Gouzou “No-Brakes” Maguruma is a dependable comrade, a fact to which Kuroudo Akabane would attest even if they hadn’t known each other for as long as they have. Maguruma is practical, punctual, and knows the area well enough to drive anywhere on a moment’s notice.

“How thoughtful of you to help,” Akabane says sweetly.

“You’re buying me dinner after we dump these,” Maguruma grunts as he shifts the load he’s half-carrying-half-dragging out the hallway of Akabane’s apartment. It isn’t a question.

Akabane smiles agreement, and stoops to help him move the last of the burglars that foolishly challenged Doctor Jackal.

A man’s twenty-first birthday is a momentous occasion and should be celebrated as such, Ban proclaimed when he dragged Ginji out on the town, financial expenses be damned.

One block of lighting suddenly went out like a candle in a windstorm, and seconds later the birthday bash soured as Ban and Ginji were ejected from one of the more popular houses of pleasure. They took off running as though their lives were at stake. Considering the current state of the girl Ginji had been with, it wasn’t an entirely false claim.

Two men have followed him into the alley. One is smoking a cigarette, fingers curved into ruthless fangs. One saunters shadowlike behind him with an eerily pleasant smile. Weapons flash through the night with thundered words and steely lightning.

It’s over in seconds. Seeing his enemies none the worse for wear, Tetsuiga senses liquid heat dripping down his torso and looks - his clothes are stained red with what appears to be the bloody outline of a letter. He gags, drops his gun, feeling something suddenly break and split further apart inside him as if a vise has crushed his bones, and collapses on the ground.

“Why?” he chokes out at the attackers, just before the last of his blood drains into the gutters.

The hat-clad predator smiles charmingly, yet lethally, as he stoops and explains to the corpse while his partner, all blue ice, nods.

“You made Ginji-kun cry.”

Leadership isn’t a power but a burden, Ginji told him once. Being a leader means accepting a will greater than one’s own desire – protecting people requires that one surrender all illusions of power and bind oneself to eternal servitude.

Some time after the IL mission Makubex confessed that he’d worshipped the ground Raitei had walked upon, to which a sadly smiling Ginji replied, “Yes, but what you never saw were all the times I couldn’t save people, or the hurt I carried inside me from my failures. I left Raitei behind because I couldn’t juggle both his pain and yours.”

Makubex reflects on these words now as he surveys the new kingdom he’s built of Lower Town, one of unity and care rather than fear and discord. He’s already made one whopping mistake in his lifetime that he’s vowed not to repeat. He owes it to his former Thunder Emperor and to his current subjects to protect and serve them for as long as it takes to free the whole of Mugenjou.

A true leader, Makubex has learned, is someone like Ginji: someone who recognizes that the price exacted for power is that of penance, a lifelong commitment to others.

The opponent faced him, fearsome intent lighting dark eyes with fire. Akabane glanced at the huddled group in the corner, wondering what it was about this fighter that had so cowed even the legendary Ban Midou and Ginji Amano. According to Ginji-kun, this one had bested all who risked a challenge.

Naturally Akabane’s interest was piqued. He had to try, out of sheer curiosity. Midou-kun had laughed, “It’s your funeral.” Ginji-kun had solemnly said, “You’re very brave, Akabane-san,” and hugged him.

Akabane looked at the girl again. Natsumi smiled sweetly, raising her paddle. “Ready?”

Really. How bad could ping-pong be?

When he was younger Yukihiko got bowled over by the rest of his family. Given his peaceful nature he often let them get away with it, until his brother Hikage warned him that if he continued to let the others push him around they’d never stop doing so. Years later Yukihiko understood why.

As eldest, Natsuhiko was long used to getting his way. It came as no surprise when he took one look at the retrieval specialist and said, “He dies.”

Yukihiko, however, has learned to stand up for himself. And so – for the time being, at least – Ginji-kun lives.

Maguruma was a typical kid at heart when it came to moving vehicles, immediately heading for the bumper cars.

Akabane didn’t care for carnivals but found minor amusement in scaring off players at the dart-throwing booths.

Himiko was waiting for her comrades to return from another ride when she heard someone being violently ill nearby.

Akabane gave her a queasy smile. Then he stuck his head hat and all back into the trashcan and was sick again.

Maguruma appeared. Himiko’s raised eyebrow asked the question in regards to their indisposed partner.

“Tilt-a-Whirls don’t use brakes either,” the notorious driver grinned.

She had reluctantly agreed after weeks of pestering, knowing her would-be suitor was persistent in his wooing efforts. Fortunately Himiko wasn’t worried about the procession of events. Should Kagami get too...friendly tonight, she had her arsenal of poisons ready. She had also secured a backup measure, and thus she felt confident. For she had remembered to bring her secret weapon along, the trump card she saved for very special occasions like this.

When Kagami arrived for their date he stared, and muttered, “Oh, fuck...”

Behind Himiko, Akabane Kuroudo smiled sweetly yet dangerously. “Not as long as I’m around, you won’t.”

Author's Notes: Took drabble requests in my LJ, and b_hallward requested "Ban-centric, things that break."

"What's this for?" Ban takes the violin from the tutor, but frowns at it. His grandmother frowns at him.

"You must learn control," she says, "discipline, though perhaps that's asking too much. I certainly don't hope for refinement, despite the instrument's noble history."

Ban knows better than to talk back, but his hand tightens, and the wood creaks faintly. The tutor squawks; triumph glints in his grandmother's fierce eyes. Ban's just proven her point.

He lets go; the tutor scrambles, but his grandmother is faster, catching it before it's fallen even an inch, holding it lightly.

Proving the point again.
