I've had the main structure coding for this stylesheet lying around for quite some time; I finally went and finished it up tonight. Also features a version without the sidebar, if you like your layouts simpler.

EDIT: Wooooah, totally gave you the wrong code for the date formatting. :/ I should get more sleep.

General Installation
1. Go to Journal → Customize Journal.

2. On the Choose Journal Style screen, type "Smooth Sailing" into the search box. Apply any of the listed themes.

3. Scroll down to Choose a Page Setup and make sure 2 Column (sidebar on left) is selected.

4. OPTIONAL: If you want to get the date format as shown in the previews, go to Entry Text → Page → Format for Date and Time (Recent/Friends/Entry/Reply page). Copy/paste the following into the box:

5. Click Customize your theme in the Current Theme box on the upper-right.

6. Click Custom CSS.

7. Make sure both drop-down boxes are set to No. Paste the code into the box and click Save Changes.

Wow, we have 250 watchers already? That's pretty sick stuff. No banner because it's 6 in the morning, and the only reason I'm up is because my roommate woke me up when she had to go to her army drill thing at 5.

General Installation
1. Go to Journal → Customize Journal.
2. On the Choose Journal Style screen, type "Smooth Sailing" into the search box. Apply any of the listed themes.
3. Scroll down to Choose a Page Setup and make sure 2 Column (sidebar on left) is selected.
4. Click Customize your theme in the Current Theme box on the upper-right.
5. Click Display and set Wrap Comment text under userinfo to Yes.
6. Go to Sidebar and choose two of the following: Latest Month, Links List, or Free Text. (Activate all three if you are using the header-less version.) Disable all other boxes.
7. Click Custom CSS.
8. Skip this step if you are using the header-less version. Paste the code into your editor of choice and find the following segment of code:

.sidebar { background:black url(http://www.cdupload.com/files/31305_song3/header.gif) no-repeat scroll 20px 20px; border-left:medium none; ... }

Replace the bolded URL with the URL of your own 356x213 header image. (The code does not have the South Park banner by default.)
9. Make sure both drop-down boxes are set to No. Paste the code into the box and click Save Changes.
10. Please credit thrashmetal in your userinfo. (See below)

Tutorial ▶ Removing the Navstrip

Note: This tutorial applies only to any Smooth Sailing layouts I make with the topbar.

I code with the Navstrip, because 1) I use it frequently, and 2) it's the LJ standard, but I realized that a lot of people don't like it. That said, here's some general information on removing it and fixing your CSS so it isn't all warped up. I'm pretty sure this should work for every case, but let me know if there happens to be an exception.

Find the .sidebar selector and the top property contained therein:

.sidebar { ... top: VALUEpx ... }

Now all it takes is some simple arithmetic on your part. Take that value and subtract 45 from it. For instance, the Sea Glass and Cherry Blossom layouts have a top value of 177px, so replace that with 132. Save your changes and the sidebar should be properly positioned.
