You work fast! Nice shots! Wha-hey!

Does anyone else love the way Brett always positions himself in front of the fireplace so he can turn around dramatically when one of Holmes' clients enters?

This is the first episode I noticed it in and now I always look for it. Never can resist a touch of the dramatic, indeed!

Yeah. I really love it. He really is quite the master showman.

It's especially obvious in Dying Detective where he actually sets up the sitting-room for Mrs. Savage and pretends to have been standing in front of the fireplace the whole time instead of watching her for the "past three minutes" waiting for her to come in.

Oh! I loved that part! The way he's looking out the window, so eager to get another case. Like a kid on Christmas morning or something!

Almost too eager, eh?

It kind of brought to mind something from the Canon that I've never ever been able to recover from:

“Arrest you!” said Holmes. “This is really most grati -– most interesting. On what charge do you expect to be arrested?”

“Upon the charge of murdering Mr. Jonas Oldacre, of Lower Norwood.”

My companion’s expressive face showed a sympathy which was not, I am afraid, entirely unmixed with satisfaction.

“Dear me,” said he, “it was only this moment at breakfast that I was saying to my friend, Dr. Watson, that sensational cases had disappeared out of our papers.”

The meanie...teehee...

Holmes, Holmes, Holmes! *shakes finger*

I thought that part in The Norwood Builder was priceless too. Did you notice that they dropped the correction in the Granada episode and Brett just said, "This is really most gratifying"? At least I remember him saying that.

Er...would I seem too pitiful if I said that I haven't seen that one either? *insert whimpering puppy dog eyes here* Yet another to chalk up in my list of films to see immediately...

Oh, no! *sympathy puppy dog eyes* How many have you seen from The Adventures?

I think The Adventures and The Return are my favorite "seasons" (whatever) because Brett has more energy and vigor, and the writers kept more of the comedic moments; some of the later episodes became a little too serious for me. Of course, every episode has at least one or two scenes that I'm horribly attached to. *huggles Holmes, Watson and Mrs. Hudson*

Er...hehehe...

As I only discovered this wonderful series this year...hmm...three from The Adventures, one from The Return, one from The Casebook and one from The Memoirs. Quite a pitiful count but pretty well distributed, if I do say so myself (heehee, that's rationalizing for you :D).

I think The Adventures and The Return are my favorite "seasons"

Even from the little I've seen, I must say I agree. I was a bit taken aback 'cause the first ep I ever saw was the one from Memoirs, The Dying Detective. Not only was JB looking more like Mycroft than Sherlock (*sigh*), but the story was padded beyond what I expected. Even then, JB was great, especially when he goes on and on about oysters. So, when I got to watch The Naval Treaty, I felt so much better. Finally, there was the Jeremy Brett everyone was raving about.:D

Of course, every episode has at least one or two scenes that I'm horribly attached to. *huggles Holmes, Watson and Mrs. Hudson*

Ditto!

Case in point: I love it in The Dying Detective when Mrs. Hudson retorts, "Rats! Beeswax! Mr. Holmes, you are the very worst tenant in London!" and leaves in a huff. This leaves me in stitches every time.

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond. Life! It happens. And it especially prevents me from writing long responses.

...three from The Adventures, one from The Return, one from The Casebook and one from The Memoirs

Oh, that's so sad! There are so many great moments you simply must see! Just curious, which Returns ep did you see? I only really discovered the series in March of 2005, so I'm a neophyte as well. I hope you can catch them on TV or buy the DVDs soon. *crosses fingers and wishes oodles o' spending money on you*

Ah, The Dying Detective. That has to be my favorite of Conan Doyle’s Holmes adventures. It was so much fun to read: Holmes at his most batty and Watson at his most heartwarmingly loyal. "Half crowns and oysters" now brings a smile to the faces of me and my siblings. Also, I love it when they interact so you can see the friendship, usually in what I call "Baker Street beginnings", because once the case starts Watson shuts his mouth and Holmes interacts with everyone else as he works to solve it.
The Granada version . . . well, the first time I saw it I was disappointed. It was one of the few that I had read the original story first, and it was so funny (because you knew Holmes was faking it) and then the episode has all this other stuff going on and the sickbed scene was completely chopped down and they cut out the half crowns *pouts*. But I have watched it since and bonded with some of the new elements: Watson being all chivalrous toward Mrs. Savage and her children *huggles Watson*, and the fact that they made Holmes saving a widow and orphans from being homeless rather than simply securing justice for a dead man. So noble! *huggles Holmes*

Mr. Holmes, you are the very worst tenant in London!

I love that line! Especially because it was Watson who wrote it in the narration in the book; hoorah for canon-fidelity! *bliss!!!*

Chee, don't worry, I'm guilty of late replying too, especially when I'm not feling well...hehehe, anyway...:)

which Returns ep did you see?

Interestingly enough, I'm watching it right now. It's The Devil's Foot. Lucky for me, it's got loads of classic moments.

That has to be my favorite of Conan Doyle’s Holmes adventures.

Oh yeah, if you use Holmes' methods on my copy of the Canon, you'll see that it's one of the stories I've read the most; it's where the pages open all the way to the spine.:) I remember the first time I read it--either I was ridiculously gullible or ACD really writes marvellously well, but Holmes very nearly took me in. There were moments there that he really had me, but the fact that there were stories after that one kept warning me that our favorite detective was up to something fishy.

Yep, I too was disappointed when the Granada people cut out most of the delusionary babble, but I did find it amusing when they inserted "bivalves...presumably there are monovalves..." in the dialogue. That was crazy, that really was. Oh, and yay to the noble widow-rescuing! And it's real cute how little Marina Savage goes up to him hesitantly and thanks him in the end.

That's just one scene that I love (and quote) for no reason. But, of course, it's a gazillion times better once you've heard their deliveries.

You've just strengthened exponentially my resolve to see this one. That Sherlock Holmes is cheerful, so Sherlock Holmes must have a case line is a laugh riot even in print. Thanks for sharing that one.:)
