Maou on You Weekly
Hi all!~

I believe some fans have already seen or bought You-weekly magazine which features a small part on Japanese dramas.

I have provided some translations and scans for the magazine + some personal opinions.

Scans:
(Clickable)

Translations: (Note: my translations isn't perfect. But I tried putting the main points down)

Out of all the new season japanese dramas, the only one which was a remake is Toma's drama named "Maou". The other 2 dramas were original films and "Shibatora" is an adapted story from the manga featured in "weekly shounen magazine" in 2006.

When the korean version of "Maou" (otherwise known as "Mawang") was aired, due to unseen reasons, the ratings were not good. But the casts' have received good reviews on their acting skills. The Japanese version of "Maou" focuses on 2 male lead actors namely Ohno Satoshi and Ikuta Toma who have great popularity. However in local japanese fans opinions, Ohno's looks and popularity couldn't be compared to Toma's and he could not portray the same character as the popular korean idol, Joo Ji Hoon. As for the female actress, "kobayashi ryoko",  other than her figure which is slimmer than the korean actress, her charisma isn't as good as the korean one

In the first week of maou's broadcast, its ratings won shibatora by 1%. (Maou's was 14%, and Shibatora's was 13%) And lets hope the new drama "33" which will be aired in August by Domoto Tsyoshi, will bring justice back for japanese dramas.

Personal Thoughts: Its really furious to know that they are writing so much negative comments about ohno!!!!!!!! And that the editor probably didn't even watch the drama to give such reviews!! As some of my friends and I could not accept such article, we wrote a complain letter to you weekly about their writing styles and contents. If everyone also feels unjustified on the way how they wrote, its good to write a letter to them too. Let them know the power of fangirls.

so not nice!

i thought i was bein oversensitive. i'm glad u guys feel the same way too.
Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 06:19 am (UTC)
They seemed to be anti-japanese artistes now!!!!
I bet all of us fans are feeling angry over this small column. D:

What the hell is this magazine thinking?! Criticizing the drama and it's casts?!?!
How do you actually write a letter of complaint then?
I want to complain too! How can they say such things?! I bet the editor is an idiot who does not know how to appreciate good dramas even if it slapped him/her at his face!
Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 06:22 am (UTC)
Hello, glad that you have the same feelings as I do.

I wrote an email to them.
youmail@sph.com.sg

I've provided some information regarding this u-weekly issue in the comments above. I simply feel local editors are anti japanese. =.=
Monica: ohno+jun[info]makito on July 22nd, 2008 11:21 pm (UTC)
thanks for sharing the article and traslation! :D
I totally agree with you (i have already write my opinion somewhere else, so I'm more calm), how dare he ditch Rida?!
It seems the writer didn't see Maou and just asked anyone around him/her and decided to put it in an article, so unfair!
I congratulate you for the complain letter!!!
Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 06:26 am (UTC)
Hi, you're welcome. :D Actually it was one of my friend suggested to tell me put up the translations, because it was kinda horribly done. I feel that the editors did not watch any of the maou episodes. Considering there's only 3 episodes unless she watched it online. What I disliked is she made it as if it was a lousy production. DDDD:
Aimee[info]skipthbeat on July 23rd, 2008 02:56 am (UTC)
This is really frustrating~! I can't believe the writer's words -.- Seriously unfair t Ohno. I'm definitely complaining t the editor!
Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 06:27 am (UTC)
Thanks for your support. lol. I really can't stand how the editor criticizes japanese artistes, even if its not arashi/je. they're too influenced by the korean wave.

Wthell? Wthell? Wthell? I wish I knew how to write aletter to them. Are they tryin to ruin Ohno's image? Its his first f**king drama and they are already talking crap about him? And Omg I didn't know that this was Toma's Drama wither I thought it was a double lead role! I tell ya they must be smoking something while writing Ohno is soo Kawaii and Popular Arashi had concerts in Korea And Taiwan and they're gonna do again tis year Not popular!!? My butt. One last thing If ur gonna compare Mawang and Maou at least do it on some form of bases acting scenery direction stuff ...not looks and Popularity! Ughh Omg So lucky I dun know them cuz They would be knocked out(I know kickboxing!) T.T I just feel for Ohno hope he dosen't feel bad if he see tis.Sry for the long comment gomen.
Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 06:29 am (UTC)
its okay!! its good to share your opinion. I really hope this kind of news don't spread to je. considering it is probably based on her own feelings and she probably didn't even really compare to give such article. T____T u-weekly threw singaporeans' faces by writing this kind of crappy stuff.
★☆021☆★: white Maou[info]sweathoneyeah on July 23rd, 2008 03:26 am (UTC)
this reporter is either typing her own bias remarks or just copying and pasting.. she ... i think the editor of u mag is very unfamiliar with japanese stuff.
anyway lets send her a red envelope hahah
Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 06:30 am (UTC)
I think they just saw it from some places and decided to copy and paste. She couldn't have compared unless she has watched it herself. And they are only at epi 3 and she's already putting the verdict that its a bad drama. T______T let's ask naruse-san to send her 100 red envelopes.
nicadj[info]nicadj on July 23rd, 2008 04:11 am (UTC)
esssh, this writer is totally biased. I mean, it's okay to criticize the series but when you badmouth actors like that, oh please... be more professional! Critique them based on their performance, and not their personality~ so biased. this writer shouldn't have been a writer at all.
Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 06:32 am (UTC)
I think our local editors/writers are very unprofessional. Considering they never did their research before publishing such article. She'll be so dead if I hear people commenting that maou is a lousy series just because they read that column!!!!!
karened[info]karened on July 23rd, 2008 07:35 am (UTC)
Yes, the power of fangirls! I don't think Ohno's any less popular tha Toma ( I like Toma too). Even in Japan, I think Ohno's as popular as he is with us overseas fans!! And his acting is great. I haven't watched Mawang but I don't remember Joo Ji Hoon's acting (in other dramas) as superb. I'm sure Ohno, with his butai experience, can act at least as well as Ji Hoon, if not better.

And, Jdoramas need nothing to bring justice back for them. Why can't people stop thinking that on Kdramas are popular? Jdoramas are also doing quite well, recovering from the past!
karened[info]karened on July 23rd, 2008 07:39 am (UTC)
and I'm gonna contribute to the power of fangirls by emailing too. Thanks for providing the info ne.

Rachel[info]rachie241282 on July 23rd, 2008 08:53 am (UTC)

I just sent them an email too. Not expecting a reply or anything, based on their irresponsibility with such comments -___-

Hope more people actually write in so that they really know our power. We do not support Johnny's just because they have the looks but also the fact that they HAVE talents.
choco banana: ohnosleep[info]am_hungry on July 23rd, 2008 11:59 am (UTC)
I'm sorry, I had to laugh when I read what the writer wrote about Maou.

Not that it's true. I laughed because it totally reflect how close-minded and shallow her/his comment was. In addition, -I'm a Malay so I don't read U-weekly- I feel that the writer might be a huge fan of those love stories? And not something like in Maou genre? O_o

I'm disappointed though with her/his comments. Sure, Maou being compared to the korean version is inevitable, but her/his review have to be concrite one way or another.

And tell me. Which writer will actually review a drama with this sentence below:

As for the female actress, "kobayashi ryoko", other than her figure which is slimmer than the korean actress , her charisma isn't as good as the korean one

Note the underlined sentence. I had to laugh though, is the writer *GASP* SHALLOW? -_-" SLIMMER? WAS THAT ALL SHE NOTICED??

Seriously though, it's a miracle that the editor actually allowed such review to be posted.

What I really 100x wanna know is, did this writer EVEN watch the drama? And please, don't even give a crap about not understanding a single word they're saying.

Acting is more than just words.

Which the writer clearly didn't know. Sigh. How marvellous.
museze[info]museze on July 23rd, 2008 01:58 pm (UTC)
well said! i had the same sentiments myself.

and another point to make, like Anonymous had mentioned above, the writer indicated this as 'Toma's Drama', while in the next paragraph, he contradicted himself by saying "The Japanese version of "Maou" focuses on 2 male lead actors namely Ohno Satoshi and Ikuta Toma who have great popularity."

in addition, i'm truly wondering how the writer came by the next line too.. "However in local japanese fans opinions, Ohno's looks and popularity couldn't be compared to Toma's". did he made a poll previously? or was there a je popularity contest that we don't know about? and why is it that only local japanese opinions matters??

i used to be an editor for my school publications and personally, that is one article that i would sent back for editing before i would publish it. it's too biased and it's not even a proper review of what the drama's really about.

So vague. The writer doesn't even have a clue to what she's in for, when she published this. Haha REVENGEEE.
What I'm most scared of is that..
If Oh-chan finds out, I'm scared he'll not act in dramas anymore. I mean.. it IS his first drama afterall.. And I don't think he wants to get.. (you know what I mean.)

The writer's just merely degrading herself but insulting others.
Lets gather up and....

REPORT TO STOMP!!

XDDDDDDDDD
Because from there STOMP will contact the people and you'll see the public reply~!
(But its a stupid idea so lets put it aside. Btw if you don't know.. STOMP is the Straits Times online website, where people can complain about things.. I think. Thats what I usually see.. >:P)

Anyway..

I LOVE MAOU~! Weeee.

hmm if i'm not wrong, reviews, especially of japanese dramas, are usually done not on what the reviewers (on u-weekly) watch, but rather the reviews they can readily get from other sources (aka taiwan magazines/entertainment newspapers).

but yeah man go guys in spamming their emails! :D Then they'll realize there ARE people who seriously watch the dramas they "review" and hopefully this would knock some sense into them to do reviews properly and never go against the je fandom

try to sound professional and polite though, so they won't take you people lightly :)

it sounds like they don't like it because it's a korean remake. you can kind of tell the tone right from the start.
