Note: I'm not Jewish; I'm currently in the process of conversion. This can be deleted if necessary; however since I'm definitely converting I only really interested in meeting Jewish people right now. Friends would also be great; it's a little harder to convert when your sponsoring rabbi(s) think it will negatively impact you because there's no one your age in the community and you don't hear things from the age group you're in on "living Jewish/being Jewish."

What movement you belong to: As noted by my LJ name, I'm converting (with the Conservative movement). At this rate I'll probably be out of college before I successfully do anything regarding conversion because I live with my family and emergencies spring up a lot. Hopefully I'll really be done before I transfer (less than a year).

Education: In college, currently working on a Communications/Journalism major and am also seriously considering achieving a teaching credential.

Occupation: Day-care/day-camps. I tend to work with elementary-school children.

Interests: SCUBA diving, bicycling, soccer, hiking, reading, writing, walking... In fact, almost anything other than mathematics. I'm not huge on watching sports, but it's not something I can't stand to do, either.

What exactly you are looking for?: I'd like to meet someone within the Reform or Conservative ranks, or make contact with Jewish friends / potential dating in either Orange County, Riverside County, or even Sonoma County (I would love to transfer to Sonoma State University). The area where I live doesn't have many Jewish people my age, so I'd love to just meet some people in my age range, say, 20-27 or 28. Preferably said person likes to be somewhat active, friend or otherwise, because I am not a big fan of laying around on the beach - I'd rather swim it.

Hello. I've never actually filled one of these out, so feel free to ask questions and I'll fill in what I can.

I am currently 20, going on 21 on December 31st. I am male and live near Houston, Seabrook to be exact. I am 144cm and about 10 stone. I am currently in college attending San Jacinto (because it's cheap) and managed to pass most of the courses this semester (mostly through lack of desire to continue writting useless papers on topics I couldn't be arsed about). I am, as far as Judaism is concerned, somewhere between Conservative and Orthodox with a speck of reform in there. I don't want to be tied down by one's label or the other, but have been commented as being a little more practicing than some. I am currently employed by Space Center Houston as a tour guide for Johnson Space Center. Not the best paying job, but very rewarding and managable due to my lack of needs. I am interested in a wide variety of subjects, including but not limited to linguitics, a great deal of music, jazz, angelic trumpets and devil trombones, my computer, Italian and most other "ethnic" foods, Hungary, Lithuania, the space program of many countries, and tea.

As I mentioned earlier, ask questions, this is new to me, and criticize like you were my mother.

A success story?

So, way back in December of 2003, when this community first started, two posts were made by two very special people. However it seemed that no one appreciated my unique sense of humor and no one appreciated this guy at all, for very good reason. For the record, I think I should point out that we initially made first contact on a different lj community (I'm not going to name any names, but it's for weird Jewish folk, and the name has something to do with weirdness, and something to do with Jews, especially weird ones). While I don't really consider it our first "meeting," (we actually met, in person, in February 2004 when we were working at the same place), I can not deny that initial contact was made online.

That said, I am leaving this community. Why? Because one week ago mick_hale and I got engaged. So there you go, ladies and gentlemen, a real, honest to goodness success story. Never give up, never surrender, and never stop having faith.

I am with some of the people who have posted already about not being that thrilled with a lot of Jewish dating sites like jdate.

I usually date through friends. But when I do try to date online, I look for sites that are not 100% focused on dating and marriage, but where you can do a lot of more things within the Jewish community like discuss topics, looking for jobs, etc.

The one site that I mainly use is Jewish Connection. It is like a Jewish myspace. You get to make a profile and you can make friends, date or business partners. There are also events and clubs to join, so there is always something to do there.

Well, I'm new to the community, so I may as well throw myself out there.

Rabbi Kornblum, author of the book Why Marry Jewish, spoke to us about the importance of marrying and dating Jewish. This really resonated with me. He brought up three main points:
1. Good for the marriage
2. Good for the kids
3. Good for the spirituality
I'd go into more detail but I think I want to read his book first. The most striking thing for me was the observation of the shape of a curve in terms of Jewish spirituality and spirituality in general. For some reason 95% of kids who are brought up in a strong Jewish house hold stop participating in Jewish activities after their bar or bat mitzvahs. This continues until nearly age 30, when suddenly people resume interest in their religions. Most people meet their college sweethearts or get married some time between 13 and 30. Not all, but a good portion. Now think about the ramifications of meeting someone when your religious activity is low, falling in love, getting serious, hell, even getting married and having kids. A few years later you're realizing, by golly, I want to raise my kids Jewish. Suddenly your spouse is saying, whoah there, when did this come up, we never discussed this, etc. Suddenly your not so religious spouse wants the kids to go to sunday school and be baptized. Suddenly the religious part of your core being can't connect worth a damn and you're left with this sort of cultural void. I think it happens all the time. Amazing, really.

So anyway...
