You’ve never believed in total devotion, in soul mates or destiny. Till now. Till it hit you right out of the blue. And who made you see this great revelation? You did. Oh not ‘you’ you, but you…or an older-very much older, you.
Oh you’ve seen the looks, felt the tingle. Felt the goddam over powering fear. But you fear for them all, right? He isn’t special. Your heart doesn’t lurch when you think something has happened to him, could happen to him. You lie to yourself and that isn’t good.
You lie to him too. Oh not blatantly, but you lie all the same. You know he makes an effort, knows he cares. Yet you act nonchalantly, casual, and brush it off. You cant have these feelings. You have to send him out knowing full well he might not come back.
You will never forget the look in his eyes when Kolya held you at gunpoint. You were scared and trembling, yet as you looked at him, you knew you we’re going to be spared. Knew he was going to save you, save all of you. It was the look in his eyes of pure anger. He looked to you, then glared at him. Silently he told you everything was going to be fine, you were going to be fine. You never doubted him. He’s never given you cause to doubt him.
The older you. Hell you’ve seen some things in your time, but to come face to face with a ten thousand year old version of yourself, is…you don’t even have words to say what it is. Words are your job, yet you’re speechless.
When she told you all of your ‘first’ time in Atlantis, It filled you with horror. To know she sacrificed her life so that you, or a future you, might be spared the same fate. You don’t know if this you would have done the same. Deep down you know you would do anything for these people. You have never felt such a closeness in your life.
When ‘she’ recounted that final mission, the one that sent her back in time and sent him to his death. The strangled scream she made has haunted you. It wasn’t what she said, it was what she didn’t say. She lost him. You wont. You might not have him-but you will do your uttmost not to lose him like she did.
You do care. It’s time you showed him-and stopped lying to yourself. This time round, you may not get a second chance.
