastside New York venue in the near future!

Hi again,
This is Katell’s video for Partisan (320 x 240 @ 316Kbps). I got the file from the SingingFool website (Posted Here) but I mean no harm in putting up online – I just want everyone to enjoy it because not everyone has the bandwidth to make the file play smoothly (I’m on a 56k modem).
It’ll remain online for the next SEVEN days. I encourage all of you to visit the Singingfool website. They have a lot of videos and don't forget to ask them to include more of Katell’s videos - its a very nice site and they respond quickly.
I don't want to get into any trouble - so please don’t mention that I took their video file and posted it here.

Enjoy! Victor

Someone emailed me about a week ago and asked if I could identify a song performed by Katell at the 1999 Breast Cancer Benefit concert (with Natalie Merchant and Susan McKeown). I don't know the song and figured some of you folks might have an idea.
For those of you with a great memory or the concert on CD - it's the song just after Susan McKeown's "God Woman".
Here are some of lyrics and i've seen a few websites label the song as "Captain" but it's not the "Captain" found on High July:
"Can I get a witness" "I'm not ready" "Consoling thoughts they won't console me when time is gone" "A thousand years is not enough"
Thanks, Victor
