Eve Ensler, the American playwright, performer, feminist and activist
best known for "The Vagina Monologues", wrote the following about
    Sarah Palin.

    Drill, Drill, Drill

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was
a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of
drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a
particular thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or
their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have
never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is the fact that
they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.

I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life
trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence
against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the
Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people
who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.

Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the
floor of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between
nations and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing
    we call life?

    Recent events regarding John Edwards

I'm pretty sure no one reading this has failed to catch some of the news stories about John's affair. Looking at some of the group's recent Friends entries, I can see that there are a lot of emotions from you guys on this story.

I thought it might be good to have a post here, if you would like to share your thoughts and feelings, especially with people who understand just that little bit more.

For me, I'm still in a bit of shock really, and I feel awful for Elizabeth. The affair, and now all the media coverage, is the last thing she and her family need. I really believed in their love, and thought John was above that - especially after Elizabeth's battle with cancer. I see photos of him, and I still see such a beautiful man, aesthetically anyway. But I feel very uncomfortable in doing so, given his very ugly actions, and seemingly unpleasant character.

Hope no one minds me posting this here, and that it may be of help to some of you. And that next time I post here, it'll be under happier circumstances.

    Letter From John Kerry
    Dear Richard,

I wanted to take a very quick break from my travels not to ask for money and not to talk politics, but just to pass on some thoughts about two big global challenges which need to be on our minds: HIV/AIDS and climate change.

This week, Teresa and I experienced an up close and personal reminder of how far the world has yet to travel to defeat HIV/AIDS. Talking with people in poverty stricken KwaNgcolosi near Hillcrest in Durban, South Africa, we saw both the most inspiring and the most heartbreaking realities of a global struggle to defeat a global scourge.

We met orphaned children left with no choice but to assume adult responsibilities, caring for their young brothers and sisters. We met single mothers scratching out subsistence in mud houses, their husbands lost to a horrific disease. I have to tell you, experiences like this have an impact on you.

I didn't want to wait until I got back to the United States to say something to you, because tomorrow is World AIDS Day - and it needs to be a day of action. Challenge Washington to stop blocking better educational efforts and stop putting ideology before science. Demand that American leadership help convince nations like South Africa not to repeat our shameful denial of HIV/AIDS in the 1980s - and to commit their countries to saving lives not saving face. There is no fixing a problem political leaders refuse to admit exists.

There's something else - and I'll have much more to say about this when I'm back. I'll be leading - with Senator Boxer - a Senate delegation to Bali in December to the global conference where work will start on a new international climate change treaty. We can't wait until we have a new president; we need to get moving now. The world simply can't solve these problems without American participation and leadership. Stay tuned.

Bottom line - these are the huge global issues that demand that America be America again, and that we lead by example - and that we lead now.

    Sincerely,

    John F. Kerry

    PLEASE READ!
Subject: Help to stop an endless occupation in Iraq

Hi, Have you seen the news? President Bush is negotiating a deal with Iraq to keep our troops there indefinitely--it could include permanent bases and a massive military presence for years! Bush is trying to tie the hands of the next president.

Congress can stop him from setting up permanent bases in Iraq and block an indefinite occupation--but they need to hear a groundswell of pressure from us immediately and loudly so they act on this quickly.

I just signed a petition demanding that Congress stop the president from committing to a massive military presence in Iraq for decades. Can you join me?

    Iran
Don't let Bush get us into a war with Iran!

    Hi,

I just signed a petition to ask Congress to demand President Bush seek congressional authorization before considering

military action in Iran. He seems out of control, and we have to stop the war in Iraq from escalating into a regional

crisis. Congress can do this, but they need to hear from us.

    Can you sign?

    Go, Little John!!!
Since no one else has posted, let me be the first to cheer for our rockstar John Edwards announcing his run for the presidency again in 2008!

    *throws confetti & cheers*

Though there will never be another political 'ship quite like John/John, I still wonder who he'll pick for a running mate if he gets the nomination?

Stewart/Colbert on Kerry's 'struck in iraq' comment
Has anyone not heard of what he had said by now? I found out while watching The Daily Show and The Colbert Report killing time yesterday. I liked the first headline that GoogleNews turned up, very appropriate...

Kerry assumes old role: Political punching bag
International Herald Tribune, France - 1 hour ago
... Senator John Kerry had been carefully and quietly building himself back up after his failed 2004 presidential run, campaigning for Democratic candidates in ...

    Article )

I actually don't remember much of The Daily Show, I missed it the first time around and I actually caught it hours after The Colbert Report when I was getting sleepy...but it was definitely The Colbert Report's coverage that struck out at me. They played Kerry's clip, had someone go mock outraged over it, played Bush's disapproval of it...and then they played all the times Bush and Co said even more inappropriate things. Including the time Bush joked about the WMDs not being found...while troops are dying en masse in Iraq because he sent them there without a GOOD plan, Mad Magazine can joke about it, he can't, because he put them there.

While I get Kerry's point, I still don't think he speaks well, as always, he's a bit stiff, I have no clue how he can stay so stiff when he's married to Teresa Heinz Kerry. As much as some media blast THK for having a mouth on her, that god forbid, she uses it to speak her mind, I bet had THK been the man running for president she would have gone over very well because she's smooth, must be a linguist thing.

Oh yes, can't forget to include this, Edwards defends Kerry, kinda:

According to Ryan from the OAC. Look for a diary with John Edwards' name on it. The post should be up around 6:15pm EDT, and he'll be around for a bout an hour is the rumor.

    Elizabeth Edwards New Book
I got an email from Elizabeth Edwards telling me about her upcoming book. I thought you would be interested in reading her message and signing up to get an excerpt from her book. Here's what she said:

As you may have heard, I've finished writing a book about you, and it is about to be published. Actually, it is not you in particular (although you may recognize yourself somewhere on its pages). It is about the bigger "you" -- the "you" I talked about in the 2004 campaign, the "you" who sustained us for those two years and who sustained me throughout all the valleys and peaks life has brought.

The book is called "Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers." I hope it is a tribute to the power that community can have in our lives. I know that I have been -- and I believe we all are -- always stronger and better when we let the strength of others help us. "Saving Graces" is about those connections and the support they've given me in my life.

I wanted to share "Saving Graces" with you before the book comes out -- next Tuesday -- because I know firsthand that some of the most important connections in our lives may not be face-to-face. I found them in the mail, on the phone, and -- as I describe in the book -- certainly through the internet.

Click here to be one of the first to read an excerpt from my book at:

Don't Let The Republican Senate Pardon Bush
Subject: Don't let the Senate let President Bush off the hook for breaking the law

    Hi,

This week, the Senate is planning to quietly hold a vote that would pardon President Bush for breaking the law by illegally wiretapping innocent Americans.

The bill would let the administration off the hook for breaking the law and make it legal to wiretap Americans, in secret, without any oversight whenever they want to.

Democrats and some Republicans are holding strong against it, and if enough of us speak up we can stop it. Can you sign the petition opposing the Republican move to pardon President Bush for breaking the law?

    ABC and 9/11
    Hey,

The ABC television network, owned by the Walt Disney Company, is airing what it calls a "docudrama" entitled "The Path to 9/11". ABC has claimed the mini-series is based on the 9/11 Commission Report, but that is simply not true. "The Path to 9/11" is actually a bald-faced attempt to slander Democrats and revise history right before Americans vote in a major election.

Tell Walt Disney president Robert Iger to keep this propaganda off the air:
