Training Sessions

After a conversation with a friend also training in karate (although a different branch) I've got a question about training sessions.

How are sessions divided up in regards to people and belts/ability/age at your dojo, and about how many people at a session there?

At the dojo I'm training at, we've got about twelve people training if everyone's there (seems like masses compared to about seven at the start of the school year, and the end of the year before, if everyone showed up) and so there's one session for all of us and we generally work on the same sort of things, if divided up by belt a bit. How do things run at anyone else's dojo?

So far no more than 5 have showed up at once. We divide up for less than half the class, usually into two groups working on different kata.

It all depends on the day...for the evening classes, it's anywhere from 10 to upwards of 25. We all do the warmup, basic kicks/punches, and the first kata together, once the top kata is reached for a belt level, those at the particular belt colour (ie: yellow after shihohai at my dojo) divide off, mostly paired with a black belt if they are a lower level, or just graded. Once we split up, it's either kata work, or kion-kumite/wristlocks/breakdowns/etc.

On occasion, if it's a large class, and usually it's the "beginner" class (min. white belt to attend, as opposed to min. orange to attend for other classes), we do line work, where everyone lines up, and does a particular exercise (blocks, kicks, combinations) down the length of the dojo floor.

I haven't been to a noon class in months, but they always broke off by belt, from what I can remember.

All the classes at our dojo, with the exception of private/semi-private sessions, normally have a minimum of 15 students. Some classes are mixed belts, with several teachers overseeing the training, and then are split into belt divisions, which can vary from 7 - 25 students depending on the belt.

At the old studio I attended, we had between 10 and 25 people during the morning classes, and between 15 and 30 in the evening classes. We had different class times depending on the age (3-5, 6-8, 9-12, 13 and up), but within the class, we broke them up by belt. The only exceptions were if someone struggled with a particular belt level and wanted to join those at the belt level for the evening, or if a test was coming up - those with all their material would join together to practice.

At the new studio I attend (just recently opened), we have between 3 and 17 people, depending on the time of day, the day itself, and the age of the class. We have a 3-5, 6-12, and 13 and up class. We still divide up by belt levels, but we tend to put more belt levels together - it depends how many instructors are available to teach that night.
