PEGGY'S PROMOTION IN (1.13) "THE WHEEL"
Many fans of the show have made a big deal of Peggy Olson's promotion in the Season One finale, (1.13) "The Wheel". Actually, many have focused upon Peggy's upward mobility from the secretarial pool to her new position as one of the firm's copywriters - a professional. I had just finished watching this episode and another thought came to mind. ( Read more... )

I'm not involved with this project myself, but the Organization for Transformative Works has started a GeoCities Rescue Project. This sounds like a very worthy undertaking to me.

John Barrowman is unrecognisable as dashing Captain Jack Harkness after slipping into a pair of high heels and a skimpy dress to promote his upcoming stint in La Cage aux Folles.

Stephen Fry has admitted illegally downloading a hit US show starring his former comedy partner Hugh Laurie.
The broadcaster and wit told an audience in London that he had used BitTorrent file-sharing to get a copy of Laurie's show House.
Speaking at the iTunes Festival in London's Roundhouse, Fry said: "The last thing I illegally downloaded - was it a gay sex romp? ... It was the season finale of House."

If you've ever wondered who's in control, you or your cat, a new study points to the obvious. It's your cat.
Household cats exercise this control with a certain type of urgent-sounding, high-pitched meow, according to the findings.
This meow is actually a purr mixed with a high-pitched cry. While people usually think of cat purring as a sign of happiness, some cats make this purr-cry sound when they want to be fed. The study showed that humans find these mixed calls annoying and difficult to ignore.

Television is a medium we expect fluffiness from, and yet Viewers for Quality Television and people who contribute to the Journal of Popular Culture would probably prefer fewer shows like Wipeout and more like Lost. There was a recent book out about how genre programs with complex mythologies actually increase intelligence. But some recent trends from some showrunners once again prove to me that fun and good are often mutually exclusive.
Some exceptions to this rule, of course, do exist. How fun and yet also good are Pushing Daisies, The Middleman, or the pilot of Glee? Yes, these all have their angsty moments, but all three of those shows are rife with so much hope and cuteness they almost induce nausea. And yet there's also True Blood, Battlestar Galactica, and everything Joss Whedon's ever done--all of which are fun and good but also VERY MUCH NOT FUN a lot of the time. There is zero guarantee of a happy ending for anyone, and characters are much more likely to meet sad ends. Moral choices are ambiguous, and the themes are heady and overwhelming.
Which got me thinking about other pieces, either literary or cinematic or what have you ("texts," for a better word) that you found moving or compelling or just acclaim-worthy that you also never, ever want to see/read again. Schindler's List sorts of stuff, for example. For me, I'm not sure if I want to see the upcoming film adaptation of The Time Traveler's Wife. I also know there are certain episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that I'd skip if I do another series re-watch.
There was a rumor back in the '80s that the entire cast of Family Ties wanted the series to end on the whole Keaton family dying horribly in an accident. Their thinking was that this would completely eradicate the possibility of a cheesy reunion show and also make the series seem poignant when viewed in hindsight (the last happy years of a doomed family). But, really? That's how you want a beloved sitcom to go out? Is that fair or kind or anything other than kind of pretentious and jerky?
People die. Bad things happen. But good things happen, too, and I'm not sure anything of value can be gained by doing shocking things to characters just for the sake of shock value. (Is anyone reading this old enough to remember Rosalind Shays going down the elevator shaft on L.A. Law?)
You don't just do stuff to give your audience a heart attack. You do stuff because it makes sense and genuinely says something of artistic merit, sheds light on some unexamined part of the human condition. And if you're not aiming for that much altruism, then you seek to entertain. I'm not saying it should be a text's goal to never upset its fans, to keep characters alive just because people would be too sad if they died. But don't just start thinning out the credits sequences just because it's shocking and edgy to do so. At some point, it just becomes mean, like someone taking the ladder away from a Sim in a swimming pool, or a little kid burning ants with a magnifying glass. Yes, writer/creator/producer, we get that you're in charge and can snap your fingers and make people disappear by your whim, but ultimately such behavior only seems pouty and petty.
Authors are indeed gods of their created universes, but should gods truly delight in the destruction of said universes? At what point does that make you stop being god-like and start being... well, something else entirely?

CHICOOOOOOS!!!!!
Besos,
Lux.
This was posted at ONTD and is originally from a Canadian newspaper. This op-ed was written by Craig Pinhey, who in his own words, "still pines for Firefly." While I never watched Firefly, I still really miss the Dresden Files, so I can relate. If you missed Virtuality, you can watch it on Hulu.
( why Chris thinks Virtuality is the best show that never happened )
I know I've been mentioning Virtuality and how everyone should watch it, blah blah blah.
